South Bend/Granger Residents: Sell me on moving my family there

My wife and I are both graduates and practicing Catholics. We would have the chance to teach at the university and are drawn to Catholic intellectual community there. We have 3 boys (3, 2, and newborn) and I currently work as a physician on an island with a near-tropical climate (you may wonder why we'd consider moving back!).

Aside from the university itself, what do you like about living there? House prices (at least near the university) have gotten really high - and we know someone who was shot just off Notre Dame Ave. Winter weather is terrible. What keeps you there? What is there to do for young children in the winter time? How would you sell it to me? South Bend or Granger?

I wouldn't worry about the kids and wintertime, if they are healthy
they always find something to do, indoors or out. They like to play basketball in Indiana

Are you kidding about home prices? Or maybe just out of touch due to being out of the country. Housing is way higher in most major metro areas. And traffic is nothing in SB compared to your big cities. You don't
have to live near campus to have an easy commute, a half hour or so.

I moved to Granger in March (4 months). South Bend is a no for me dawg. Highly dependent on lifestyle. Chicago is a great weekend trip. Lake Michigan is great, have a condo and boat parked in St Joe.

We will see how the winter goes.

I mean I feel like this all depends on how important it is to you to have an academic teaching position at a high-level university. Those are about the toughest jobs to get in America. South Bend can be a tough place to live for reasons we here are all well aware of. But if they are offering both (?) of you guys TT jobs at Notre Dame...that's kind of like winning the lottery, if that is something that matters to you.

Granger's really nice. Anyone who talks shiit about it because it's next to South Bend is silly. I've lived in some great places since college, Hinsdale, Naperville, Scottsdale, Laguna Beach then back to Scottsdale and we're looking for a summer place back in Michiana and it's down to Granger, Long Beach or in between specifically Galena Twp out by La Lumiere School. As far as Affordable stuff around $500k, Granger blows me away.

I can tell you one thing... the house below goes for $15M by me. So lots of bang for your buck

I'm leaning towards Granger cuz we have family in Long Beach and they have boats and I could ride my bike to Portillo's if I'm in Granger.

This says all the right things. Long Beach is a little raucous and oddly Mediterranean in the summer. Also no elbow room there.

Michigan. Not the team. Michigan is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Seriously, I know that sounds dramatic, but you’re 4 hours from northwest Michigan. If you’ve been there, you know.

Also, if I worked at ND I’d move to St. Joe, Michigan and commute. Great schools. Right on the beach.

Elkhart is really nice as well in certain parts. My future in-laws have a place on the river there and it’s beautiful

If you move to Granger you’re only 5-10 minutes from Raising Cane’s…

What should I know about Raising Cane's? Muncie just got one...
I don’t understand how Fort Wayne can’t get that or Zaxby’s. If Funcie has one and Lafayette, Noblesville, and Mishawaka do, why not The Fort?

Cane’s is legit. Cane’s sauce is money and I think their tenders are the best out there. I like my chicken tenders like my women: thick & juicy. The menu is basic. Tenders. Fries. Bread. Coleslaw. Some folks like to make sandwiches with the tenders, bread, and sauce. It’s all pretty legit, but you really have to be in the mood for chicken tenders bc that’s all they do. I’d rank it marginally ahead of Zaxby’s and way ahead of Popeye’s.

I use to travel to Grand Haven for work. Great little summer resort city on Lake Michigan, but it was miserable in the winter and it's not that far up.

IMO, the bolded is your answer and everything else is noise.

Unless you're moving to a crime riddled area in SB, I don't think it should be a concern. As others have suggested, there's always the surrounding areas. Good luck on your decision.

In all seriousness, congratulations on the opportunity. Best option is to move into the Granger area. Its only 10 minutes from campus and 5 minutes from all of you shopping/dining(Hacienda). It also has the best school district with Penn elementary and high school. In terms of winter activities for kids, there are all kinds of winter sports to get involved in. My kids play indoor soccer, hockey, and basketball.

Granger is actually a really nice area and Penn is one of the top highschools in the state in regards to sports, their teams win State or compete in the state tournament in just about every level of sports.

Penn also has 3 of the top rated elementary schools in the state of Indiana.

I grew up just north of the border, lived in NC for 10 years, then moved back temporarily while we looked for a home near Grand Rapids so we'd be equidistant between mine and my wife's family. The only reason I wouldn't live in Granger was because my family would be wayyy too close.

If you have the opportunity to teach at Notre Dame (which, congrats, that a pretty great opportunity), do you have the opportunity to teach at other top-tier universities? I assume you’re not making this choice in a vacuum. It probably would depend at least somewhat on where else you’re weighing.

That said with three young kids, cost of living/housing is a real factor, and while I’m sure home prices immediately around campus have gone up from where they once were, South Bend in general still a very affordable housing market compared to most big cities and many college towns.

Grand Rapids is a great area. I wish South Bend area was 1/4 as good as Grand Rapids.

We've been here two years and love it. Same distance to the city as the lake. We didn't get out much this summer since the 1.5 year old isn't old enough to be bribed to behave, but next summer we'll be out a ton more!
