While I think that most certainly is a sign of things to come from Greathouse, we have to remember that 2 or 3 WR’s above him had to play with Buch today.
True but I think with Hartman we will have a higher paced offense you’ll see games where all 10 WR’s get the ball

If Hartman is as good as advertised, we should have a shot to beat everyone we play. In my book that makes us a title contender.
Do you honestly think that our defense can defend against the teams we can expect to play in the playoffs? No matter how good Hartman can play in a new system with players he hasn’t played with, we can’t rely on one side of the ball when we have question marks on defense at the most important positions.

We’re going to absolutely light some teams up so I’m right there with ya.

But, last year at Wake, he only had 3 guys eclipse that number. So, maybe we go a little bit deeper than that but is Greathouse going to be the 4th receiving option. Don’t think he gets it. My over under would be 30. He had 5 guys that were over 30 last season.

He said a shot to beat everyone. He’s one of the all-time leading passers in ACC history. The defense he plays with here will be better than anything he’s had before. The running game will as well.

He’s what, 6th (?) in odds for Heisman. This is hardly a controversial opinion. I think today just solidified that he’s not as behind schedule as it might’ve seemed through Fall camp.

He said everyone we play. Who on our schedule do you think can stop us offensively? Clemson is gonna be worse defensively and we ran all over them. USC who knows about them they are the only team I’m afraid we might have a hard time stopping offensively but vise versa. Ohio State I like our odds at home they won’t have Stroud bailing them out

Looking at it again that was probably the best QB play since 2015 from Hman.

Others got here first but I said a shot to beat everyone we play. Which, if we do, puts us in the CFP, which is the definition of being a title contender. Would I pick us to beat Georgia right now? Of course not. But we can deal with them when we get there.

WTF are you talking about? What question marks do we have? We have really good corners, we have a number of really good LBs (and ascending LB options), we have 1 safety we expect to breakout this year (and who showed flashes last year) and we have some guys who look to be surging on the defensive line.

We have fewer questions on this defense than we've had in the past. We are basically running 2-3 deep at every position. It'd be great to have a first round draft pick at every level and sure, we don't have that right now but we have a shit load of talent on the defensive side of the ball and we watched very vanilla defense today.

Guess who'll be joining the competition this summer/fall: Logan Diggs, Cam Hart, Eli Raridon, Prince Kollie (maybe?), Harper, Jadarian Price, Adon Shuler, Ben Minich, Christian Gray, Bauman, Evans, Jagusah, Love, Vernon, Traore, Bell, Flanagan, Absher, Otting, Terek, Mukam, Kaleb Smith (KK).

Out of that group, we can comfortably expect 5-6 players to emerge. I think our defense is capable of playing complementary football for us. I think our offense really looks poised to put up big points all year. Hartman put up 21 pts in 1.5 quarters and didn't really make it look difficult. Let's put a complete line in front of him and a bevy of WR/TE/RB options around him and see where this team can go.

Some of you have to remind yourselves why you are fans. It's to cheer and hope for a team that can transcend!!!

TB should only see the field during blowouts or an injury to Hartman.

With the presence of Hartman, you have to feel good about the receivers. I learned yesterday that Sam puts the ball right where it needs to be and goes through his progressions better than any other Notre Dame QB in a long time.

I’m confident that Merriweather and Colzie would’ve had very solid stat lines yesterday if they were on the golf team. With that kind of passing game paired with this OL/RBs, this offense will be so difficult to defend.

Spring Game replay for those who didn't catch it or wanna rewatch it 100x (like me) until August 26th.

Thanks for posting. I was coaching kids baseball all day and didn’t get to see it yesterday.

Obviously Hartman is a stud. But I feel bad for Buchner man. It’s just not clicking for him. His feet look a mess, his touch isn’t close, he just doesn’t look like a winning quarterback right now. Hopefully a year under Hartman can help him make the leap.

As of right now, I think it’s fair to give the nod to both Ohio State and USC over Notre Dame. They get the benefit of the doubt.

ND gets them both at home, but Ohio State has been churning out elite quarterbacks year after year and has recruited at such an elite level at every position.

