Beyond their theoretical similarities, both Capitalism and Marxism do not differ from each other in their sociological content. The fact that there are two theories for the birth of Capitalism is of minor importance. Ya mean the whole Chinese gov selecting Bishops with the Pope given veto power? ,,, and the whole State run Catholic org vs the underground Catholic org loyal to the Vatican... If so, yep, saw a Reuters article. Also saw something on the Atlantic on the same topic, but mixed in the race for souls (Catholics vs Protestant) in China.

I don't know a lot about the current situation, just picked up bits and pieces over time. I can't believe though the Vatican asked two of it's Bishops to step down and be replaced by CCP selected Bishops (one of whom was excommunicated). Sounds a little crazy.

Jay Dyer's writings and videos introduced me to Orthodoxy. I used to think of Orthodoxy as Catholicism without the pope, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Western Christianity is so different from Eastern Christianity they almost feel like different religions. I would go so far as to posit that the chasm between Catholicism's and say...Baptist's core theological outlooks is smaller than between Catholicism and Orthodoxy.

The "essence vs energy" distinction is probably the key difference and at first may seem esoteric, arcane, or overly academic but is the gateway to vastly different conceptions of the nature of God. The West tends towards created grace and absolute Divine Simplicity via Thomism. The East tends towards a more mystical view of God denies created grace. The St. Gregory Palamas vs. Barlaam dialogues are a good resource.

Upon deeper reflection and the realization the Eastern Fathers all teach a distinction between essence and energy in God, in our watered-down ecumenical morass, it has become an exercise in seeing if oil and water can be mixed.

Formally, the only thing that separates the Eastern Orthodox from Rome is their rejection of the Petrine primacy. Which makes them schismatics, but not heretics. Their churches exhibit 3 of the 4 marks (holy, catholic and apostolic, but not "one"), and they're as close as one can get to the true faith without being in communion with Rome.

That said, it is difficult to avoid heresy while remaining in schism. Other areas of concern:

• Greek and Russian bishops are consistently subject to secular rulers (if the details of the alleged concordat with China make you nervous, look out);
• Neo-Palamism is an intellectual disaster; and
• Their identity is so tied-up in being anti-Roman that they've ended up tossing a lot of the Desert Father's teachings that correspond with the Catholic position.

I'd recommend The Eastern Orthodox Church by Adrian Fortescue for further reading if you find yourself drawn this way.

If the Roman Church is truly out of the question, then by all means, at least join a sect that in which you can avail yourself of the sacraments. But if you think things are rocky inside the Barque of Peter, things are much less stable outside of it.

Post-schism I do not think the Catholic Church has faced anything remotely close to what the Eastern Church faced during Soviet communism (except perhaps China). The situation in Greece and Cyprus over the years has not been ideal either. I don't think persecution or being subject to secular rulers is a knock against the Church though. I hardly think Christ came to set up an imperial papacy. "Render unto Caesar" fits in pretty nicely with the Orthodox idea of Symphonia, but that is the ideal. The real world doesn't always play out that way.

Well historically the West devastated during the Fourth Crusade. Western Crusaders raped nuns, killed priests, pillaged Christian territory, overthrew Orthodox bishops, and installed Roman puppets. There was also that time in 1453 when Rome sat on her hands and whistled Dixie while Constantinople fell to the Turks. Also, Roman Catholicism is the largest and most powerful religious institution in the world and is responsible for numerous theological and philosophical errors that plague modern Christianity. Plus, Rome makes no secret about their ambitions in the east. A stated goal of the Fatima cultists (of which I was one not so long ago) is the consecration of Russia to the "Immaculate Heart" of Mary and the submission of Moscow (thought by many Orthodox to be the "3rd Rome") to the papacy.

If the Roman Church is truly out of the question, then by all means, at least join a sect that in which you can avail yourself of the sacraments. But if you think things are rocky inside the Barque of Peter, things are much less stable outside of it.

I'll agree that the worlds of nihilism and Protestantism are rocky roads indeed. With that said Rome is in chaos and the last 3-4 popes have teetered between instability and outright heresy. JPII prayed with Muslims and Jews and partook in pagan Hindu rituals. Benedict prayed with Muslims and Jews. And Francis...well...enough said.
