It’s strange the amount of judgement that the south has for Catholicism. I bet most don’t know Saban is Catholic, well, maybe they do. Religion is a requirement around here. But as long as he’s a winner they’ll turn a blind eye.
Some of the ideas and stereotypes you guys have about The South are "interesting" to say the least. I grew up in small town Alabama during the '60s & '70s. There were no "Colored Only" or "Whites Only" signs and no store or business in my town was closed to Blacks. There was no conflict. We all just got along pretty well. Never saw a Klansman in my life. We had several Catholic and Jewish kids in my school. I don't recall anyone ever mentioning it as an issue in any way or thinking of it as anything other than just another fact such as what street they lived on or where their dad worked. Heck, we elected a Jewish girl in my class as homecoming queen. A lot of the bigotry and such some assume was more the exception than the norm, and more likely to be found on TV than actual day-to-day life.

I moved to SE Tennessee from Florida in '98 and do have to say it was a little bit of a culture shock. I grew up Catholic (kids are raised Lutheran, like my wife) and have to say there hasn't been any sort of bigotry towards Catholicism that I've seen. The truth is the religious fighting here is amongst themselves (mega Baptist church vs mega Baptist church) or between different Evangelical denominations. They don't really concern themselves with lost souls like Catholics.

BTW, this is a great place to live and raise a family. Except for the SEC stuff.

I , a white person in Alabama in the 60s and 70s, never saw much racism at all! We even had Jews at my school!

The "Whites Only" signs had been gone for 5s of years when I was born!

I live not too far from Cullman Alabama, and have experienced first hand things you mention (this was the 90’s) including the once or twice yearly clansman protests at the local court house.

As far as religion I am catholic, and I get the you’re catholic? (Like I told them I was an atheist, or a pedophile) from time to time. I think that’s where other stereotypes exist.

I used to go to a barber shop in Tuscumbia Al as a teenager that would turn blacks away upon entry, there was no sign but he’d refuse. Only saw it once but it was normal for him according to my friends.

So it did and still does exist.

I don't doubt your experience at all. It varies a lot from one town or county to another. Cullman's long had a bad rep in that department, though things have certainly gotten much better even there. There are still pockets where it's 1950, but you can find such places in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio too. I realize my hometown was probably better than most. One of my best friends is an 81-year-old black guy from my hometown, and both he and my mom (same age) say they don't remember ever seeing much overt racism and Whites Only or No Colored People signs or anything like that even when they were kids in the '40s.

I've told the story before, but when the school systems were integrated in '68, there were protests and fights and police in the schools 15 miles away, while in my hometown it was a complete nothingburger. It really can vary a lot from one town or county to another.

Serious question: what makes someone like you want to twist and spin something in the most inaccurate and hateful way? Are you insecure, or just a bitter asshole, or got a small penis or a cheating wife or what? I've just never understood the mentality to try and make an ugly, hateful comment when it isn't necessary. If you've got a problem with me, then man up and address it directly. If you're just a bitter little shit, then get over it. That being said, have a nice day and I genuinely hope you rid yourself of whatever burr is under your saddle.

Good album. Grandsons name is Corgan.
Siamese Dream is a great album, but Melon Collie & the Infinite Sadness is my favorite album. I also enjoy Adore. 3 great albums in a row by SP.

Great name for your Grandson, Corgan is a great musician.

The south is so terrible and racist that all of the black players can't wait to leave and go to the schools up north.

One of two things are gonna happen for Tommy at Alabama:

1. He evolves his game and outperforms his resume at Notre Dame.

2. He puts up the same numbers he did at Notre Dame and gets stuffed in a locker by Alabama fans to a degree that makes ND fans who didn’t think he was the guy look like saints.

If #2 happens, I literally can’t wait to watch Golic Jr. get into fights on Twitter with Finebaum listening Roll Tide fans with avatars of them wearing Oakleys in their pickup truck who just aren’t evolved enough to grasp the raw genius of his best friend on Twitter

This guy would fit right in with half the board.

Whatever. His basic beef is that Rees called an offense to fit his players - who are generally far less skilled for downfield passing than Alabama has become in recent years - and to complement a defense that has been the strength of our team for Rees’ entire tenure.

It would have been pretty interesting to see what Rees would have done at ND this year with a strong-armed quarterback and a fleet of WRs who can actually get open. I guess we’ll have to see that at Bama instead.

He’ll obviously put up big numbers at Bama. College football is all about getting the elite talent and Bama has it in spades. He’ll get judged on the couple of games a year that they play other teams with close to equal talent. I’m sure there will be weekly updates on it next season and all the same people will be arguing all the same points.

Exactly and since ND now has a young, black HC the Irish are guaranteed top 5 recruiting classes for as long as he’s here.

Seriously, I used to wonder why black HC or HC from schools from the north or west coast didn’t use the racist history of SEC schools to negatively recruit. Then I was reminded that most HC end up needing another job or wanting a better job and it could end up in the SEC.

Also, today, when these recruits are attending college, schools like Alabama and LSU have 2x as many Black students per capita as Ohio State or Michigan (let alone Notre Dame).

So you’re saying they’ve moved on from the segregated past and are taking advantage of a great college experience & degree in their own backyard?!

Bear Bryant desegregated the Alabama football program in 1971. It only happened after USC, full of minority athletes from Los Angeles, Beat the crap out of the Tide. Bryant knew the only way to keep up on the field was to change their approach to the makeup of their roster.

Alabama didnt desegregate out of ethics or morals. They did it because they didn’t want to lose.

So......the norm. Thanks appreciate it.

Hey you are a big Mayonnaise guy? Have you heard Smashing Pumpkins song 'Mayonnaise?' Damn good song off Siamese Dream.
I do love some mayonnaise and also am a fan of that song.

You the man, Iris.
