So, is the OP current?
It feels like we just lost half the team.

*edit- With Tommy leaving we're suddenly very young at TE. Yikes.

I still believe next year should be a build towards 2022. We have a lot of young talent and now a new d coordinator and likely all new position coaches on D except CB. Next year will have some ups and downs but we should be circling 2022 and 2023 as the realistic championship runs.

Probably not really something that would be “announced” for Lugg and Gibbons. Ben did announce for NFL

This is fair, the roster should be peaking those years. I wouldn't count out another run this next year too, though. Always room for surprises and the schedule will be easier than the next two years.

Really hate covid-19 right now because I would've definitely been going to the coach's clinic this year to see the defensive install and offensive position battles.

This times 100. I'd rather see ND go 8-4 in 2021, have all the youngins get a ton of experience and be more experienced for 2022.

A step back season should still be something like 10-2 for where the program is. As they said on the Shamrock Podcast, Jack Coan is good enough to give you a Wisconsin season, which is 10-2.

No, the opposite.

First, ND's record since 2017 speaks for itself. Second, playing more younger guys shows high school recruits you can play early at ND.

I dunno man, anything less than 10-2 is going to be considered a disappointment. If Notre Dame is really an elite program you just don't intentionally go for a rebuild when you can conceivably reload.

at Florida State
vs Toledo
vs Purdue
vs* Wisconsin (Soldier Field)
vs Cincinnati
at Virginia Tech
BYE
vs USC
vs North Carolina
vs Navy
at Virginia
vs Georgia Tech
at Stanford

I think Notre Dame can go 12-0 against that schedule and I don't think they should make themselves worse for 2021 because we play Ohio State in 2022 and 2023. Plus I just don't think Kelly's competitive spirit would let him do anything other than attempt to put the best product on the field.

If you count the 12 personnel as ND’s base offense in 2020 (Wright and Tremble are starters but Davis is not) then they’re losing the entire starting offense except for Kyren and Patterson (who will likely be switching positions). It’s hard for me to see how that won’t be a rebuild.

10-2 is possible but it won’t be a walk in the park. We’re replacing way too many experienced players to not have growing pains. If BK’s tenure has taught us one thing, there will most likely be a learning curve with sloppy play and closer than should be scores. Play to win but I’m not expecting ND to be in contention for a playoff spot next year.

Does Kendall Abdur-Rahman need to stay at running back? I’d give him a shot at safety or corner.

It's also not too far fetched to talk yourself into 7-5, 8-4 if you're being honest with yourself. FSU will be in their second year at that regime and will be fired up for a much younger ND to come to town Labor Day weekend. Wisconsin, Cincy, @VT, USC, UNC are all tough ones, too. Then there's always a chance for a headscratcher like Purdue, @UVA, @Stanford (we haven't had much success on the farm, finally broke that streak in '19 but still).

I could see us having another strong season but I for one am not expecting a CFP run in '21, and I'm generally optimistic.

Va Tech is a dumpster fire. FSU is still one till proven otherwise.

IMO, there's much more to gain in 2022 and 2023 rather than hoping for 10-2 in 2021 and a NY6 bowl game.

ND is a very good program right now, but not elite.

10-2 would be really strong record in 2021 if schedule stays as is, but 8-4 with a completely new offensive personnel, losing half your defense, losing your DC...not really disappointing if you're ND.

I'd be pretty surprised if ND wins 10 games. Defense should be good, but maybe not quite as good as the past two years while adjusting to a new system. Offense might be a total dumpster fire... or it could b e good... but simply put they are retooling the entire offensive line and there are almost certainly going to be some growing pains.

Two way too early interesting but under the radar position battles wondered if anyone has similar thoughts:

TE2: Tackas vs. Bauman. And how important is this spot compared to LY?

3T/SDE: Talk about MTA maybe moving the DE depending on what scheme Freeman chooses. Would open for one Ademilola and close for another. Could Rylie Mills drive either discussion?

I would imagine less.

Someone was saying that they like MTA moving to DE, not sure who it was. I would've thought Rylie Mills would be a more appropriate guy to move. Needless to say, DT looks pretty solid whether someone moves or not.
