2011 the most points they gave up were to spread teams (Oregon-27 and WVU-21).

2012 they shut down A&M pretty well holding them to 19. Lost to Clemson in bowl game.

2013 they smacked A&M holding them to 10. They did OK against Auburn holding them to 21 and winning (but this was before Auburn really got rolling). Gave up 27 to Ole Miss in a loss.

They don't play many spread team, and when they have they've had mostly mixed results. I'd be more interested to see Stanford talk about how they prep for the variety of spread offenses they see in the PAC12.

from experience your best bet is being lucky enough to match up man to man or at least have man concepts in your zone.

that allows you to commit 7 guys to the run and keep the pocket collapsed if you have an athletic QB

bottom line is in today's game you have to be able to create negative plays against these high powered offenses....that seems to be the teams that give offenses like oregon the most trouble.

They also keep calling Auburn a spread team. They're basically an option team that runs out of the shotgun.

How to stop the spread?

I'd say based on my football experiences:

1 - Tackling: You can talk Xs and Os all you want but you got to tackle and tackle in space. As some who has gone to countless coaching clinics specifically for tackling it appals how crappy many college and pro defenders tackle. The techique is crap to say the least. Teams generally beat you not on throwing and catching but running after the catch. The option and zone read plays tend to be about assigment football and if one player misses a tackle you are screwed. Essentially because you are "spread out" as a defense gang tackling and pursuit are less likely to bail out bad tackling.

2 - Dominant DL. Spread is based on math. It is all about counting guys in and out of the box and choosing the appropriate play. Having dominant DL not only pressures the QB but ruins the math for the offense. Having dominant DL that require double teams allows the defense to defend without dropping more plays down in the box.

3 - Stud DBs. No brainer but if can cover man to man you can drop more people in the box, bring more pressure, etc.

The other thing I think you will see is more versatile hybrid type players. The big SS Cam Chancellor types that are almost small athletic LBs. I think teams will run more 4-2-5 type looks going forward with one of the DBs being a hybrid type. As was in the NFL 45 percent where ran in nickel and another 10 percent in dime, so basically an extra DB was on the field over half the snaps.

Another thing about the stopping the spread is basically you really don't have a prayer in your base defense. You need sub package (Diaco stayed in base too much if you ask me) and be in some form of nickel (4-2-5) or LSU's mustang which essentially a dime package.

The thing about 3-4 teams is that the DL types for the 3-4 don't always make the best DL types for the those types of packages. Just pointless speculation on my part but my theory is that players recruited as 4-3 personnel translates better into nickel and dime packages than 3-4 personnel.

To answer the thread title...

Tackle. aka wrap up and take to the ground. Its rather simple.

I know it is so simple it gets overlooked. Teams with sound tackling fundamentals tend to stop the spread or any offense for that matter.

How to get good at tackling when live contact in practice is very limited in this day and age, is takes a bit more thought.
