I know I'm the one that started this thread... but I would be very happy with Tommy as the OC if he had someone who liked to recruit good QBs.

He dialed up a 60+ point game today. It was only drops and terrible throws/terrible quarterback play that kept it from happening.

Tommy as a play caller is pretty good.

Tommy as a talent getter is a fucking dumpster fire.

He is not a great play caller either.

This is basically where I’m at. In a vacuum, I like how he calls plays. I do NOT like how he manages personnel on offense. Doesn’t recruit, develop, etc. Team has no identity. They commit to running the ball without Pyne shooting them in the duck with incompletions and score two easy TDs. His failure to do that against Marshall/Stanford is why ND is 4-3 instead of 6-1, and probably trending towards 6-6 on the year.

Anyone have any realistic OC replacements? Warren Ruggiero immediately comes to mind. Phil Long getting hired and bringing Drake Maye is the biggest wet dream ever.

Brian Kelly and his quarterback Jayden Daniels just posted over 45 points on Ole Miss. At the end of the game they hugged and seem very happy.

Why can’t Tommy Rees do this?

A couple of things:

I think playing and coaching at ND is no fun at all. It's a relief just to get a win.

Brian Kellly is truly happy now that he is free from ND.

All we need is someone who doesn't shoot themselves in the duck.

There is no excuse for Notre fucking Dame to have a QB room like this and that is 100% on Rees

I don't care if he graduated from ND, Tommy boy shouldn't be allowed within 500 feet of the football facility after he gets canned in a few months.

Worst QB situation since Joe Cool's sperm was singing it into the dirt?

Honest to God, if Pyne is going to keep playing then taking Mayer off the field at times is the only way the rest of offense could theoretically improve.

Agreed. Play calling is generally not completely terrible. Too bad at this level it’s Jimmys and Joes.

Here’s a hot take.

We’d have a better record if Tommy was the head coach. Doubt he’d be better in the long run, but short term. I said what I said.

(I’m fine with the way he calls the games. Lack of development, Qb room, game plan, etc is the problem.)

I’m cool if he’s gone. I’m cool if he’s retained. I thoroughly believe, if he had a good Qb, we’d be just fine.

If Jack Coan had a 2nd year of eligibility we'd be 6-1 right now. If Buchner doesn't get hurt, we're 5-2. IMO. But that being said, it's on Rees to get that guy at QB. He hasn't. He is the sole reason why Drew Pyne is the only viable option in the QB room right now.

He recruited every single QB on this team. Everyone. And he can’t develop the QB’s he recruited. That’s 100% on him. No one else. The QB room is in him and Kelly for not recruiting better.

Jack did. Fickell would have this program humming.

Tommy would not be here and Freeman would be where he belongs, coaching the defense. Also, he would’ve taken one look at our shit quarterback room and brought in a transfer. Perhaps Hartline would be the offensive coordinator? I’d like our recruiting under that regime.
Freeman would be the HC at Cincy.

Is anyone else game enough to admit they don't have a clue what is a good play call or not except if it works?
I think that I see your point. That no matter what play is run, only the outcome (success or failure) matters in determining whether or not it truly was a good play call? If so, yes there is a certain logic. But on 1st and goal from the 1yd line, with the 90s Cowboys O-Line, Moose at FB, and anybody at RB, I'm calling HB dive 100% believing that it's a good play call no matter what. :)

Can’t stand this board sometime.

Tommy Rees is able to score points on UNLV and it’s like “he’s not that bad, just needs a QB”. Like it’s not his fault he doesn’t have one.

No matter how he finishes this 5 game stretch out (probably won’t be great), he still failed to average 20 points against Marshall/Stanford at home.

So while you all can have short attention spans, and live week to week whether he’s a good OC depending on the outcome of the most recent game; I will die on the hill that he’s awful for this program, his scheme isn’t a modern winning CFB offense, he didn’t deserve the job in the first place, and he needs to be axed as soon as the season ends.

Jack needs to answer for why he went to ends of the earth to keep him before he even named the next HC and allowed that person (Freeman) to hire his own OC. Media should ask him if he hired Golden and will hire all coordinators going forward.

No fucking way we lose to Marshall or Stanford with a healthy Buchner that also has the luxury of the same offensive line Pyne has had, as well as proper play calling. None.

The problem with Buchner is he hasn’t shown me that he’s capable of throwing a ball 40 yards. We actually have talented WR’s on the roster. I blame Styles dropped passes and play lately on lack of confidence in the QB. Styles, Lenzy, Thomas, Tobias are all talented and if the staff can’t find a QB to get them the ball then you’re gonna see a lot of transfers this off-season. You aren’t beating Bama running it 30-40 times a game you need a offense where you have a QB who can sling it all over the field. Lenzy has been open many times the last few weeks and Pyne can’t do squat
