Figured ND has enough prospects in the Finals this year that it deserves a thread. It starts today (June 28-July 3). A bunch of the ND reporters will be there.

Players of ND interest: Jayson Ademilola (ND Verbal), Derrik Allen (ND Verbal), Kevin Austin, Tommy Bush, William Craig, Ja'mion Franklin (ND Verbal), Houston Griffith, Jack Lamb, Cameron McGrone, P.J. Mustipher, Ovie Oghoufo (ND Verbal), Azeez Ojulari, Jeremy Ruckert, Jamaree Salyer, Shayne Simon, Tyreke Smith, Amon-Ra St. Brown, George Takacs (ND Verbal), Sam Taimani

There are other players with "interest", I tried to get the most interested.

any chance some of the target recruits announce at the opening?

Any chance for a ND commitment? Pretty comical if we get through Irish Invasion and the Opening without at least 1 commitment.

Actually, it's already comical that they didn't get a verbal at II. That would never happen at UM or OSU.

I guess Takas counts, but he was already on board.

Hoping Lamb, Kevin Austin, Mcgrone, or Shayne Simons make a surprise commitment.

koon back off the ledge a bit homie....actually i prefer them not to commit at things like irish invasion, bbq, fnl etc....typically kids that commit at these events end up doing so because they get caught up in the hype of the moment---these ones typically decommit or are lower ranked guys that get an offer and commit only to be processed out later(NOT saying that about ND but at the other programs...

it's possible Austin does(ND lean) & Simon(ND lean)--could pop at the opening

also doesn't sound like mcgrone is ending anytime soon...could be he was a less sought after prospect due to getting injured and now is enjoying the flury of attention/offers

lamb also doesn't seem to be in a rush but we did a great shot there and pretty much everything possible

Dude give me a break. Don't hyjack a thoughtful thread with this. What's comical is that you put abritrary days on when we should get commitments. Simon visited UM after his ND visit, and didn't give a verbal to UM. Also, he isn't attending their BBQ, is that comical? He's a legacy to UM and isn't even attending their biggest recruiting weekend.

We have 5 players to follow this week, let's enjoy it without these pointless posts.

And as of today we are in good position, potentially lead for Austin, Simon, McGrone, and Lamb. Let's see how they do.

What I love about the Opening Finals is they put pads on the OL/DL, or at least most of them. Should be fun to watch Jayson and Ja'Mion get after it.

(Sampson) The Opening: What To Watch

The Opening remains the gold standard of recruiting showcases and this summer’s spectacular at Nike will have more of a Notre Dame feel than usual. Here’s what you need to know as the event kicks off.

Is this heaven? No, it’s Beaverton.

That’s basically the reaction for anybody headed to The Opening Finals for the first time, which gets started in part today before blowing up Thursday to the media after a morning practice for quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends in preparation for the weekend’s 7-on-7 tournament that wraps on July 3.

Irish Illustrated is in transit to Oregon today and will be at Nike on Thursday morning for the first of seven opportunities to talk to some of Notre Dame’s elite targets and commitments as they compete against the best. We’ll blow out our coverage with Instant Analysis, the latest buzz, prospect updates and highlights of all the players you want to see.

But before getting to what we’ll be watching, here’s a list of the players headed to Nike with Notre Dame connections.
It starts with five commitments: defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola, linebacker Ovie Oghoufo, tight end George Takacs, safety Derrik Allen and defensive tackle Ja'mion Franklin.

From there, top targets include receiver Kevin Austin, offensive tackle William Craig, defensive back Houston Griffith, linebacker Jack Lamb, linebacker Cam McGrone, defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, rover Shayne Simon and lineman Sam Taimani.

Then there are the fringe targets, players the Irish may face in seasons to come. That group includes receiver Chase Cota, cornerback Kalon Gervin, offensive guard Jamaree Salyer, defensive end Tyreke Smith and offensive tackle Rasheed Walker.

That’s the who.

The what?

Here are the stories we’ll track at Nike.

Commit Watch?

Notre Dame landed Robert Hainsey during The Opening last summer and picked up Chase Claypool a year earlier. In terms of gets, those two rank among the best in their classes. If there’s a prospect to go Irish this weekend, odds are he’ll rate near the top of this haul too considering the talent headed to Beaverton.

There are two good bets to go Notre Dame’s way, although getting this weekend might be tough.

Four-star receiver Kevin Austin from Florida has Notre Dame in his final four, a manageable group with Duke, Miami and Tennessee. Clemson made a run at Scout’s No. 170 overall prospect but didn’t get traction. Notre Dame, including the current recruiting class, continues to feel Austin will go Irish in the end. Notre Dame has been on top of Austin from the start, with Autry Denson and Del Alexander doing the heavy lifting.

If ESPN had continued to broadcast The Opening as a major summer event, a live get for Notre Dame with Austin would have felt right.

