Shoulda had 52 today if Estime doesn't lose the ball at the goal line. Just glad they showed up and the boys continued to build on what they had last week.

I thought he called a quality game last week and a really solid game today. It by no means changes my position on moving on from him in the offseason, but I've got to give credit where credit is due.

Miami in their loss benched Tyler Van Dyke today. Would be a REAL shame if Gattis/Cristobal drove this dude to the portal.

Might not be currently giving enough credence to UNC giving up 235 rushing yards to Georgia Southern last week.
Georgia State ran for 200 against South Carolina and averages just under 200 rushing yards per game. I’m not saying UNC is a good rush defense but their numbers coming into the ND game weren’t bad.

DJ Uiagalelei might also be in the portal after the year.

I'm talking more in the aspect of the entire offense/play calling being limited. Not just the explosion of a run game.

I do agree this feels a little similar to last year's stretch vs bad Defenses.

Great game plan and execution all around today. While it was a terrible UNC defense, I think we finally saw the ability Tommy brings to the table when the oline is getting a push and our receivers can get separation.

Now the push/separation won’t be this exaggerated against competent defenses moving forward, but we are moving in the right direction offensively. We are finally leaning into heavy play action passing that everyone has been Pyning for.

Not complaining, exactly, because that was a good showing by our overall offense and - I agree - a very well-designed game plan by Rees. But Pyne completed 24 passes, only five were to WRs not named Styles, who (as Orlovsky pointed out) they were inexplicably giving like a 12 yard cushion. Separation and downfield passing remain something we need to work on.

Also did Merriweather or Colzie play? Don't recall seeing either of them. At some point we need those guys to overtake Lenzy and Thomas (and certainly Salerno).

What I liked about the offense was it looked like the type of offensive identity we need to be. Not just this year but as a program. Power run game that relies on the OL. Heavy use of our TEs in the passing games and using play action in the pass game for big plays (think we were like 7/8 with 3 TD passes off play action).

OL and TE recruiting shouldn't be a problem for us. I'd like to see us continue to get physical RBs like Estime. Just need to upgrade the QB and WR positions and we have a blueprint for a consistent offensive identity that this program needs.

I think Tommy did a good game. Props. It will be interesting to see how BYU game goes. Wished he was good with play calling against Marshall. He definitely contributed to that awful loss.

This does beg the question of why they started Buchner if it is in fact accurate that Tommy is better at calling plays for and working with QB's who are more pocket passers than dual threats.

Their numbers were not good, by any measure. They gave up six yards a carry to App State and four yards a carry to Georgia Southern. The other game was against the 67th ranked offense...in the FCS.

Couple things:

Pyne's not really operating as a "pocket passer" in the traditional sense. They have him running a lot of play-action, rollouts, screens and passes to RBs in the flat. If they had run that stuff with Buchner I think he would've been a lot more successful than he was chucking it downfield to our mediocre WRs.

The "pocket" was nonexistent against Ohio State, nor could we effectively run to set up play action. Marshall game we couldn't run much either. Pyne is benefiting from vastly better OL play than we saw the first two weeks.

No knock on Pyne, who is doing a good job running the offense Rees is designing for him. But I still think the ceiling is far higher with Buchner. That said, if Pyne leads us to, say, 9-3, which suddenly feels like a real possibility, the QB situation going into next year could be very interesting.

Yes, you are spot on. I should have clarified because most of the “separation” today was just given to us. Now if we can create that separation (not incredibly hopeful) then we might have something to work with.

Orlovsky was also great in the game. A ton of insight.

You either need an elite QB to elevate the level of play around him. Elite playmakers who make an average quarterback a game manager. Or both. We have none of the above right now. And TR hasn’t been able to adapt to this. We have very good players and Mayer. There is no need for our offense to be so pedestrian.

Why don't we just run the power spread?

McVay’s man crush on Rees really is something. Skowronek is the dudes favorite player. Using him at WR, TE and legit I-formation FB. That coupled with there was weird buzz week 1 that Kyren had a real role in store before he got hurt.

Glad he finally called a good entire game, but my beef with him is more the borderline negligent QB/WR mismanagement. That doesn’t go away after one week against one of the worst defenses in CFB.

Some good points. It's really hard to make a fair assessment of Buchner or Pyne prior to the OL getting their shit together in the 2nd half of that Cal game. No OC is going to be running an efficient offense when your OL can't get a yard against Marshall and they're giving up pressure in the middle of the OL. I hope Harry has turned things around and we just continue to build, the season could be salvaged if that's the case. I'm not expecting to run the table the rest of the way, but even 9-3 or 8-4 would look a lot better than 6-6 or 5-7 like some were thinking two weeks ago.

We're going to continue to be limited by WR play for this year, that's just the truth of it. It's pretty much just Styles out there until either Colzie gets healthy and/or Merriweather gets up to speed. Hopefully the BYE will help both those cases. I like that we're getting the RBs involved in the pass game instead. We're seeing Tyree, Diggs, and even Estime getting some big receptions the last two weeks.
