What a tremendous game.
That's a game where, a few years back, we fold when they came back and went ahead on us. Instead, 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. I like this team a lot.
It's also a game where, in years past, USC's big-time athletes overpower us. But this time, with Fuller and Prosise and KVR, we've got just as many big play athletes as they do, and we're tougher on the lines.
I do think I finally lost it with Schmidt and Farley tonight though. They're just not good enough against the best teams, and when we've got Morgan and Redfield, why have lesser athletes on the field so much.
And Kizer showed his limits. As cool as he's been, USC dropping eight clearly got to him. Got to learn to throw it away when nothing's there. At least he took the sacks instead of forcing a pick. But he looked more uncomfortable out there tonight than he has all season.
Still, though, my word what a game.

I panicked. I am ashamed at my panic.

Please, tackle.

Winning never gets old.

Goodnight.

Can we talk about the kick off guy? That ball needs to be put in the endzone. There has to be someone on campus who can hit the endzone and eliminate returns.

Did you see the one where we kicked it nine yards deep in the end zone and he ran it out past the 20 anyway?
But I thought our efforts to avoid giving the ball to Jackson got a little out of hand at times. I'll take my chances on a return over giving them the ball at the 45 or risking a blocked punt with all that shifting stuff.

No way, their win vs USC just lost more cache and their loss to Northwestern is now even more embarrassing.

Unfortunately, the pollsters are often the "what have you done for me lately" type. And lately Stanford demolished UCLA. Will be interesting to see how the chips fall with all of the shuffling today.

1. DeShone Kizer was a mixed bag, as usual. Great poise, made some really nice plays with his legs, and those two deep completions to Fuller were gorgeous. On the other hand, he took several bad sacks (that last one to knock us out of FG range at the end was horrible) and is still missing reads. Still a RS frosh and will improve.

2. CJ Prosise? Is the man.

3. Josh Adams had a super impressive run in the first half. Hoping for a couple blowouts down the stretch so Prosise can rest and Adams can get some more reps.

4. Will Fuller? Is the man.

5. Feel good for Corey Robinson. Huge catch. Hopefully he can build on that and finish the season strong.

6. Offensive line played a good game. They were absolutely dominating in the first half.

7. Tackling was absolute dogshit tonight. At times we looked like a Weis defense.

8. Sheldon Day and Isaac Rochell were very active.

9. We can't defend a trick play for shit.

10. Huge pick for Russell. Confidence booster, although it's not like KVR lacks for confidence.

11. Max Redfield finally makes some plays. Hopefully he can build on this.

12. CJ Sanders needs the damn ball. Give him some screens and jet sweeps. The kid is so damn electric.

13. Apparently Mandarin Chinese is an easier study than BVG's defense. Yeesh.

14. Justin Yoon nailed every kick tonight. He's been pretty damn good lately.

15. Props to ESB on the blocked punt.

Not to be "that guy", but did anyone else cringe every time Kizer took off running? 14 carries is too many when our only backup is a true freshman. I shook my fist at Kelly on about 12 of his carries, even if they were effective.

That was being done purposely, dude.

We beat USC. This pleases me.
He was purposely kicking away from Jackson. I think you can count on 1 hand how many kickoffs he has put into the endzone. Put it out of the back or at least deep enough to make them think about it

The guys a good returner but the farther you kick it into the endzone the more it takes.

I cringed everytime zaire ran. Im not a fan of designed qb runs. When Kizer got flipped instead of sliding really made me freak out.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like ND beating southern cal returns the universe to a sense of cosmic order.

We can beat anyone in the country not in the SEC. Wouldn't it be incredible if we played Michigan State in the playoffs? Holy geez.

Not really. It was USC and we needed a victory. You do what you have to. Glad he stayed healthy.

College football has changed. There are very few teams out there that DON'T need some running yardage from their QB....

Jekyll and Hyde performance. Thoroughly frustrating from the moment of Hunter's bad fumble until the end of the third quarter. Rotten defense, questionable play calling, putrid tackling, poor passing, butt-kicked in the trenches.

Then the turn....and the fourth quarter was simply brilliant: great receptions by multiple receivers, even great patterns by Fuller when he didn't catch the ball (drawing consecutive interefence calls), a gorgeous interception by Russell, great heads up by Redfield, control seized by both O and D lines, great passes short and, mostly, long, good special teams, including the great downed punt. It truly was as though they were different guys in the same uniforms. That was as good a quarter of football, in terms of being stuffed with absolutely excellent plays, against a quality team, that I can recall seeing in a Notre Dame game, even going back as far as Holtz.

I think people are unfair to call anyone nuts for being frustrated, but you're crazy if that fourth quarter doesn't make you proud of that team, and full of hope for the future -- which is what potential really is.

Glad they, yet again, showed the kind of mental toughness to keep playing. Would prefer the kind of mental toughness that delivers execution when they have a team down.

Defense
...Takling...smh
Gonna see the b.s. trick plays the rest of the way now...
Somehow everyone forgets that there is a freshman under center...he is going to make mistakes...they were not very big tonight...which is lucky. Not sure how the D is gonna keep a freshman qb from feeling the pressure to carry the team...giving up 600 yards is probably not a good idea. Good news is usc' s D isn't very good...won't always be the case.

Offense
pretty solid except for a couple trips to the redzone in the first half.

I can't express my emotions right now, so here's a gif of David Byrne running forever. I think this sums things up quite well.

I love this teams fight. They never stop. I am very concerned about Joe's tackling ability. Maybe that broken thumb is just too much to overcome for him.

In recruiting we just need to focus on DB's and DE's. Just my opinion.

Fuller is absolutely one of the 2 best WR's in all of football. Corey Coleman from Baylor is right there with him. But, we are lucky Will is here for sure. He is one special WR. Kind of like Golden, we all just expect him to make plays.

Great win, anytime we beat USC is a good thing. But, we have a lot of improvements we need to beat Stanford.

Go Irish!! What a great feeling to end the weekend!
