Not counting graduate transfers so that takes Brent, Holmes and the two linemen off the board...

I think the biggest problem from the transfers will be o-line depth in the future. Doesn't that leave ND with just 3 o-linemen from a 2 year period (2015 and 2016)? If so that could become a big issue in the future especially as only two of them are highly recruited. It very well could force players in the future to play before they are ready and force some people to not "redshirt".

This. It takes an exceptionally talented and physically gifted lineman to make the transition from high school to college starter as a freshman. It takes a year or two at least for most guys to get to where they need to be. Not good for depth at all.

NCAA considering tinkering with transfer rules - FootballScoop

The NCAA is considering tinkering with its current Division I transfer rules, according to a release from the NCAA on Wednesday.

The Division I Council Transfer Working Group met in Indianapolis Sunday and Monday and came away seeking input from the rest of Division I membership on recommendations that could significantly revamp the transfer process.

Headlining the list of suggestions would be to no longer require athletes to seek permission from their current schools to contact with prospective new schools in order to keep their scholarships intact. Presently, schools can prevent transferring players from receiving financial aid at new destinations if the school does not approve of that new destination. From the release:

Group members believe financial aid should not be tied to whether a school grants permission to contact. They want to know if others in the membership feel the same way. The group also agreed that enhancements should be made to the formal process students use to notify a school of their desire to transfer.

This would be a change that coaches should support. In the day and age of rapidly rising television contracts, the NCAA’s argument that athletes — and primarily football and men’s basketball players — are students first and not employees receives a harsh rebuke from the public when stories inevitably come out of student-athletes limited on schools to which their coaches will let them transfer — all while multimillionaire coaches are free to break their contracts and work for a new employer immediately without seeking permission from their current school.

To keep kids at their current schools and prevent tampering, the Transfer Working Group suggested increasing education on transfer rules and requirements for all athletes before they arrive in school, and increasing penalties for coaches who recruit players on scholarship at other institutions.

The group expressed interest in increasing the consequences for coaches who break recruiting rules to seek out undergraduate and potential graduate students. The working group will ask the Committee on Infractions and enforcement staff to review the concept and provide feedback.

To curb the free agency-level culture of graduate transfers, the Working Group also suggested counting graduate transfers toward the 85-man limit for two years instead of one, and/or tinkering with the APR formula to incentivize graduate transfers to make progress toward an actual graduate degree while on scholarship at their new school.

Finally, the Working Group considered establishing Division I-wide rules for all transfers, abolishing an environment where Conference A has to abide by rules that Conference B doesn’t. The group also considered forwarding the idea of making transfers immediately eligible provided they meet academic benchmarks.

Establishing uniform transfer rules — which would require everyone to follow the same rules regardless of the sport they play — was a topic that the group agrees will likely take longer to resolve. While most members agreed the concept of uniformity would be positive, what the specific rules would be is less clear.

Members discussed two models: One model would require every transfer student to sit out a year to acclimate to a new school; the other would allow all transfers to play immediately provided they present academic credentials that predict graduation at the new institution.

The suggestions will now be forwarded to the entire Division I membership with the possibility of putting a package to a vote in April of next year.

LSU Offensive Line

LSU Offensive Line

The LSU offensive line took another hit when starting ROG, Maea Teuhema, who was suspended indefinitely for academics, announced his transfer, 8/3/17. LSU has recruited twenty high school OL in the past five classes. The Tigers now have eleven scholarship players for their OL. Outside of their five starters only one other player has game experience and he played in three games last year.

Teuhema would have been a three year starter at ROG and expected to be a leader on the OL.

The nine other transfers this offseason include:
Seth Stewart, OL, left team, 7/30/17
Isaiah Washington, OLB, transfer, (acad ineligible for spring) 7/20/17
Willie Allen, OL, transferred, 6/4/17
Saivion Smith, CB, transferred 5/30/17
Andy Dodd, OL, who would have been an OL starter, was a graduate transfer, 2/22/17
Brandon Harris, QB, was a graduate transfer, 2/13/17
Travonte Valentine, DT, kicked off team (for second time), 1/19/17
Jazz Ferguson, WR, transferred, 12/15/16
Chidi Valentine-Okeke, OL, transferred, 12/13/16

QB Lindsey Scott Announces Transfer: Former Mr Louisiana looking for playing time.

From 2005-16, LSU has signed 18 QB recruits, three completed their career there. Dismissed, transferred or switched positions - 13. Of those, eight like Scott never played a down.

Scott becomes the eleventh player to leave LSU since the end of the regular season. Four more players entered the NFL draft early. LSU accepted three players transferring into the program and recently announced an additional player to the Class of '17. (Four other players left LSU last August.)

Yeah... the rich get richer it would appear. But I just don't like the sense of free agency in CFB. That's what this would amount to IMO.

Yep, I agree with it in theory. But, this will be a dramatic shift and will cause free agency.

There has to be some kind of counter balance here, because the rule is way to unbalanced the way it is. I like the idea of giving the school the player is transferring from to block immediate eligibility for a given number of schools. For example, if a kid from, say, Southern California gets home sick and wants to transfer to back home, then ND should be allowed to "block" him from transferring to USC or UCLA without having to sit out a year.

The kids should be able to transfer to any school they'd like to go. Screw these coaches blocking them from going to 41 different schools of the coach's choosing, particularly some of these b-ball coaches (even in regards to graduate transfers). But there needs to be something in place in order to stop like 50% of the players (especially in basketball) being mercenaries each and every year.

If this passes, I can already see calipari getting 12 person classes, erry year in order to get his annual dream team. The kentuckification of college basketball is already hurting the sport (attendance has been down and ratings have been down), legalized hired guns will ruin it.

It will be difficult to manage with the scholarship limits, but it will probably help the G-5 more than the P-5.

How many kids get stuck behind starters that want playing time.

Yes there will be the odd stud at a G-5 school who will come in and start at a top P-5 school, but I generally see it as one way traffic, heading downward for playing time.

Would be very stupid. Smaller schools turn into high schools. Kids will literally go to school to NOT "play school". Give the kids something to work at if they want to transfer. I degree in hand and you can go where ever you'd like w/o penalty.