We all know about USC and Williams, but they’ve really placed an emphasis at beefing up their front seven as well. They’re going to get Bear Alexander too. They’ll be a real force, and I expect them to be in Playoff contention.

Clemson is a head scratcher. Vernables was a great defensive coordinator, and you can tell last year that they missed him. They’ve got unknowns at quarterback, but Clemson is a very tough environment to win on the road. You can’t just chalk that up as a win.

ETA: What’s up with Pitt and NC State? Both, especially Pitt, have been playing well lately. Are they returning a lot? Are they expected to be any good?

You make good points. In 2023, Notre Dame won’t have to keep the score down or play the game in a phone booth to beat the good teams. The last handful of years, teams would stack the box and make Book/Coan/Pyne beat them. Do they want to try that with Hartman? Haha, good luck.

Buchner struggles with setting the protection.
Hartman, like any top 10 QB, is making pre-snap reads & 90% sure where the ball is going before rye snap. That’s why he was hitting Greathouse wide open so much.
Buchner is more of a catch the snap, look at my first read, not open, scramble a little and look at my second read, then take off, type of a QB.
Hartman was getting the ball out fast so he wasn’t getting as much pressure.

I agree with this. What’s concerning is that Buchner had the benefit of the red jersey - i.e., I can’t get hit - and yet he still looks so uncomfortable, rushed and flustered out there. Again, Driskell and other talking heads talk this guy up so much. Ask yourself this, what on God’s green earth has Buchner done in his limited playing time to warrant starting and playing over Hartman?

Thus, Freeman and Notre Dame knew what they were doing by bringing Hartman in. There was never going to be a quarterback controversy or battle. It was Hartman’s job. He didn’t forgo the NFL Draft or transfer to a school to sit on the bench.

He’s the quarterback. Buchner (and hopefully the others) may benefit from watching Hartman for a year.

I agree completely. They knew the limitations of Buchner/Pyne which forced ND to run the ball. ND has an elite offensive line, an elite quarterback, a stable of good backs, and some good talent at WR. The offense should put vastly improved/put up more points.

I highly doubt you’ll see anymore ‘22 ND-Ohio State games (defense plays well, but the offense is hardly a threat to get a first down).

“At home” against OSU would imply that the crowd won’t be 60% clad in scarlet…

You do realize most programs look great in their spring games?? Our secondary and LBs have major issues.

Our coaching staff is still very inexperienced.

Time to put down the kool aid. 9-3 would be an excellent season all things considered. 10-2 would be magical. No way we make playoffs w 2 losses.

ND is not at an elite level.

I was thinking the same thing……I expect the LB unit and the CBs to be a strength. I’m a little less optimistic on the safeties but that is more due to less proven experience and less than ideal numbers at the position. I still think that the D will play well overall this upcoming season.

I would like more depth at safety, and the more talented younger LBs to overtake the less talented but more experienced LBs. But just as most programs look great in their spring game, most programs have question marks at this time of year. Ours have plausible answers, at least.

What I said is we have a shot to win every game on our schedule. That’s because I’m looking at potentially the most dynamic offense since 2015, and a defense that should be good enough to keep us in games - just as it has been every year since 2017.

Of course I’m not predicting we run the table, because we play some good teams and it’s college football and shit happens. But writing this season off because we’re “not a title contender” - as some talking head was doing h yesterday? - feels ridiculous. If that’s the bar go root for someone else.

I think the DB’s will be fine. We will have multi year starters back there. We have a few different type players back there and the spring game isn’t the best way to gauge how well they’ll play. Do we have kyle Hamilton back there nope. We do have multiple players that play well together. It could be much much worse back there.

Don’t forget we have Morrison, Hart and Mickey at the CB positions that make the safeties better as well.

Are we really surprised that Hartman looked great? I thought Buchner was disappointing, but his OL didn't help him out. And it seems like the coaching staff still doesn't trust him to handle the offense.....which tells us everything we need to know about this QB competition.

I mean idk if I can blame them. He looked so indecisive the entire time, even when he had protection and people open.
