I had lived in Auburn during the time of the poisening, and so yes, the poison is the culprit here. The University is known for it's excellent agricultural program, so they were doing everything they could to try and save it since the situation, based on the article they weren't able to keep them alive. It's pretty sad, I'm all Irish, but the Auburn fans down there made this a tradition after every home win. I'm not trying to compare it to ND's end of the game ritual, singing with the student section, but this was a big deal in Auburn and it's too bad some Bama fan went to these measures.

The school has not set a specific date to take down the poisoned oaks. (As opposed to poision oak, the vine.)

That's really sad. Updyke is a grade A douche.

I thought so too at first and that he was just an over-zealous fan who'd done an incredibly stupid thing, but the more I've seen from him over the past two years, the more I'm convinced the cheese has slid completely off his cracker. The guy's not all here anymore. He has some serious mental issues and isn't close to being in touch with reality.

Famed Toomer's Corner Oaks at Auburn coming down after final roll - ESPN

Here's my question: The article never really says why they are coming down. Was the poison enough to kill them and they are taking them down because of that?

Yes, afraid so. They dug up most of the soil around the trees and replaced it, and did everything they could to dilute the poison and treat the trees, but the damage was already done. They hung on for two years, but it looks like they're beyond any realistic hope of saving. I'd like to see AU transplant two new younger trees, but I don't think they've decided yet. I think they're probably just going to have an open, landscaped area and a monument or plaque.

That is sad...Updyke destroyed private property...but what of the theft of the experience he took from future kids.

Not to sound like a whacked fan, but its those traditions that string the past with the future...its one of the mysteries that define, and bind programs and fan bases.

I'm just sad for Auburn.

Just replant-get alabama to pay the bill to replant. They can pay it out of the slush funds they get kids to go to alabama with. No big deal/no harm/they are just trees. 'War Trees'.

Auburn is going to build some sort of structure in place of the trees. If Auburn was awesome, they would build bronze statues of Auburn football players tackling an Alabama player with the face of the bama player having the likeness of Updyke.

To make matters more complicated, the remains of the trees will be auctioned off, and an Auburn fan vows to buy a piece, grind it into sawdust, and sprinkle it all over Bear's grave. I'm sure that will go over well.

I would say replant them, but if they put a plaque/statue they have a better chance of them lasting through any Alabama defacing. If they replant the trees they would probably need constant surveillance to prevent another poisoning.
