I told you all, Eifert will play wide receiver this year. (Sorry didn't go over all 100 pages of this post to see if someone else mentioned it.)

Kelly told you everything you needed to know. He said it was HIPPA and Buckley. And if you watched his facial expressions, that provided the rest. Buckley insinuated that their was a behavioral or academic issue involved. This would explain why with a medical issue Tee left a four-year to ND on the table, (musta been off the table.) (Sorry didn't go over all 100 pages of this post to see if someone else mentioned it.)

I agree about Rees, not about the record for the backup. Rees has hit his ceiling. It's not fair to assume that of the back up though.

You are probably correct and I apologize but inexperience will not help us any that is for sure. :) I hope I am proved wrong because I would love nothing more than to see us do better so I can eat some fresh crow.

It is what it is at this point. He gone and he ain't returning (presumably). Although, there have been a few guys that left ND for academic reasons then returned. Gary Gray, Julius Jones come to mind.

Regardless, this team has more potential then last season. You get a year under Lynch, Tuitt, and Ishaq. Nix also gets a year under his belt of playing time. Te'o came back. I think the secondary actually has more athleticism then last season.

The offense will be run with a more athletic QB. The offense will be able to spread the ball out instead of Rees forcing it to Floyd. I'm still seeing TJ wide open on several plays if Rees had only checked off a double covered Floyd.

Inexperience isn't all that bad in this situation. I will take Golson's inexperience over Rees any day.

I, as usual, am interested in the O-Line. Coach started, as mentioned in a previous post of my opinion on start-of-practice "psychology", the most veteran personnel. Thus Lombard and Nichols get the right side. Golic gets center because Cave will be brought back slowly so he can avoid risk in explosive driving off the ball. Lombard, as guessed [foggily I'll admit but it was his projected position when he came on campus], gets the move to right guard. The intrigue is the "second" line. Here Coach's rather consistent comments about Nick Martin manifest concretely. NMartin is listed behind Nichols at RT, and, my guess will be that he gets the first team job as the practices go on. That leaves Prestwood. They don't see him as wasted behind Zach Martin. So they've placed him at left guard behind Watt. I do not believe that anyone saw this coming [that I have read anyway]. This positioning is the critical "reserve lineman" positioning which Kelly et al have used both of the past two seasons. The second left guard has come in when either guard needs a break or is dinged up.

I believe that Hiestand and Kelly may already have a vision for the O-Line this season and it is only vaguely hidden in this start-of-practice. That vision is: ZMartin + Watt + Cave + Lombard + NMartin as the Five Fingers of Doom, and Nichols backing the Tackles, and Prestwood backing the Guards, and Hegarty backing Cave. Golic as an emergency reserve, as would be Hanratty. This is far too much analysis for the skimpy data, but we're having fun here, so this is how it looks to me with the placements of NMartin and Prestwood and Lombard.

Updated first post. Interviews to come after practice.

Day 1 Notes (3/21/12)

First team Oline:
Nichols
Lombard
Golic (Cave still out)
Watt
ZMartin

Second Team:
NMartin
Hanratty
Hegarty
Prestwood
Heggie

  • KLM running with second team, Lynch and Tuitt with first
  • Golson running 2nd team offense
  • Toma, Jones and Goodman 1st team WR
  • RB George Atkinson III in No. 4 today. Originally listed as such last season, but wore 34 - flip of his twin brother Josh in 43, their father's number with the Raiders.
  • Anthony Rabasa working with the OLBs today. Listed as inside. Otherwise 4 players in that group.

not the most intimidated unit. personally i'm not surprised with the o line look as of now. tate was running in the two deep last year battling for a starting spot before he went down injured. interested to see prestwood line up at guard. like our two deep look even without cave. coach hiestand has a good group to start with.

I just can't believe we don't have any better options than Goodman. I do not see what the coaches see in this guy. Daniel Smith is not good enough to surpass Goodman on the depth chart?

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why Goodman even plays?

You're going to see DaVaris Daniels and Tyler Eifert lined up in place of him at WR at times IMO.

I also promise you that Toma doesn't play more than 50% of snaps a game.

Regarding the WRs: as I've been saying--- first day line-ups are almost always the Coach putting the most veteran guys out there. As practices go on, the best players replace them with the first units in their time. Anyone thinking that Davaris Daniels will not get his chance to work with the "ones" hasn't been listening to the Coach.

Toma+Jones+Daniels+Eifert may well be a very intimidating line-up in a Kelly offense.

wouldn't mind this at all...hate to bring up a sore subject, but that tool that went to houston would be walking into immediate meaningful playing time.

It's just so painful to watch Goodman on the field. As far as Toma, he is a good possession receiver (Wes Welker) and I think he should see a lot more than he has. But that is my opinion.

Eifert lined up as receiver is gonna be cool. I have him as a TE in NCAA 12 but alot of the times I motion him out as a receiver and do a hot route and nobody can cover him. I hope to see that this year in real life.

Now this combo I can see being great eventually, as long as Goodman is nowhere near the field. I still think they should consider Riddick as a RB/WR hybrid or just keep him at WR since we are stacked already in the RB department.

I cannot stop fantasizing about Niklas destroying DB's! Can you imagine some of the down field blocks on runs? Eifert and Niklas split out with Daniels is ahh well I can't think of a good enough word. If our O line is as good as I think, We will be EXTREMELY tough to defend with our dual threat quarterback and running backs.

If we take care of the football and eliminate dumb penalties we score every drive.

My only concern about this team is our secondary.

I'm with NDOM on Goodman. In no way should he be playing offense or returning next year. He's just not good enough. Daniels or Smith need to pass him on the depth chart to give the new QB some targets. Eifert at WR should be fun to watch, but one play with Goodman on offense is one too many.

Please let Danny Spond stay healthy this year!

Also, WTF is Desmond Howard doing at practice. Get the skunkbear out of there.

Sounds like DaVaris Daniels should have a really good year if he plays the way the coaches keep talking him up. Let's hope.
