Bolstering your case, it was Swarbrick who opened up the checkbook to hire Freeman as DC. Prior to that we were not paying top-of-the-market salaries to coordinators. (which worked OK when they were BK's buddies or internal promotions like Rees and Lea, but is also why we lost Elko).

Anyway we all know the real most important hire was Mickens. Without his good buddy on staff here maybe Freeman doesn't come.
It’s funny how many take any of BK’s successes and attribute them to anyone else possible other than BK. Scorned lover syndrome I suppose.

It's scottie booker and it's not even close.
I remember when he was the guy who got blamed for everything.

He's coaching safeties for the Tennessee Titans now, far away from NIL and transfer portals. Couldn't be happier for the guy.

It’s hard to really know how much is the coach’s fault. I do know the TE production got worse every year when Booker was here and his STs were not very good. Much of that might have been out of his control but the results were pretty bad. Glad he’s doing well. On a side note, the MIL of the Titan’s DC works with my wife. He’s been good since taking over.

I recall Brian Kelly at one point saying they coached special teams as a staff, but Booker's title made him the target.

Be that as it may have been; Eifert, Koyack and Niklas all got drafted. Brindza made a lot of field goals. I think in 2015 ST scored four TDS and one year they led the nation in blocked kicks.

He's coaching in the NFL, so if he's not laughing last, I'll have the laugh for him.

ST aside, TE play dwindled under Booker and he had plenty of talent to work with. He was damn near the Del Alexander of the TE position, but more talent. Koyack, Niklas, Smythe, Mack, and one year with Eifert (Which I don't attribute to Booker). All decent talents or better that either didn't really reach potential or fell short of expectations, aside from Eifert of course. Smythe doubled his production the year after Booker left while Long was pulling double duty with TE and OC, then Kmet came in and got 500+ yards and production just continued to get better once Mayer came in after. In 5 years the best Booker coached TE was a 300 yard year by Mack, definitely felt short of his potential.

I'm not going to relitigate Scott Booker 7 years later, but this comment doesn't get you past concussion protocol.

He recruited Mack, Wright and Kmet. Del Alexander could have picked through their garbage cans and still come up with nothing. Massively low blow on your part.

He had Eifert for two years.

Fake news. Booker wasn’t even a coach at ND for a year before Kmet got to campus. His specials units were pretty rough.

I’m dubious. He obviously didn’t go to ND to be coached by Booker.
I don’t disagree. The position coach isn’t always the determining factor in a kids decision, but I would like to think he didn’t commit to ND because he is had insider knowledge of Booker moving on after the season…

He had Eifert for 2012 only, which was the first season he was TE coach. Before that he was an intern. He was clearly riding Bernie Parmalee and Denbrock's coattails when it came to Eifert anyway. In fact, Eifert's numbers dropped in that last year with Booker despite the team being arguably better offensively.

If Booker was good at his job in his time at ND he would have been retained. He wasn't, which tells you all you need to know. Maybe TE just wasn't his position, seems like he does fine with Safeties at the NFL level which is the position he played in college.

You're correct. I got crossed up that Eifert was drafted in 2013, not on the team.

LOL. He lasted five seasons at ND. That's solid retention. Whatever. This has been fun recollecting yet another coach who took more shit than he deserved, appropriately in the Tommy Rees thread. Cheers.

Serious question. We know Saban interviewed or at least spoke to some others before hiring TR. So we know for certain he actually offered any of them a job and got turned down?

Only one I know for sure is Grubb.

Even Grubb we don’t know for sure do we. I believe there have been countless coaches that have announced they’ve decided to return to XYZ school. Those types of announcements imply that they turned down the offer or they withdrew their name. But I’m sure there have been plenty of people who never got an offer and the announcement was simply a PR move.

One of the reasons I asked is that I read that Grubb's views on the rushing game didn't mesh with Saban's and they didn't reach an agreement on how Grubb would run the offense, so Saban never actually offered him the job. No idea if he did or didn't, or if Tommy was the first person he offered it to or the 5th. Doesn't really matter in the end. He's who got the job and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good hire for Saban and Rees.

Regarding Grubb, there are reports that he would not commit to RTDB as much as Saban wants, or at least not to modify his run philosophy as much as Saban wants, and therefore was never actually offered the job as OC.

Now that we know Tommy was Loy's main source. What's the funniest shit Loy has ever thrown out there?

Was Loy the one who f*cked up our chances with Monroe Freeling? IIRC, some people said he wrote an article which was inaccurate. Apparently he said that the staff didn’t like him as much as some of the other Lineman who were committed, and that Freeling read it and thought the staff was lying to him and dropped us after that.

I think I remember reading that was Prister, but I'm not certain.

I think throwing Chip Long’s name out there randomly in this OC search has to be top 3. That’s the ultimate “I’ve got no fucking clue, let me generate some clicks before I go to my OrangeTheory workout” move by Tommy Loy.

Alabama has now hired three of Rees’ old co workers.

McNulty, Whisenhunt and John Aylward

Sure seems Saban possesses ample respect for Rees, as he’s allowed him to surround himself with his guys.
