Anybody else imagined the scene from "Remember The Titans" when they go to camp? It's where they built their trust for one another.

Also, this is where LNIII will be outed for his leopard-spotted underwear. Bikini style.

The end of that video says a full camp preview interview with BK will be Aug. 30. Did they mean July?

Mike Frank on ISD just posted that he heard BK's presser will be next Friday, and some players will be available to the media Sunday. Then Camp at Shiloh till Thursday.

The media should have steady camp coverage after that.

I would assume so. They say Tuesday, August 30, but August 30 is a Friday and July 30 is a Tuesday. Plus a camp preview doesn't make a lot of sense the week of the Temple game.

Irish are not expected to don full pads until they return to campus on Friday, Aug. 9 when they practice inside the LaBar Practice Fields

OK, that was what I was thinking too but didn't want to assume.

I grew up about 10 miles from Shiloh Park and know next to nothing about it except that I will be going to watch practice with my Dad if it's open to the public.

I'm so happy for Dan Heincker to get this opportunity for Shiloh Park. He's my college roommate's dad and I worked there for Dan a few summers in undergrad. He is truly a man of God and one heck of a hard worker. He, along with his three sons, build two homes, sold them and now working in a third outside of Marion. He was a former Paster at the Swayzee Church of the Naz for about 4 years and then moved up to a Nazarene Regional Pastor position. Essentially helping struggling churches in the North East Indiana area. He did that for about a year or so and then decided to take over Shiloh Park, which was in really bad shape. He has completely transformed Shiloh Park into a top notch retreat. Tore down old buildings, build new dorms, put in a swimming pool, remodeled the chapel and dinning hall, a crap ton of work. The football team will have a great time there and are in great hands.
Congrats Dan, you earned it!

You having me over for dinner afterwards?

Now that we have the nuts and bolts of it, dates pinned down, background on the facility, and the people, why?

Isn't it interesting that this is coming to fruition this year? My hypothesis is nothing with Kelly happens by accident. If that is true, what does this mean? Kelly in the short interview mentioned team building. Last year it was four captains. Last year he had a way of developing the team, based upon the character he saw in it. Most would have to say he embarked on a pretty successful endeavor.

What does this sojourn mean?

For example does it mean he thinks he has so many players deep that he wants to institute a "super" rotation, keeping fresh legs in at all times?

Or is it merely an attempt to build new leadership in areas to take over for last year?

Let me preface this by saying that I feel like I am often relating things back to his days at UC, but I'm a local guy and UC has always been my no.2 team so it's what I know...

I think the answer to your question is both. It's obvious that some leadership needs to step forward... you know what you're getting from veterans like Zack Martin, TJ Jones, LNIII, Dan Fox, Bennett Jackson, or even Ice Cold Tommy Rees. Those guys will be leaders. But all of these guys will be gone after this season, so I believe BK is pushing for plenty of "younger" guys to step up and be prepared to answer the call when the time comes.

Where my knowledge of his time at UC comes into play is the fact that he was constantly rotating fresh legs in everywhere, with the exception of QB and OL. He didn't have the OL depth to do so, but he had no problem playing "less-talented" WR, DEs, DTs, LBs, or DBs as long as they were fresh. You can see it with his use of the running backs; even if he has a "work horse" on hand, the ratio of carries between running backs will almost never show a "work horse" because of how much he values fresh legs to go along with his "big chunk" mindset. A guy may be a work horse, but fresh legs are more important when you are trying to produce chunk yardage. A work horse may get five yards every play like clockwork based on talent, but a less-talented player might produce carries of 10+ simply for being fresh. That's what BK wants.

He platooned his WR's for the most part when it came to involving guys behind the top two, something we haven't seen much of at ND (unless I'm missing examples) due to a change in offensive philosophy (less 4 WR sets, more TE on the line). At UC he had guys like Dominick Goodman, Mardy Gilyard and Armon Binns at the top (which I would say is the counterpart of Floyd, Eifert and Jones), but 4 WR sets were used often enough that 4-5 guys would all share the 3rd/4th spots in the rotation. Certain WRs need to be weapons on every play, but the other spots have a premium on fresh legs because they aren't being covered by the oposition's lockdown defenders anyway. It seems like common sense to me, but you often see coaches get locked in to a mindset of "this is the depth chart, this is set and the way it will be unless someone is hurt." BK isn't like that, so I believe he really is banking on being able to put almost anyone on the field at any time in an effort to outwork the opponent, especially if we are going to see an offensive "grind it out" style of play.

as far as the wide receivers we certainly don't put as many on the field at a time nor run the pace of offense he ran at UC which is why you don't see as many getting rotated in and out.

We may see more rotations coming in this year and next as few are complete wr's other than TJ. Smith for blocking, Robinson in redzone, cj/amir/others based on game plan and field position.

Based on his video it sounds almost like they have been working on this since he has been hired, or at least soon after.

Get the kids away from outside distractions for a week, let them develop the right mindset for the season then introduce them back into their environment. It also allows for much more time in film and team building.

I am sure every football team/coach does something similar but we were the only kids on campus when camp started outside of volleyball and "townies". We literally spent every hour of the day with the team or position group. We had movie nights, skit night (was always fun, only time of year you can let the coaches have it), watched old nfl highlight films, had whacky competitions.

You would be amazed by how much it builds that family mentality that when it comes to a game you can look the other guy in the eye and know he has your back.
