Tribune article about cheering

All this talk about having to win more for the cheers to ring out is pretty crappy and selfish. Cheering the team on, standing up, and getting loud is what can really help players get a little extra boost in their tanks to get the job done.

no fan should need "encouragement" to cheer or stand up by stadium officials or ushers...not even sure what that would look like u want some 65 yr old usher holding up a 12th man sign for you instrcuting when to clap or stand?....my point is that cheeering needs to be "organic" and natural to the fan....i saw an LSU game late 90's at night, the first 10 min was a band box until the went down 21-0 int he 1q and you could hear a pin drop in the place...what you and jack are wanting/asking for is an unnatural thing...its like in the new yankee stadium they have so much fabricated, fake noise making PA systems and neon signs (that say "make some noise" etc youve all seen these) makes me nausous...the events on the field should dictate the reactions in the stands, and you are asking for it ot be the other way around...i hear what you and lots of fans are saying on this issue but him, you me cant simply blame the "old geezers" for lack of a home field advantage at ND Stadium...blame the team for not giving us much to cheer about.
Exactly. I have supported ND with many thousands od dollars since 1954, and as a senior alumni, father and father-in-law of ND graduates I resent the suggestion that I not go to the games and instead watch Yale bowling. I have a damaged knee and an arthritic hip and have trouble standing for protracted times. I am not interested in having some drunk slob yelling obscenities at another fine team's efforts. Suggesting we emulate those foreign soccer fans is insane.
Give me a good team and I will get excited, stand and cheer when appropriate.
I would like opposing teams to fear ND stadium because they know they will get hammered by our team, not because the fans are hammered.

You don't have to be hammered to be loud.

Others shouldn't have to sit down because of your problems. That sounds harsh and I don't mean it to be, but it is the truth.

You don't have to be hammered to be loud.

And you don't have to be standing to be loud.

I don't recall standing and screaming full time when I was in the student section when attending ND. Reminiscent of a cheer from my high school days: "Stand Up! Sit Down! Fight! Fight! Fight!"

Without alumni and others with season tickets ND could not claim the string of sold out games they do. Hell, add student tickets to that. I went to the ND – Miami game my junior year ('72) and there were a sh¡t-load of empty seats. Enough bare concrete to help "ring out the echoes."

Two years ago I went to the BYU game. At 58 I made a lot of noise, some of it while seated, some of it while standing. A gaggle of the youngsters you find desirable in front of me stood much of the time while quietly texting friends and chatting with each other. Very little cheering. I spent parts of the game leaning left or right to peer between them but never asked them to sit. I just wish they'd been making as much noise as I did – directed toward the field and the players.

Again, if the anti-blue hair proponents can guarantee ticket sales and donations to the school to match those of alums, etc., then by all means slap an age limit on admission to games. Good luck.

I don't think anyone is saying the "blue hairs" shouldn't go and if they are saying that then they are dead wrong.

I don't think Swarbrick and Kelly had booing in mind when encouraging fans to stand up and be loud...shameful, ND is setting up to go for a game winning drive and their own fans are booing...that is a step in the wrong direction. Any season ticket holders booing...give up your tickets right now, I'll take em ;)

It pisses me off to no end that the entire stadium stands up for the halftime show but not the game. Are you ****ing kidding me. I didn't notice any real improvement, but I thought overall it was louder at times and you could see small patches of the stadium standing.

From what I could tell watching from my living room, it still seemed dead. Key third downs it was a little louder but when I can see people (older) sitting on my tv, its pathetic. Other teams aren't intimidated to play there. Its time to come off all this traditional things and make a new atmosphere at ND stadium. To be honest, its no suprise why non ND fans think were delusional. I mean I've been to a game at ball state, and that crowd was LOUUUD! When losing by 30! Time to add boxes to the stadium and put all the old rich people up there that think this is still the 50's.

Anyone watching this Mizzou/Georgia game? I want THAT...look at all that yellow, and the fans are in a frenzy, granted they are winning but it was that way even when they were losing. Someone needs to get our stadium together, enough talking about it.

Meh. Media timeouts killed any kind of flow to the game. Third quarter was brutal and fourth was worse. Around the 12 minute mark of the 4th, there were about 6 plays run and three long media timeouts. Players of both teams were lined up over the ball and just stood there for two minutes while the crowd was silent. Worst I've seen the timeouts really.

I'll also add that I wouldn't be surprised if the staND campaign is over. During the first quarter, an older woman (I'm guessing at least mid 70s, maybe older) fell in the bleachers a section over from me. She needed medical attention and was carried down from the top of the lower bowl by two EMTs. I can only imagine the outrage from the blue hairs moving forward if they are encouraged to stand.

