The end of Net Neutrality?

If there were ever a government regulation that I liked, it would have to be Net Neutrality.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-internet-exclusive/fcc-chief-plans-to-ditch-u-s-net-neutrality-rules-idUSKBN1DL21A

Wondering what y'all think.
I do see internet access as a utility. IMO, it has become a basic necessity in many ways. While I don't like the gov telling business what to do, I do think companies like AT&T, Comcast, VZ, etc. are as much public utilities as electric, gas, phone, water,etc.. Not to level of needing to sustain basic life (water/gas/electric), but as much of a need a phone these days.

Would anyone want the gas company limiting gas flow to certain brands of water heaters or furnaces? Water companies to limit flow of water to phister brand faucets while wide open to delta? Will the carriers slow slow video streaming to entertainment that is not their own? AT&T is attempting to get heavily into content. When that happens, will they slow or limit access to Comcast's NBC/Universal shows?

I just don't like it. If you pay for a certain speed, you should get that speed regardless of where you are going.

If the carriers start prioritizing, slowing, or limiting traffic, I do think we'll see some drama in the near future.

The FCC is currently a captured agency that works on behalf of special interest groups and corporations rather that the general public which it's supposed to serve. In this case NN has bipartisan support among Americans, yet this shitty piece of legislation is being pushed through anyway. Why? Because Ajit Pai, the current head of the FCC appointed by President Trump, is a former corporate lawyer for Verizon and telecom lobbyist.

If this vote passes in December, it will give a select few companies like Verizon and Comcast the ability to lock the parts of the internet behind a paywall and sell it back to you in pieces like a cable package. It's anti consumer and anti free market. The ISPs are also working with the FCC to prevent states and towns from enacting their own Net Neutrality laws as well.

Make no mistake, this is a terrible piece of legislation that helps a handful of mega corporations at the expense of everyone else.

Unfortunately a lot of folks have no idea how it might impact their daily internet and/or entertainment activity.

If the topic gains steam in the public eye, I bet Trumpster inserts himself to reverse Pai, and try to look like he saved the day.

Trump has been pushing for this since day one.

Yes he has, and has been a proponent since 2014. If you have learned anything about Trump, you know he can/will change direction. He just wants to be loved.

This is one area that Trump and Cuban see eye-to-eye on. One of very few, I think.

Trump would rather be loved by the rich and powerful than the poors. The sooner people understand this, the better our nation will be.

Don't agree. He'd rather make money than anything else, but I do think he wants to be loved by the masses.

Have any of you seen this video before? It kind of shocked me how far behind other countries we were. If anything, maybe Net Neutrality isn't enough. Maybe we need the FCC to get rid of it and have the backlash at congress make them put it into legislation. It would be an easy win for them considering the overwhelming bipartisan support. Maybe then we could make it even more like a utility and catch up to other countries.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the poors. At all. This is Comcast and Verizon versus Facebook and Google. The poors have nothing to do with it.

None of that has anything to do with how net neutrality works. It's not about what Comcast charges Comcast customers, it's about what Comcast charges Netflix.

Yup. You're about to see many ISP's start asking money for some sort of prioritized delivery system for sites like YouTube, Hulu, or any other high bandwidth applications.

It's utter horseshit. Sites like Netflix and YouTube are already to big for ISP's to neglect, but where this will really do is stifle new opponents to these giants from entering the market. They can't fork up the extortion, err, money for the prioritized system that these large sites can.

And there won't be trickle down to the poors? This is very much about pay to play and Comcast will charge Netflix big money for their bandwidth use. Say you create a startup and want to compete in the marketplace, how the hell will you be able to pay that on top of paying for engineering/product designers/etc.

It's difficult enough, we don't need companies further burdened by exorbitant market entry fees. TBH, this is a cash grab by the biggest cashcows. If I ever wanted a monopoly to come about, it'd be google laying fiberwire over the entire US and strangling the competition. Google has been a big backer of Net Neutrality.

This is bad all the way around.

The poors are going to get dinged regardless. Either their Netflix bill goes up a few percent or their Comcast bill goes up a few percent.

All of this is 100% irrelevant by the way. In the long run, the 5G wireless network will make fiber-and-copper based ISPs obsolete.

What is going to be different about the 5G landscape that concept of treating bandwidth as a utility will be unimportant?

5G isn't going to replace 4G in the way end-users interact with an application like YouTube on their phones. Not anytime in the near future anyway.

Umm... Okay, but that comment was a general statement on Trump, not a specific point on net neutrality.

I don't think he's ever given a crap about the common man. He's never been a part of that class; it's foreign to him. I think he only views the adulation of commoners as a means to his desired end: respect from those he views as peers... something he's always fallen short of.
