A LOT of the "clean Wehrmacht" myths are little more than surviving Germans conveniently finding a suitable home for their BS within Cold War propaganda. The Allies needed Germany to bounce back quickly and it was convenient for Allied PR to build up German generals as super human figures because the Allies won. Not a whole lot different than hoping the team you beat in September finishes 11-1...it just makes you look all that better. Plus the former Nazis were now our friends and it was reallllly the Communists and Socialists who are the baddies!!

Also not a whole lot different than when the earliest Christians needed to convert Romans and couldn't pin the Roman Empire with killing Jesus, so they conveniently ignore hoe Pontius Pilate was a brutal governor who showed up to Jerusalem annually on the Passover (read: Jewish 4th of July) and cruxified anyone who didn't bend to Rome's authority....and conveniently put in the Bible that Pilate washed his hands and it was really the Jews who killed Jesus lol History is fun like that I guess...

Anyway Rommel is an enormous POS whose own vanity and self-interests made him worship Hitler's charisma/persona. Given that Hitler is himself among the biggest pieces of shit in human history, Rommel deserves no mercy. I mean people don't even really get just how bad Hitler was. Forget the Jews for a moment, Hitler and the Nazis wanted to kill every man, woman and child in ALL OF EASTERN EUROPE. They hadn't even really got started. The Final Solution was a last ditch effort to exterminate the Jews while they could--but they were going to exterminate everyone from the Black Sea to Leningrad. And they wrote it down in their fucking book and Nazis were somewhat aware....

In short, fuck Rommel and all of the Nazi leadership.

George Washington owned slaves that he could not legally free, big big difference. Washington was not a fan of slavery and thought it was expensive and inefficient. It's the big reason he never had liquidity to live as the rich guy that he was on paper.

His wife owned a minority share of her slaves since they were of her family's estate. His slaves had intermarried with hers. He didn't see freeing them while their spouses were still enslaved as a viable solution. So he spent more time in his will than any other topic discussing their future, instructing how the slaves were to be emancipated when Martha died, how they were to be funded and taught how to read, write, and learn a trade, etc.

Martha didn't share those views and the slaves she did own outright she gave to her grandson.

If you're going to pin a founding father with slavery, use Jefferson. Much easier target.

You missed 99% of the post.

The crux of it is Lee gets held to a standard few others are held to.

I dont know how "clean" the Wehrmacht was... or wasn't. I know for a fact, because it's literally documented, that millions of krauts weren't Nazis. It then stands to reason that a large number of the young men who served were also not Nazis.

Literally could not care less about 99% of a good general's personal views because I wasn't there at that time. I dont have the slightest clue what I would do.

North Dakota could declare itself a free country tomorrow and whether or not I agreed politically we should be free, I'd be in the first wave storming the AFB's we have here.

Love you trying to whitewash Washington. Its cute. Making excuses for him lol. You can avoid all the cringeworthy nonsense and just say "they didn't have the same values we do today."

Its literally that simple. Look how you twist shit to protect a Founding Father, it's borderline embarrassing. If Robert E. Lee is bad, so is every founding father who was tolerant of slavery. This shit is easy.

I personally don't think less of any of them. It was a barbaric practice, genuinely awful, but rhats how the world sold at the time.

People love taking a high horse when they have the benefit or foresight. In all likelihood, you and the VAST majority of this board would have been signing up to fight for your state if you were alive and in the South in the 1860's...or for Germany in the 1930's/40's.

You are a joke. You seem insecure at the idea that you would have defended a bad opinion or advanced a objectively bad worldview lol. Everyone wants to think of themselves as the guy who would've done the "right thing".....yet when these situations manifest themselves......well...lol you generally will be one of those guys believing in the "final victory"for Germany or freedom for the Confederate states.

Candy ass and arrogant way of viewing the world that came before you. Really... it must be great to believe your shit doesn't stink and you have no views that future generations won't frown upon. I'd be jealous but...I prefer taking a realistic view of the world

Erwin Rommel wasn't just a average joe taking marching orders. He latched onto Hitler in the early 1930s and rode his coattails because it benefited his ambitions.

It's literally the boilerplate historic take on George Washington's relationship with slavery. I didn't stretch a damn thing to paint him in a light he doesn't deserve. Try reading a single book on the guy, or pick a slave owner who was actually racist POS, like Jefferson.

If Robert E. Lee is bad, so is every founding father who was tolerant of slavery. This shit is easy.

That's a pretty awful historic take because the slave owners of the 1770s-1800 thought slavery was fizzling out---because it was, whereas by Robert E Lee's time the US was among the last slavery-tolerating countries on earth and he was fighting to found a nation for the explicit purpose of perpetuating America's chattel slavery. It's 10x more fucked up than the position Washington, or even Jefferson, took.

The big difference is when Washington thought he saw economic/political forces that meant slavery was at its end, he thought it would be a good thing. When Robert E Lee and the Confederates saw the same thing, they started the deadliest war in American history in an attempt to perpetuate it. That shit is easy to differentiate.

I personally don't think less of any of them. It was a barbaric practice, genuinely awful, but rhats how the world sold at the time.

I literally posted a YouTube video backing up your position by showing Dwight Friggin' Eisenhower name Robert E Lee as one of his top four Americans ever, I guess you missed 99% of that huh?