I was in section 1 and I will say we did quite a bit of standing. There was even an usher throwing his hands up in the air encouraging us to stand. The music definitely played a huge role though as thats what got most people to get up. The thing is people are always going to be thoughtful to the people around them and most of the time won't stand up until the row ahead stands up. But the fans can't be to blame for all of it. My throat hurts and my voice is almost gone from today. But there were times when I just watched and didn't cheer. I can't yell at the top of my lungs for what seemed like 100 3rd down plays that nd couldn't stop. They have to provide something to cheer for. I did get angry with the people around me booing Reese. I was at a loss as well for why he came in but I couldn't believe and fans would make it harder for the guy trying to win them the game.
Anyway long time listener first time caller, just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents

The atmosphere was fine, about the same as usual. I do like the pump up music but when the team isn't playing great and we are going against Purdue it's not going to be wild.

I was in section 6 row 43. (loved the seats)

I had a blast in my section. I went up to the game by myself (I have a few friends at smc and nd I pre/postgamed with them).

I can personally say this was my favorite experience at an ND game. (have been to about 10 games over the past 6 years).

The ushers seemed chill, the purdue fans were legit. I even saw a 50+ year old wearing a kilt.

Maybe my section was just good, but the overall vibe seemed great!

I stood 85% of the game. We were at the very top of the bowl though (which I love, you can see the strategy most clearly). I was next to quite possible the most obnoxious Purdue fan of all-time. Just an imbecile.

Notre Dame timeout? YAHHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Purdue catch for eight yards? YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Die. Die in a fire.

Overall, I liked a lot of the music and generally thought that the mediocre game killed a lot of the excitement.

I loved the inclusion of "Here Come the Irish of Notre Dame" right before kickoff. Well done, stadium PA people.

Told to sit...for the first time.

Told to sit...for the first time.

I was sitting in section 12, about 19 rows up. I was not drunk, I was not yelling obscenities, and the only sound coming out of my mouth was loud yelling and whistling. I started hearing people yell at me to sit down and be quiet during our first defensive stand, and by the second a woman, SIX ROWS IN FRONT OF ME, decided she had heard enough, and complained to the usher. The Usher was rude, told me to stand only when appropriate, and told me not to wave the "Take a StaND" article in his face when I appropriately presented it to him.

I have never felt so ostracized by my university and intend to do everything in my power to change this culture. I do not expect everyone to be standing when we are on offense (I certainly don't unless the plays are exciting), and I certainly don't expect anyone to yell as loud as I do on every down when we are on defense, but this has to end. People, Jack wants our stadium to be the Augusta of football stadiums; however, I don't think he envisions it being as quiet either.

Did anyone else experience this Saturday?

I was up in section 130, above student section, It had the same feel as always. The lllllooooooooonnnnggggggg tv timeouts kill any momentum and emotion. I enjoy the added music, but it seemed like they were late playing it and cut it off too short. I was at the game last year when they added the music and it felt the same. I tell you what, I was at the ND vs Mich game last year. Now that was an atmosphere. The larger stadium with the sound being "trapped" and a "younger" audience, that was loud. Don't forget that most other universities have a larger student section, I believe that helps. All in all though, ND stadium is a great place to watch a game. I think it will be louder and the home field advantage will take care of itself in the future.

Was she drunk? Did she make a scene? Did ushers come over and offer her a breathalizer? Probably should have. I hate having that type of fan in the stands... The drunks bring nothing to the game. I'll bet she was making too much noise and standing the whole game which caused this unfortunate event. I hear that when you stand too long and you lock your knees out, it causes you to pass out... Damn boozers are ruining it for the rest of us and our fun.

My first game was vs. Utah in '10. Because it was a blowout, it was pretty dead.

I was there on Saturday, and it was night and day, the difference in atmosphere. It was loud on Purdue's 3rd downs, even louder on Purdue's 4th downs. Crazy when Terbush or Marve went down in the backfield, and even more crazy when the Irish put it in the endzone.

I'm from Nebraska, and have been to many Husker games, and although it wasn't close to how loud Memorial Stadium gets on Saturdays, it was a lot better than it was two years ago against the #15 team in the country.

I was in the student section, I thought we were loud but I could not tell about the rest of the stadium. The older people complaining really prevent things from getting rowdy

I disagree I was at the Utah game and that was the loudest game I've been to at Notre Dame. Maybe I was just in a loud section, but I thought the crowd was pretty loud that game. Of course it didn't hurt that the defense put together the most dominating performance I've seen from Notre Dame in the past decade.

Just be happy the old people, that are so crap-tastic about life that they can't cheer on ND or let anyone else cheer on, are closer to dying with every passing moment.

Yeah I agree. I was at the Utah game, and it was the loudest I have ever experienced. The atmosphere was just electric. I think when the team starts playing better, the crowd will be louder.
