I don't think that's really fair. Ohio State is not Miami or Florida State. I mean, Craig Krenzel is probably one of the smartest guys on the planet. I know that ND has a long history of having really smart football players, but that doesn't mean that no one else has ever had any.

Myron Rolle played for Florida State and became a Rhodes scholar. He and Krenzel are the exceptions that prove the rule. Ohio State caters to players looking for a "football first" college experience---plain and simple. If my son or daughter considered turning down a free ride to ND (or Stanford) to go to a school like Ohio State, I'd take them to have their head examined.

Pat Fitzgerald was a "hire from within" promotion. He was a LBs coach and a recruiting coordinator there, so they already had a pretty good idea of both his coaching skills, and his administrative skills. In addition, he was promoted after the death of Randy Walker, and was probably given the job more to steady the players who had to be shaken than to be the long term solution. He then made the most of the opportunity.

After reading through most of the thread here and giving it some time to think about, I believe that Alford reached his potential here at ND. He wanted to better himself and wanted more of an opportunity for himself, and OSU gave him that opportunity.

Instead of being pissed like I was last night, I like all of us should, I appreciate what he has done for the University of Notre Dame's football program.

I will miss his recruiting the most and how he connected with the kids. Over the time he was here did we have an All-American, Heisman watch running back here? No.

It's time to move on and believe that there is someone better out there. Remember there is never an off season with Notre Dame Football.

Ohio State had 6 NFF Scholar-Athlete Award winners in the 90s alone. I'm not trying to say that Ohio State is some kind of bastion of academic excellence and integrity, but they aren't in the worst group of offenders either, in my mind.

Fair enough. But I do remember that when I was in grad school, many players were majoring in Leisure Studies and Kinesiology. In fact, I recall looking at the schedule of classes and seeing that a few classes offered in kinesiology (e.g. "Football Coaching") were being taught by John Cooper. What a joke.

OSU players barely have to go to class. I'm friends with the intern that has a group project with one of the TEs and they started a few weeks ago and he's been in class like twice. Also, Braxton Miller drives a 300K vehicle and essentially does not go to school.

I think Alford will flourish in this role though. He can help get in more players that never had a chance at college and I think he'll feel good about that.

While i never say "never" on Urban; I do disagree w/ your last statement. This has been a misconception since it was leaked that he had a clause in his contract regading the ND & tOSU gigs. I believe tOSU is his "dream job" while ND may have been his "dream school" as a student-athlete who happens to be named after a Pope. If ND was his "dream job", why did he turn down his "dream job" in 2004?

That being said, now that he's won three NCs including one at his dream job, taking ND to the promised land would be his last collegiate challenge IMO. The only thing more challenging would be the NFL.

All these factories like tOSU, FSU, Bama, LSU, Auburn, etc offer great educations for those that want them...but they're there to win football games first. Remember Robert Smith? He was pre-med at tOSU and was discouraged to take easier classes by John Cooper so he quit the team for one year & ran track. THey relented so he came back the next year before graduating early.

Any football program who is serious about winning a championship looks for a football first player. Get with the times.

Good luck to Alford. Seemed like he was loyal, and professional. I thought he did a fine job with backs, and a A+ job with recruiting. CSU will be sorry they didn't grab him.

As for ND...well, HCs benefit from fresh heads in the room, so to speak. Kelly will find a good coach...the trick is, can he recruit the South East?

My biggest concern is getting someone in quickly so momentum with 2016 RBs can be maintained, especially Washington, Adams, Rasul, and McCall. My favorite candidate to that end is Autry Denson.

Any football program who is serious about winning a championship looks for a football first player. Get with the times.

A "football first" college experience is one where players major in what amounts to Underwater Fire Prevention, don't have to go to class, have zero academic responsibilities, and basically focus all of their efforts on football. You may find winning in such a way a path ND should emulate, but as an alum I don't.