Shayne Simon showed a ton at Irish Invasion, enough that watching him at The Opening probably won’t be a revelation. Simon is among the best of the best in terms of build. But The Opening should showcase his coverage ability during 7-on-7. Does he compete for 50-50 balls? Can he flip his hips in coverage when it’s not just a sterile drill?

Simon has said he doesn’t plan to commit in the near term, so don’t expect much this week. But, as long as he’s spending time with Jayson Ademilola and the rest of the Irish commits, Notre Dame doesn’t need to rush this one.

Rankings Rethink

For all the team camps and regional combines, there’s always a surprise performance at The Opening. Sometimes it’s a prospect out-performing his ranking. Sometimes it’s a prospect shrinking in the spotlight. Sometimes it’s an athlete looking like he needs a position switch.

Both Notre Dame’s defensive tackle commits will get a serious rankings look after Jayson Ademilola jumped all the way to No. 127 on Scout and No. 9 among defensive tackles this spring. He didn’t get a chance to show much at Irish Invasion, but the pads will come on this weekend, giving him a shot to back up his strong performance at other combines. Can Ademilola keep a good thing going?

On the flip side, Ja’mion Franklin earned his way to The Opening Finals, where just about everybody else is four stars and up. Can the nation’s No. 45 defensive tackle move up the board with a strong weekend? Opportunities won’t get much better than this.

Among the prospects, Sam Taimani might be the most intriguing target with an ability to play defensive tackle and offensive guard/center. The Irish need him on the offensive line more, and that’s where he’ll work at The Opening. Could he be the next mauler for Harry Hiestand?

Cross ‘Em Off

Every top prospect says he wants to take a visit to Notre Dame, he just doesn’t always know how to make a visit to Notre Dame. And that’s really the most important part of the visit, the making. Anybody can just say they want to visit.
Well, time has just about run out on prospects idly mentioning Notre Dame as a visit possibility. With the Dead Period running through July 9 and training camp three weeks later, there’s not much calendar left for those hypothetical summer visits.

That makes The Opening a chance to hold a few cleats to the fire on Notre Dame. Receivers Isaah Crocker and Anthony Schwartz have both talked about visiting the Irish but haven’t. Wide out Kamryn Babb did during spring but probably can be scratched. Are the Irish really involved for offensive lineman Rasheed Walker? Is cornerback Christian Tutt serious about looking out of state? And will defensive end Tyreke Smith finally stop mentioning Notre Dame after a series of non-visits this spring?

At this point, unless a prospect has a firm visit date set, he’s not going to visit this summer.

Bottom line, the sooner Notre Dame knows it’s out for some of these fringe prospects, the better. That way the Irish can turn more attention toward recruits who actually might come.

Mostly ND commits and targets. Had to throw in a couple from non-ND targets also that were just too impressive not to include.

Also, seems like ASB is stealing the show. Gotta get him.

Here's a freebie from Jamie at ISD. Definitely worth the read and ISD has quite a bit more for their members up on The Opening. Great coverage from them as always.

Interesting rep between Jam Frnaklin and Emil Ekiyor.

Wish HH wasn't flawless, would love to second guess him on Ekiyor.

I'm with you there. The first one I posted was of Franklin and Ekiyor also and Ja'mion walked him straight backwards. Still wish we'd offer Ekiyor tho with the attrition at the interior OL recently. Harry knows what he's looking for tho so it's hard to argue. Also seems like Michigan isn't real set on Emil either so we might be able to steal him away if we really wanted to.

Yup, my bad. Good catch. Emil looked solid then in every rep I saw.

If we go up tempo more and he has conditioning issues, which can be fixed, then I sort of get the no offer but otherwise I'm kind of confused. Harry knows better than us tho so I'll default to him.

Passed on Emil obviously because Salyer is a lock!

I am still looking for a highlight where Bookie doesn't hold, interfere or get beat.

News flash recruitniks... just because a DB does an incomplete motion, the throat slice, a back flip or jumps up in the air and touches butts with his teammates doesn't mean it was a good play.

And I love me some Bookie. Just saying.

It seems like the thing to do for DB's at these camps. Just be overly aggressive so you don't get "beat", then do some sort of showmanship afterwards, and it's all good. No flags or consequences so why not.

I also really liked the "Super Highlight" from Amon-Ra:

Run a decent route at first, fall down because you're running the route too hard, resulting in a poor cut and footing, get up and catch an underthrown ball when the DB actually had winning position if the ball was thrown on timing/cut like it would be in an actual game.

Spin the ball. Punt the ball. Do a backflip. Celebrate that underwhelming reception!

Couldnt agree with this more!!!....... And not to be a complete homer, but D Allen's one handed INT, was FAR MORE impressive to me. (Glad he didnt celebrate in such a manner though haha)

ISD has video on Twitter of Ademilola going up against Salyer. On the second rep, Ade walked Salyer straight back into the QB

Actually, he's whooping everyone's ass this weekend.
