It's fine to discuss what we, as fans, want or don't want. But the problem is real: The committee puts a lot of weighting on conference champions (and that 13th game) and other coaches are voicing their opinions about ND not doing either.
Look, I'm with everyone else in that I'd prefer ND maintain their independent scheduling ways. None of these coaches are backing up their statements with actual facts against ND's scheduling. It's been quite comical, actually. But the perception is bigger than the reality here. I hope ND can stay their course, but the first time a ND team who is a legit contender gets left out of the playoffs (ala TCU/Baylor), shit is going to hit the fan and the committee will just look at us and say, "we warned you."
Note: I get that the vast majority of people (including myself) feel that a 12-0 ND team will never be left out of the playoffs. But there is a real threat that any 12-1 Conference Champion team takes a spot over a 12-0 non-conference champion ND team. I've pointed this out along with numerous others that a clear way to fix this is to have an 8-team playoff. IF that happens, I think ND's independent status goes unaffected. But if it doesn't (or at least until it does), ND will have to continue scheduling very difficult schedules (and go undefeated) to "make up" for the fact that they don't play a conference championship (or 13th game). I seriously think the committee spoke loud and clear last season.
