Stanford Postgame

We don’t control our ultimate destiny, but we didn’t make excuses for the season and did what we had to do versus a lesser schedule.

It’s a thankless job and our destiny is now officially out of our hands. But props to the team for owning a bad loss and taking care of business thereafter.

Now it’s just wait-and-see.

I don’t understand the play calling. I don’t understand not running the ball more than passing. They had pretty much the worst run D in the country so logically we keep throwing it. Then when we try to run we don’t get any push. It’s strange to call scoring 45 disappointing but it kinda felt that way. We should have had 300 yards rushing. Oh well. Now we wait.

To my untrained eye it seemed Stanford on 1st and 2nd down were stacking the box trying to atop the run. Thus, more passing attempts due to Stanford stacking the box to stop the run.

* Best game of the season for Coan. Deserves the game ball IMO.
* Not a monster game for Kyren but he did cross the 1,000 yard mark for the second straight year.
* I was really excited by Chris Tyree tonight. Thought he looked better than I've ever seen him.
* Outstanding game for Kevin Austin. He's heating up at the right time. Desperately need him to return for year 5.
* Thought this was the best game of the season for Braden Lenzy. Should try to lock him up for a fifth, too.
* Michael Mayer has killed it lately. Playing at a level we haven't seen since FSU/Toledo.
* Happy as hell we were able to get Takacs in the endzone this time. Mitchell Evans showing out too with a nice catch.
* Great game from the OL in pass pro. Not so great in the running game against a really bad run D.
* Defense was outstanding, especially up front.
* Need to get the Ademilola twins back for 2022. They've both been outstanding this year.
* This was a GREAT tackling day for the DBs. Some really impressive plays by Cam Hart who has been whiffing all year in the open field.

Its been discussed ad nauseam, but the only post game thought I have is:

We are at the point where something needs to be done about that field. It is a liability equal to playing Navy every year.

Which begs the question, why wait to play Buchner until effectively the 4th quarter?

Imagine not liking this guy? Like seriously, listen to the locker room. This entire program is 100% bought in and love playing for BK. Hope he’s got a few more years left in him because I’m loving every single second of this run they’re on

Kelly talked about it in the post-game

"They were in a double eagle front. They really pressured the run. They didn't want us to run the football today. I think they felt like this would have been out of hand quickly if they stayed in there three down front. They sunk both ends down into three techniques, walked up the outside and gave us cover one and favorable matchups across the board. It's one thing you give up, you gave us something else. Then when we went to Buchner, they jumped back into four down and gave us some favorable looks there and we were able to run the football a little bit more effectively."

Imagine being upset with this team AT ALL. Yet read above. Mad we didn't get our backup QB in earlier for more favorable run looks in a game we won 45-14, dafuq?!?

But why not soften the run D so as to allow for a more balanced attack?

Because they didn’t need to…

Stanford was unable to cover the receivers consistently enough for balance to matter. They decided to see if Coan could beat them and it turns out he was all about it. Stanfords game plan was bad IMO and lent itself too blowout, or over early type of game.

If I were to game plan against ND I would drop into zone early, while bringing run blitzes on 2nd and long, 3rd and short. I would sprinkle in a few first down blitzes/stunts while also doing the same on and long situations. Would not stack the box.
