Talking about defense
Tony Krausz | The Journal Gazette
Here are Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly's thoughts on some of his defensive players.

On linebacker Carlo Calabrese's development: "He's tackling well in space. He's much better in his coverage fits. That was some of our concerns. I think really he's just tackling better and he's playing more consistent on a play-to-play basis."

On the contributions of backup linebacker Prince Shembo and Steve Filer: " They're improving, they're just allowing us to move personnel in and out of the game and feel really confident that they can be productive for us. So this is truly about the development of a Steven Filer and a Prince Shembo within this defense, as well as Neal and Smith. I mean, they're developing each and every week. Brian has probably developed as much as any of our linebackers, maybe, say, Carlo Calabrese. But all these guys are developing before our eyes to the point where when they go in the game they can be productive."

On cornerback Robert Blanton's ability to tip passes: "Either that or we're doing a great job in our tip drill. I don't know who gets the credit for that. He's a guy that plays the ball well in the air. He's played very, very well for us at the cornerback position. In particular he's coming in at nickel. He's, again, a young man that is playing a lot more this year and has made the most of his opportunities."

On the play and development of nose tackle Ian Williams: "Well, two things: One was work volume, his ability to have a sustained effort, a high level, was not very good. We graded it out to be somewhere in the 30-play range last year. And then his play would taper off, physical conditioning, strength, all those things, nutrition, taking care of his body. Now he's up in that 50-play range.

"So the first thing that's obviously noticeable is his work volume. He can now compete at a high level for a longer period of time. He's always had the intuitive, kinesthetic awareness, whatever you want to call it, he can get off blocks, so he's always had that. What we've really focused on is the work volume."

This defense is not bad at all, and it is only getting better. Looking forward to next year with the additional talent we will have and the more depth at key positions.

This is the first defense in years that I have not gone ape and taught my own self new cuss words while watching the D. I love the 5-2 / 3-4 hybrid, especially when you have backers like Teo and Calabreze. They are already in my mind possibly the best LB tandem in the history of ND defense. Imagine the possibilities from here on out with the addition of Lynch and co.

Since I watch the game on TV holistically, the only defensive stat I can use is my cuss level, and I have been absolutely silent all year about adding new words or kicking puppies while watching this D. I have always given a bit more attention to the LBs, since been there, done that, and this system, the coach, and the athletes, are the CHIT. I am already hoping we don't lose our DC early. His D is potentially as good as the Barry Alvarez program.

Man I am laughing right now because I couldn't agree more with you. This is the first time in a long time that I love our defense. They keep getting better and better and I love our LBs and the effort I have seen thus far. We are really getting some good play, far from perfect, but I am also not cursing as much and I feel better about we are doing defensively this year. Next year has be very excited, because with Aaron and Stephon in the mix, it will be exciting as hell to watch.

Other than a speed concern on outside LB's and depth/maturity in our DB's, one has to be pretty confident on how they're developing into pretty good defensive team.

Was just thinking the same thing...

I don't remember a D since Alvarez was in charge where I didn't think...Oh shnit. I think back on Pete Mitchell and a gaggle of tight ends and WRs that we flat could not stop, and things progressively worsened to where I would wonder what no name player we were going to make a one week all american...in addition to not stopping the real All Americans.

Look at it this way...would a freshman QB have survived the first half w/ Alvarez at the helm? They seemed to kick our arss regularly lately.

Now we aren't to Alvarez D level of play yet, but its coming...and quickly. We give up yards, but we seem to adjust, and at least make teams make their own adjustments...and the big one...we are more disciplined, and our guys seem to hit with a ferocity I haven't seen in YEARS...

Good scheme(and equal to Alvarez)...good buy-in...SCARY middle backers...the turn around we are seeing on the D side, its pretty special.

I think these guys (coaches) are committed ...of course barring an obscene offer from a national power as a HC...then, its not like Kelly can guilt them out for chasing it...

We are a DE, OLB(x2) and Free Safety away from being a really really good D. I have been impressed with Diaco.....

Diaco is taking care of business.

He is the real deal. He is improving this team almost as much as Kelly.

The real question I wanted to know is... How much input does Charlie Molnar actually get on the offensive side of the ball?

I'm sure Molnar does a lot of the work, but it seems like he is more of Kelly's supervisor of his offense.

Either way, this coaching staff in general is A+ worthy.... The program is rising before us.

Also, a badass monster whom engulfs the tackle spot. Louis Nix. Next year, he'll be in wicked shape (aslong as he doesn't live at Burger King again this summer) and a force on our line. I am excited for him.

I believe that with even the smallest bit of luck we'll see a significant improvement in this bunch's productivity instantly. That is because Kelly came as close as you can come to saying that Prince Shembo is going to be a regular part of the "dime" package [obviously to rush the passer]. When I saw him step to the outside shoulder of the BC tackle and one-arm lever him aside on his way to his first sack, I said: "Whew! I just saw my first ND pass-rush monster in many years." Hopefully, my hopes haven't fooled my eyes.

a bunch of college players who are so slow they look like high school players, and some kids who are actually still in high school... Herbie is not impressed.

Ian Williams using his last year, what a monster! He deserves some All-American Recognition, or will by the end of the season. He is really crushing good lines. When is the last time we have had such a force inside?

Anyone else notice that on Blanton's sack off the blitz, Shembo was in there as well? He may have gotten it if Blanton didn't come in untouched and beat him to it.

Shembo had two, power and speed. What a force. Or are people just shocked that we are rushing and blitzing again?

The problem is that they aren't aren't GOOD, either. They are pretty mediocre. They are getting better, but who knows where they will peak? I have to agree that they are much better, as a unit, than last year. But they were really bad, last year.

Looking forward to improvement shown against Pitt. Almost over the fact that we are two plays from 4-1. The improvement seen on defense helps to get me past it :)

We all know that most of the defense will be back next year. It would be great to know how guys like Schwenke, Wood and Moore are progressing. What will they add to the mix next year?

NOT THAT IS A SCARY LOOKING DEFENS! I like our depth next year that is for sure. We are looking at a very good formiddable defense if all the chips fall into place.

In August, Kelly said that he liked what he saw about Schwenke, but he wasn't anywhere near the physical presence he needed to be this season [i.e. he needed a year's maturation]; so I think that Kelly likes Schwenke's tools already.

Kelly also stated in Wednesday's Post-Practice Interview that Kona Schwenke has been moved up to the varsity level.

He said that Schwenke, Dan Smith, and Christian Lombard are some freshman names that you might possibly hear more about as the season goes on.

Schwenke has a crazy amount of potential.

Last year's offense with this year's defense and we would have been in a BCS bowl.

I don't disagree with that, but we don't have last year's offense. And making comparisons like that doesn't change the fact that this year's defense is pretty mediocre. I'm not being dismissive of the gains that they have made, I'm just being realistic. Here are the numbers:

Total Defense: 89th
Scoring Defense: 70th
Passing Defense: 96th
Rushing Defense: 68th

They are in the bottom half of D-IA in almost every major defensive statistical category. They are getting better, but they still are just mediocre. I'm optimistic about the future, but they are more than one or two players away from being a very good defense.

Take into consideration our front-loaded schedule vs. everyone else's cupcake scheduling. You'll see a drastic difference after we get our Western Michigan, Tulsa, and Army games done with.
