That was the first somewhat enjoyable game to watch this season, even though I figured we would probably lose. Positives....OL is seeming to gel somewhat. Tyree is a weapon, Estime is the Bus 2.0. Diggs wasn't as great as those 2 running the ball, but had a nice catch and run early, and all 3 were over 100 yards running or receptions. We are still not using the WRs a ton, but Styles looks decent. The elephant in the room for me is Pyne. I was NOT on board the Pyne train previously. But he can be a good game manager, ala Ian Book. He won't sling it downfield and destroy anyone, but he seems to be learning, and I was impressed today (and last week vs Cal) at his lack of turnovers. Maybe the NC D is actually that bad, but it was refreshing to see the OL have some push, and it made all the difference. It should have been a 50+ game scoring, the Estime goal line fumble was unfortunate, but forgivable considering his outstanding game otherwise. Mayer is Mayer, best TE in college, and probably a 1st round draft pick. The D was ok, it would have looked better without the long TDs given up. The targeting call in on Bertrand was garbage, it was just a solid hit. After Marshall, I halfway expected this team to fold, it has been nice to see them developing.

Foskey and Mills were NFL’ers today. We needed that earlier but gladly take it now. This is what we thought we had to start the season. It feels like the 2019 DL. You didn’t know where it was coming from but you knew it was coming.

OL much improved but I think the RB’s are helping. Tyree and Estime are running behind their pads and downhill. They have been fire.

Hats off to Freeman and Rees. While the team was very unprepared against Marshall and to start Cal. This is 5-6 quarters of good football.

UNC’s defense is terrible but it’s still a good showing for the offense. Another one for Rees. Stay here. Stay in this creative space. Make them defend the entire field.

I said before Cal that I felt Pyne has it in him to run an efficient version of this offense though he’s never consistently done it. His arm strength is limited deep, but some of the short and intermediate stuff was terrific. Like, Book doesn’t make some of those throws over the middle. He likely wins a different way but those were big time darts from Pyne.

Defense played too good of a football game to fall apart late. High scoring game with a big lead, they lost a little focus. Not going to lose sleep over it but good teaching moments are always better after a W.
This team reminds me quite a bit of 2019 overall. Offense can be one dimensional at times (though it’s flipped in terms of running/passing), a talented defense that struggles with consistency, a few studs elevate the offense (Claypool+Kmet-> Mayer+Tyree), and the Offensive line is a year away from being truly dominant (which may change).

Plus the trajectory of Top 5 road loss and a disappointing letdown game against a small potatoes team that starts with an M.

It would be great if that is legitimately our Oline level of play from now on rather than mainly a bad D. We'd probably be looking at 11-2. Hopeful.

Credit where it's due, especially since I've been hard on him - Rees called a great game.

UNC's defense is undisciplined and soft, so I am still trying to moderate my optimism until I see this against a better team.

However, there's at least a discernable path to 8 or 9 wins and that wasn't looking likely two weeks ago.

Shout out to Harry H for how much the O-line has improved.

Offense becomes a lot easier and more fun when you can run the ball at will.

Pyne played error free football.

Defense overall played well but still gives up too many dumb plays.

Let me know if you find a recording. Missed everything but the 1st quarter because of kids' PeeWee games. Of course they light things up once I left  This is why I'm not allowed to watch my teams.
You can watch recordings on the ESPN+ app.

Yesterday's game as described through a football porn vignette.

Rees struggles to undo NC's bra strap.

Postgame Thoughts (I didn't actually watch, just based off reading plays from ESPN):
1) Drew appeared to be a real Pyne in the side of UNC's defense, I was pleased how he spread the ball out (that's for you ulukinatme)
2) Estime looked like the bus 2.0
3) Tyree is becoming more and more versatile
4) Based off the RB's stats on page 2 our o-line showed improvement?? In HH I trust.
5) Mayer being Mayer and becoming the best TE in the country; he got me some points for me in my fantasy league.
6) Did Merriweather or Colzie play?
7) I thought UNC's QB was kept in check for most of the game, I thought he would go pass happy on our defense and it would be a shoot out of game. He will be good for UNC.
8) Bertrand's call-- fair or foul?
9) Will we be seeing more of Kollie?
10) Happy with the win, build off this, and recruit your tails off this bye week.

Go Irish!

For whatever reason Jack was pretty solid in MF’s scheme, but just doesn’t seem to be a great fit with what Golden is asking of him.

on the UNC TD where they ran a pick, Kiser saw what happened and tried to give chase to the wide open WR but was too late. So he definitely sees the field well outside of his role, but I agree; there’s something missing. UNC targeted him a lot yesterday.

Satisfying win. NC's defense was worse than advertised. Nice to see play calling was not too cute. We found a running play that worked and ran it over and over again. This game should end the excuse that we lack personnel.

May be time to move on from both Lewis and Hart. Mickey and Morrrison both look like they belong.
Cam blown coverage on that last TD was pretty egregious. Has any explanation been offered?

He was trying to cheat the 10 yard pass in the flat. That’s what it looked like to me.

Moving on from him would be foolish. I trust him more than any other CB right now.

Hart’s seat is far from hot. Making too much of a garbage time TD.

Hart - Morrison with Mickey at Nickel in 2023 is looking likely since Hart has been while not close to benchworthy, not leave for the NFL good. Rushing to bench someone the second we have depth.

Anyone know who got the game ball? There used to be post game videos of it in the BK era. Maybe I'm missing them--apologies if so.
