Stadium Noise

ND definitely has disadvantages when it comes to crowd noise, but why is it so difficult to get the noise up now, when it was arguably the loudest stadium in the country back when it only had under 60,000 seats. Now it has 20,000+ more and the noise has died down?

... Because of the bowl-shaped structure, the noise doesn't stay in as well, and increase(d) seating won't help all that much. It also makes the experience less enjoyable, as the the seating is further away from the action, and more bunched in. That's why double deckers are generally superior to bowl stadiums. They allow more noise to stay in ...

Good point. The (relatively) loudest I remember the stadium being was I was not at the 1971 USC game. I had (believe it or not) what I felt were better things to do. I could hear the crowd roaring from the Library to La Fortune to The Rock to Holy Cross Hall (my dorm, which was demolished around 1990) on the "outskirts" of campus and to SMC.

I was on the move and was surprised, based on the noise, that we'd lost when all was said and done.

Amped up, electronically pumped out sound may be loud, but it ain't the real thing by any means. Would I, an aging Alum, give up my seat to someone with better pipes and legs just to bump the decimeters?

Fuck no!!!

Dshans,

Apparently there was a brawl in that game, and probably helped the crowd get even more fired up.

If you ask me, crowd could use some green man. Not joking.

My memory is a bit hazy, but you may well be right. That could have been the last year that that damn horse was given a sideline pass ...

If you think ND stadium is quiet try going to a Stanford home game. It's like watching golf. They still seem to win a lot of games though.

I was there last year when ND played. There Student Section was pretty rowdy, but yeah, you could see PLENTY of green shirts in the stands. It was almost like a bowl game, split nearly 50/50.

Depends on the game, Stanford game in '12 was the loudest it's ever been when I have been there.

The stadium was ELECTRIC vs. Stanford! It just keep getting louder & louder.

As a side note, my wife is an usher on the field and has been doing it for 12 years. She said the absolute loudest game on the field was USC 2005. She said you couldn't have a conversation with the person next to you because it was so loud.

I get called punk a lot by you...maybe think of another insult? It surely won't be the last time you need it.

Methinks you are correct. I should shed the Clint Eastwood reference and "shoot" for something a bit more contemporary.

Just promise to lock me away should I start railing at empty chairs ...

Just for your sake mate. I personally use Punk all the time, e.i., the #1 Superpunk currently in the world goes to Cristian Ronaldo, the #2 is Justin Bieber and a close #3 is Johnny Manziel.
But for your sake, to be able aptly express your anger, to have a new fresh insult is very exciting and gives you a better release.

I'll film it, viral youtube video, and then, I may lock you away...but I would bet it was the chairs fault.

Blue hairs, but now we're just splitting hairs.

The older alums tend to donate more. Should we tell them to suck it up or not come and risk losing their donations? I don't like alienating anybody in the ND fanbase, but it's high time that ND Stadium becomes an intimidating place to play.
Maybe the younger alums need to sack up and start contributing more. Obviously they won't be naming any buildings but $500 to join the Corby Society for alums up to 10 years out isn't that much.

I HATE GETTING YELLED AT TO SIT DOWN WHEN ND IS ON DEFENSE AND IT'S THIRD DOWN. But if I'm going to pay $100 for a ticket, I don't wanna get thrown out. USC night game last year I almost did and I was irate! It's 3rd down and Greg Jennings is putting the team on his back. Get your asses up and cheer at least on 3rd down. That's not much to ask.
If that actually happened, the usher was completely wrong and there's no way he would have followed through / thrown you out. "Take a staND" was an official policy of the university last year. The "official rules" are that you're SUPPOSED to stand. I don't doubt that the cranky pantses behind you would have told you to sit, but I'd be shocked if an usher enforced it.

Who the hell is Greg Jennings?

It would be nice if certain sections were designated as "standing sections." Fans who don't like it can buy tickets in a different, more expensive section where they can discuss cardigan sweaters and "How those darn kids wear baggy pants all the time!" Or the lower bowl becomes a standing section while the upper bowl is reserved for the leg crossing crowd who wouldn't know a football from their asshole. Put the crotchey ushers in those sitting sections. Problem solved.

Dawg, I haven't had a paycheck since summer '10 and I have 2 more years of skewl before I get a big boy job. I know that's my choice, but I make sacrifices to pay for tickets and by God I should be able to stand and cheer my school.

I agree but I was severely intoxicated and wasn't about to argue with an usher. He told me to sit. And drinking tickets don't look good when you apply for the Bar.

To be fair, you probably haven't seen the show. 'Always Sunny in Philadelphia'? Lol.

To be honest, I've only seen snippets. My son tried to explain it to me once, when he and friends did a "Green Man" thing at a Twins baseball game. It sailed over my head for an in-the-park home run.
