The poaching part is not what’s surprising, it’s that it’s Tyler Van Dyke being poached.
Fish where the fish are. If he's who available and what they want, you almost have to give Saban the benefit of the doubt. There are a lot of variables now as Bama has had a lot of change in their program too, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

If they don't think Milroe and Simpson can cut the mustard, they're going for Van Dyke and he's probably an upgrade over those guys.

So Alabama's current QBs must not be very good.
Ty Simpson is likely their quarterback. Milroe is incapable of completing a forward pass. He would be been unbelievable in a Houston Nutt or Gus Malzahn offense though. That said, I believe Alabama's got three 5* quarterbacks on their roster. That's on them to figure it out/evaluate talent.

Milroe’s a really impressive athlete, but *buddy* did he not show he could even do the basics at QB last season.

Becoming apparent that Tommy took a pay increase to work with inferior talent
“But recruiting inferior talent at QB is supposed to be my job!”

It'd be cool to see Saban screwed by a last minute coaching poach. I also do not think Rees is ready for a major HC gig (a classic case of promoting past his abilities).

Northwestern is an awful Job and he'll get a better one sitting under Saban's desk for 3 years.

He needs to keep up his current persona as a heel and take like the Ole Miss or Auburn jobs when they come up. NW needs a Mother Theresa type and he ain’t it

Just gonna sit back and smile at the mention of Notre Dame as an "academics-focused institution" in the post from the blog about SEC football.

(As for Rees, if he wants to be a college head coach and Northwestern comes calling after this season, he ought to at least think about it. But it seems unlikely for both parties.

It's certainly not a great job, and I agree with your sentiment. And adding to your point, I think Rees would be the absolute wrong fit for that program right now.

It needs a steady hand. They're coming off 3-9 and 1-11 seasons. They get this hire wrong and they're look at 10+ years before they're competitive again.

It's a Power 2 job. Big 10 TV contract money will get them a sitting P5 HC IMO.
According to this, anyway, Fitz was making $6.5M. 20th best paid nationally and fifth in the Big Ten.

That’s pretty good. And if they’re willing to pay that much to someone who’s not Fitz, then yeah maybe they can pull someone making $3 to $5M from an ACC or Big 12 school. But I think that “if” is an open question right now. And even if they are, why would some comer in the ACC (Elko, for instance) take such an inherently difficult job when they could go someplace with better odds of winning?

He's smart, he's not taking the NW job. He didn't go to Bama to improve his coaching prospects just to take a HC job at a mediocre to bad B1G team. The big problem is the B1G is going to a division-less model soon. This will make things even more difficult for NW as they'll be moving out of a weak B1G West and have to face OSU, Michigan, and Penn State more often...not to mention USC now. The scandal will make it more difficult to recruit at NW too, they're already losing recruits as it is. Of course anyone who steps into that job will get a long leash given circumstances, but going 6-6 or worse isn't going to open up a lot of better job offers. This job will attract squeaky clean coaches that are down on their luck, or a desperate G5 coach that's looking for more money. I just can't see a hot up and coming coach taking a chance at hurting their career at NW.

It makes no sense for him to take the NU job, whether now or in five months from now. If he flops at Bama, nobody is going to want him. If Bama does well, he's going to have better opportunities in both college and the NFL. I think Tommy is probably leaning toward NFL OC being his next step. Maybe he'd want the job and maybe he would not, but my guess is he takes a pass if it comes to that because he'll have other options. He's from Lake Forest, he was a GA there, they have high academic standards and ND has high academic standards. These are the easy and obvious dots to connect. Does it usually work out that way?

As for Northwestern, consider what kind of hires they have made in their program:

Gary Barnett, Colorado assistant, first time HC
Randy Walker, Miami OH HC (and former Northwestern RB coach)
Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern LB Coach/Northwestern alum, first time HC

There is really no way to know what kind of job this is and could be. They've had three HC in the last 30 years. It's the Big Ten, the money is good, there isn't a lot of pressure and the Chicago market is more pro sports than college. There are pros and cons to it but it presently leans more toward a Randy Walker type of hire in my opinion. A MAC/Midwest guy who has HC experience.

5 mil a year and get to a bowl game every now and again and everyone’s happy. Add in a beautiful new practice facility and incoming stadium plus that TV cash. Tommy would at least have to take a look I would think.

Northwestern was already the bottom of the weak B1G West last year. I don't see that getting any better after they've already started losing recruits and then having a 1st time HC coming in like Tommy. NW will routinely get crushed by the bigger brothers and USC in the coming years. It's going to be really, really hard to succeed there for the foreseeable future, if not perpetually given academic requirements and the conference changes. A new practice facility isn't going to fix anything, and it sounds like boosters are wanting to hold off on the stadium after the recent news. Only a fool or a desperate man considers that job. There will be better jobs available after Alabama.

theres literally only two conferences left in D1 college football that matter and the NW is in 1 of them. Its totally an attractive job.
