Vintage era cards came back from PSA today. The Nolan Ryan was unable to be graded. Something to do with the card thickness. The rest came back as initially expected! Which makes me want to break slab and resubmit my modern era cards. I'm still upset about some of those lower grades.

71 Topps Swoboda - PSA 6. (I found this card in a shoebox). 130point value is roughly $35. Nothing crazy

71 Topps Rookies Don Baylor, Dusty Baker, Tom Paciorek - PSA 6. 130 point value currently decreased from the time I sent it in to about $150. Still decent though.

Pretty happy with these. If I can get my higher value cards sold, I might net about $1200. Not the "couple grand" I originally thought I might get, but not chump change either. We'll see. This has been quite the learning experience.

Post #127 has a photo of the cards I sent in. I don't really have the proper camera and lighting to show my cards and their defects. With that said, after this experience 1) I still have no idea what to look for and what to expect because I think most of the time, even with their standards in place, it's still somewhat subjective 2) vintage cards appear to have more grace than modern cards and 3) I probably won't pay to send in anymore cards unless I know it's a 9 or 10....which most of what I have left almost certainly will not get those grades. It's expensive and far more difficult to sell them than I had expected. (I had about 100 cards I wanted to sell, 20 of which were graded, and I've sold a grand total of 3)

Just a heads up if you are looking for a solid new card release with a lot of Notre Dame goodness, the 2024 Bowman Chrome University Football dropped a few weeks ago and looks awesome, reasonably priced, lots on ebay, etc. etc. etc. Has Leonard, Love, Morrison, Angelli, Mitchell and Evans autos. The Love stuff is going like hot cakes. Anywho, checklist below!

Debating if I should go with PSA or BGS. PSA is the more widely used grader in the Pokemon space. They're also easier graders according to the reading I've done. The card is pack fresh so I'm fairly sure it would get a PSA 10.

BGS are tougher graders but are much cheaper. A BGS black label sold for over $10k. I doubt this card would get that. The centering isn't a 10. But BGS 10 gold labels are above $7,000 right now.

Regarding bolded, don't be so sure. I grade my son's cards occasionally and I probably get back as many 9s as I do 10s fresh out of a pack. Probably more 9s tbh.

PSA is bullshit but if you intend to sell it, use them. Market for it will be bigger. They are typically more lenient on centering too.

Sorry, but couldn't resist this post. I began collecting baseball cards as a 12 year old in 1952. We had a little neighborhood baseball league where we played "our" teams using regular cards but stacked up our "lineups" using the bubble gum cards we had. --- kept scores, batting averages, the whole works. Because whole teams were in your line-up plus subs (there were rules for pinch hitters and relief pitchers), there was extra incentive to get whole teams if you could --- trading with buddies for a player you didn't have was common and ruthless.

So, I tried to get a New York Giants line-up --- surprisingly hard. I had to trade back to get their centerfielder who was a rookie the previously bubble-gum year. Card looked a bit weird compared to the 1952s, but at least I had their young centerfielder, a guy named Mays. It was a Bowman bubble gum 1951 card in reasonably good shape.

I saved all those cards and in 1958 went to Notre Dame (of course NOT taking them but storing them safely away.) Four years later, I graduated and went on to Grad School, still leaving the cards (without much thought) behind. While at grad school, the family moved.
During that move, and shrouded in mystery ........... poof.

I have zero knowledge on the Pokemon front, but my recent PSA grading experience is documented in this thread. It was eye opening to say the least. Congrats on the card though! Whether a 10 or 9, it still sounds like a great pull. Will you sell it? If so, keep expectations in line. Card dealers are in the business of making money, so for you to get full return, you probably have to sell it on your own and somewhere that won't charge a crazy commission. Selling cards on eBay was much more difficult than I expected. I had better luck on FB Marketplace.

Agreed. I sent in a couple "fresh out of the pack" cards that I was certain would be a 10. Edges, centering, gloss, etc. all pristine. Came back a 9, another an 8!

PSA does have the bigger market share and more respect among collectors. You also pay for that during grading. My experience with grading junk wax and modern cards didn't go as planned. I pretty much only care about vintage now.

I have purchased some more graded modern cards over the last few years. All PSA and all 9 or 10s (depending on what the card is). I'd like to start buying more graded vintage cards but I'm not sure where the sweet spot is for ROI. Should I be looking at 4-6? I feel like anything graded 7 or higher is outside of budget. I usually only look into 60s and 70s baseball. I'd love some 1950s cards but for my budget, I'd have to buy 1 or 2 (maybe 3) most likely and at that point, idk if it's worth it.

Depending on where you live you can also find large card shows that will often have booths from PSA or BGS and they can talk you through it. You can also show it to dealers that do a lot of grading and they can pre-grade/prep it for you, which may lead to an offer on the spot as well. At a massive card show like the National they will even do same day grading if you are leery of shipping and what not, though it is pricier of course.

Thanks! Funny thing is I pulled it years ago and never realized how valuable it was. I was scrolling insta last week and saw a guy ripping old packs to try and find one, and I was like hey that looks familiar lol.

I will probably end up selling it. I don't have any real attachment to that card. I think the value will continue to go up, but it's a modern card so there will always be way more supply than vintage cards. It's from 2019.

If I get it graded I'll probably sit on it until this time next year. The card is a latias & latios full art, but people call it the "lovers duo". So I think a big part of what's driving it's price explosion right now is people buying it for Valentine's Day.

You have the right idea. With vintage, a mid-grade is awesome. I have a graded 1968 Mantle. It’s a 5 but it looks great considering the age. @Armyirish47 is spot on w/ some good advice. Local shows are a great start. Remember they paid a vendor fee so they need to recoup their investment before they can build on their profit. Be patient and you’ll get a good deal. Then if you have an opportunity to go to the National or one of the huge Dallas Card Shows, they are worth the travel.

He may have. Mickey's my guy growing up and still my favorite. I bet I had over 100 Mickey Mantle cards. I honestly don't know how many were rookie cards, probably a few. My idea is to try and buy these cards either Raw or PSA1 and then over time, continually upgrade each card via trades etc (as my budget allows, of course). Ultimately, I'd be completely satisfied with PSA 3 grades for every card I can collect in that set. I love the idea of starting small and gradually trading up over time. It'll give my kids and I something to do (as they've recently gotten into cards). The big names in that 2-3 grade range are typically $500-$750 give or take. I'm not trying to spend $10,000 up front all at once. That takes the fun out of the hunt.

The card shops around Indy are notorious for gouging. I haven't attempted any flea markets or garage sales yet. I'm a little nervous getting scammed with re-prints online, which is why I kind of want to get PSA1 and not Raw. But if someone has a lead on any of these, I'd be curious what it'd cost to get this ball rolling.

My budget has been fluid as I come to grips with some of these prices. I also realize that I'm shooting for centered cards and that comes with a premium price tag. Even if it's a PSA 1 or 2, I'm still searching for ones that prioritize centering. I've seen some PSA 4s and 5s that aren't centered at all, and I just can't bring myself to wanting a card like that, regardless of grade/price.

My teenage son is interested in cards now (basketball only). He’s interested in finding cards, possibly getting them graded, and trying to flip to make money.
