Stanford is going to be ranked in the top 5. Had an excellent season, and wins the Rose Bowl.

But..... Recruiting class is ranked 92nd in nation by rivals having only 4 four star and 6 three stars.

I guess this run of greatness will be short lived.

I don't get it.

Total lack of effort?

They finished with the 6th ranked class last year... So WTF is up in 2013?

It's puzzling to me as well. Perhaps Shaw just isn't much of a recruiter.

Seriously shocked. Shaw has to step it up. He can obviously coach, but you have to have studs. 92nd.... geesh.

Stanford's o-line class was so stupid good last year that they could survive a bad recruiting year simply by running the ball through the struggles. Once they get low on depth from a bad class, they can put their punter at RB and their kicker at FB and still find success behind that line.

Noor Davis? Not sure, don't remember hearing his name during the game against ND.

I hope they shape it up. Don't get me wrong it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they drop out of the top 10 for a year or two but 92nd that is not good.

A competitive Standford in my opinion is great for Notre Dame as far as the rivalry is concerned.

D1 sports admissions is really complicated. I remember I spent two weeks at UM taking a course in business and one of my professors used to work in admissions at the school. His job was to be a liaison between admissions and the football program. He would read applications and then pass them on to the higher ups in admissions, and they would come back with a decision. He then took that decision and told the coaches who they could offer scholarships to and who would not be able to get into UM. He said he was instructed to pass anyone onto the higher ups with the NCAA minimum GPA to qualify. He said that different schools have different standards for admissions and keep their players eligible differently. I was wearing a Notre Dame shirt once and he used Notre Dame as an example when he compared different schools and "keeping players eligible." He said he had friends in admissions at Notre Dame and they would not push a player towards one major or another, and left it up to the players what they wanted to major in. At UM they believed it was in an athletes best interest to study in their highly ranked Kinesiology school. (Though pretty much any degree > a kinesiology degree). When he worked in admissions they basically took anyone with the minimum 2.5 GPA and felt they could truly say they take care of their athletes because most of them study in a highly ranked program.

Stanford it is pretty clear has strict admissions standards even for its athletes, as it has been rumored that Savaiinaea started looking around because he could not get in and also that Doug Randolph may not have made it past admissions, even despite his 3.5 GPA (according to Rivals). Or, it could just be that Shaw is not a great recruiter, or this year's kids aren't very interested in Stanford.

What I do know is this, is good for Notre Dame.

If David Shaw is going to recruit like that he should bolt for the NFL while his name is still hot.

Guys, they are up against the limit, roster-wise, and from what I've read they HAVE to have a very small class. I've heard as little as 13, but don't quote me on that.

Shaw will still do very well at Stanford...he's a really good recruiter.

Yeah I believe a Stanford guy had said on the Dan Patrick radio show that they are only losing 13-14 guys this year. They are going to be very good next year as well. It will be our toughest game IMO.

They finished in the top 5 last year I think they will be just fine. There is plenty of talent on that team.

Their class on Rivals doesn't seem so bad, they show 4 four-star guys. I know people are migrating away from Rivals, but that's still my favorite service... Behind the wonderful posters of IE, of course.

Don't lose Isaac and Doug Randolph to go along with Peter Kalaymbi sorry if that is spelled wrong but that's a hell of a line backer haul. Ryan Burns IMO is one of the more underrated prospects in the country. They have been a pain in our side last couple years good to see us not go head to head with them this year.

Agree, but the quality, or lack there of is what has me surprised. Looking at "interest", they are not even in play for any kids higher than 3*s (closing out the cycle). Considering how well they've done.... just doesn't caluculate to me.

Accidentally made a post like this in BCS thread, wanted to post it here:

Try this scenario. Louisville beats Florida. Oregon beats K-State but ugly. ND beats Alabama by at least a TD. Could it be # 2 finish for Standford in the polls? Standford would have an extra loss than Oregon but would have beat them head to head. I've already seen enough to rank them ahead of Georgia in my mind. I think they should be ahead of Oregon too because of the head to head and the fact that Oregon did nothing to challege themselves out of conference.

This is only for the coaches poll, if this happens I assume OSU is number 2 in the AP.

Was wondering this the other day, and had nowhere to post it. Do guys think Stanford would have ended the year in the top 2 and played for the championship had they beaten Notre Dame? I think they would have been #1 to end the year. Wins over ND (assuming we would then finish 11-1) and 11-1 Oregon.

Good for SoS, bad for recruiting. Stanford is the only other school that can legitimately claim to offer BCS-caliber football and an elite education. We really need to them to regress back to their pre-Harbaugh mean as soon as possible.

I think it takes a different kind of kid to go to Stanford. It doesn't have the rich football history or tradition like ND does, so your going to a school that supports academics more than football. Not saying ND doesn't support academics, but ND has found a way to support both at a unique level without compromising either.

Yea I think they would have been in the top 2 not sure about # 1. The fact that they where a conference champion and the backlash over a 2nd all SEC title game might have been just enough to push them ahead of UF. The computers may have still like UF a bit more but the humans would have probably went for Stanford at # 2.

To me them if this happen Standford and Florida would both have had better resumes than Bama. UF actually has a beef about not being in this game this year. They beat FSU, the other USC, Texas A&M, and LSU. Bama beat Georgia and LSU. Also Bama lost at home.

have a feeling Shaw jumps to the NFL.

Its almost as if Brent Musburger really wants Shaw to go. Every time him and Kirk Herbstreit call a Standford game Brent always raves how the "NFL GMs got be looking at David Shaw!" or "the Sunday folks got to love how Shaw runs that power". If I'm a Standford fan knowing we just lost a great coach to the NFL I'm saying to myself "shut up Brent!".

It's a little known fact that his full name is David Willingham Shaw. Rumor that he is a 3 handicap are to this point unsubstantiated.