But you are 100% on the money that people should be graded on a curve because social/cultural norms were just different. If I was a rich Virginian in 1790, I'd probably have slaves and thing its just peachy. No doubt about it.

But it's also okay to recognize when someone is behind the curve and when someone is ahead of that curve. The Nazis could have done the same thing in previous centuries and gotten away with it. Caesar did a number on Gaul, for example. The Nazis modeled their lebensraum on the American conquest of the West, another example.

Robert E Lee and Erwin Rommel are two guys who were behind the curve. Washington, objectively, was ahead of the curve.

I assume anyone with "Deus Vult" is behind the curve too.

Too long. Didn't read. Assuming your post made excuses for Washington and hated on...let's be real...people who you view as bad.

Going by your view, any man who served in the Confederate army or the German army was some sort of monster. This borders on retardation. You likely would have been one of those animals spitting on our vets coming back from Vietnam by that logic. Some shit went on over there as well.

Lol the funny part of it is, I dont have a problem with any of these guys. I have no idea what your "deus vult" nonsense means.

Did IE run a goofy Christmas special or what's with the weird guys posting nonsense lol

You read it, stop acting.

I think my view is pretty clearly laid out that people in position of leadership who are "behind the curve" when measured against the progress of civilization are ripe for criticism.

Most soldiers for the Confederacy didn't fight to preserve slavery, and most Union soldiers were racist. History is complicated like that. Just makes the leadership positions even more important.

No, my father did two tours in Vietnam as a forward observer and died of agent orange complications when I was 10. I consider the war a gross national tragedy allowed to happened due to four US Presidents not having the courage to agree with their advisors that the war was futile, pointless, and unwinnable.

See the importance of leadership yet?

Lol the funny part of it is, I dont have a problem with any of these guys.

That's sorta the problem here isn't it? Whats so bad about "having a problem" with a general helping the Nazis conquer Europe and subsequently kill millions?

I have no idea what your "deus vult" nonsense means.

Yes you do.

This is a political thread, so lots of leeway ... but the comment personalized crap is pretty out of line. Mods? Hammertime? At least a warning?

Yes, I could stop visiting this cesspool, but sometimes someone does post something of current or historical value.

Enjoy your posts, whether I agree or disagree with them, but your odd crusade against me can stop anytime lol.

I'm fairly certain I've been called a Nazi (or something along those lines) in this thread on more than one occasion and you've not called for any "punishment" on any of those, but the second i go after anyone, you sure have a way of showing up.

I'll leave it at that lol

Yeah I called you that because of your history of violent comments that didn't seem to be in jest.

Remember when you wanted to " Make China.Glow"?
Also called it the China Virus.
Also ripped on Canada and others.
You spew vitriol
Attack mental health.
What haven't you " dunked on"

Those comments were erased but they were said. Great knowing that people like you could actually be a lawyer one day.

You're the epitome of an internet bully. The world is a worse place with people who share your belief system.

Lol the virus comes from China. Calling it the China Virus is...well...quite harmless.

I have dunked on our Canadian friends and they are smart enough to know thats a border rivalry joke, you on the other hand....

You spew nonsense with the best of them so maybe you shouldn't throw rocks while living in a glass house.

Still waiting for you to explain how you went from being a republican to not having any sort of conservative thoughts you share

Pot, meet kettle. But I brush off your comments because you sound like a 14 year old based on how you talk about Trump and Trump supporters.

I'm relaxed.
Sorry if that struck a chord
I have no beef with you.

Didn't strike a chord, actually made me chuckle. I don't have a beef you you either. It just seems all of your posts are written in a manner that makes one think Trump personally showed up at your house, kicked you out of your home, is banging your wife, petting your dog and the kids are calling him daddy.

Where did the virus originate?

Yeah if you want to be a bigot call it that. If you want to be a decent human being, call it by it's scientific name. You Trumpers though. Bless you blue hairs.

The Spanish flu originated in the United States so shouldn’t it be called the American flu?

It will be in history *books soon enough. Half joking.

This is a call for more pro-Spanish Flu statues, that way kids will learn more about them.

That would send the wrong message. If kids saw a statue of 99 and a half healthy looking people, and then a half of a person holding a Kleenex with stink lines above his head, they might not think it was serious, which it certainly was.

If you paid much attention to this and the other political threads you would know I’ve been critical of Trump many times.

For the record, go check the Covid thread. I’m pretty sure that’s the term I’ve been using. However, If you honestly think calling it the China flu makes me a bigot, I’m not sure what to say. It originated in that country. I didn’t say a thing about the Chinese people themselves. We have become far too sensitive. For the record, I have 10 people that work for me. Three are ladies, one being black. I also have two Hispanics and someone that is Ukrainian. They call us the United Nations at work. Is that what a bigot looks like to you?

You may be a nice fellow. I've enjoyed some of your non-political posts by the way. Hell, we might even have a pleasant time crushing cold ones or a bourbon ot cigar.

How is it bigoted? Walk us through that. Do you call Ebola by its regular name or by some goofy science name to avoid potentially hurting the feelings of those living near the Ebola River? How about the Marburg Virus? How about MERS?

It is what it is.
