Another question for the super nerds (you know who you are).

If I dismiss a follower and hire a new one, can I get the first guy back? I need a steward for my home in the Hearthfire DLC but my current follower is ineligible. I'd like to hire a follower, make him my steward, and then go back and get my original follower again.

At the very least for the most part, yes. The only followers I'm not sure of are the ones you need to pay. But Lydia and Sven will both hang out at your house if you dismiss them for example. All you have to do is say follow me.

This. Virtually every follower in the game has a place they return to when you dismiss them, so you can almost always pick them up again. Hirelings do the same thing, but you'll have to pay them to follow you again once you dismiss them.

Who's your current follower?

Stenvar. I like that he doesn't use magic and can take a good amount of damage. Between him and my horse I hardly get attacked in battle.

Thanks. I try to stay off the wikis to keep from spoiling plot lines so I might ask some questions here that might seem easily Google-able.

Unlike some previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim makes it really hard to permanently lose anything positive, so I wouldn't worry to much. It's actually one of my biggest gripes with the game as it feels extremely "hand-holdy" at times.

Yeah I accidentally sold the Mace of the Crusader in Oblivion around level 15 and kicked myself for it for the rest of the game.

Stenvar is good, I've taken him a few times. He's great for all those Nord crypts: "I prefer fighting bandits to fighting Draugr. 'Least the bandits know when to stay dead."

If you liked Stenvar as a tank, you could also consider the housecarls Lydia, Iona, and Jordis as well. They're all capable of maxing Block/One Hand weapons (As well as getting Archery to 98) while Stenvar is better with Two Handers. The housecarls also have 100 more health at level 50.

I stumbled across this Alchemy Pocket Reference recently, and it's been very helpful for remembering which ingredients I need to stockpile for any given character. The "Slow, Weakness to Magic" and "Weakness to Fire/ Frost/Poison" poisons have been very useful on my Mage.

One thing I don't like so far is without googling, I don't know where to go to complete objectives.

For instance, I just retrieved the Bear Claw and found the secret of Bleak Falls, and returned to tell the arrogant wizard about what I found.

I leave that fiasco, and it tells me to go find Jaromir Jagir or something like that, and I have no idea where to begin my search.

Am I missing something on the tool/map? Or am I just not primal enough to cut it in the medieval world.

Select the mission on your objectives list and then go to your map. It will show you where the objective is located .

After you return the tablet to Farengar, the next step involves talking to Jarl Baalgruff. He's in the same building as Farengar, usually sitting on the throne. If you're having trouble finding your next objective: (1) make sure you're only tracking that one quest; (2) highlight the quest; and (3) press Square (not sure which button it is on XBox, but it'll tell you at the bottom of the screen). That'll bring up the map and center it on your objective. A few quests intentionally don't give you a clear map marker, but they usually give you plenty of direction within the quest description itself.

Am I missing something on the tool/map? Or am I just not primal enough to cut it in the medieval world.

Buy the Spell Tome - Clairvoyance from Farengar. It'll highlight a path to your current quest objective.

Thank you. I tried to find Jarl, but he's not at his thrown. Not knowing what to do, I rummaged the 'basement'/living quarters of his 'castle' looking for him. I came across some tomatoes I couldn't resist, and wound up in prison. I picked a lock in prison, and fell through to a cellar with no apparent exit (although this is where I left off and I'm sure there's a way out).

If I'm patient, this game is going to be epic for me. I like the concept and how vast it is, I'm just not to a point where I feel in control of everything (feel like I'm passing things I shouldn't be, lol).

I think you should try and figure some of this stuff out on your own--not because your questions are annoying or anything like that. But because part of the fun of the game is that you discover something you didn't know existed and to me, that's fun. For example, the Clairvoyance spell Whiskey just mentioned is really useful. I didn't know it existed until I ran into someone that sold it and I was pumped. Does that make sense?

Just to clarify, "jarl" is a title; it's the medieval Scandinavian equivalent of Earl (similar to a Duke or a Count). Each Hold in Skyrim has its own jarl-- Baalgruf in Whiterun, Leila in Riften, Ulfric in Windhelm, etc.

You will frequently need to speak with the jarl of whichever Hold you're questing in. Though they're usually not hard to find. Just look for the tallest/ most fortified building in town.

Yeah, totally. I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing an obvious navigation tool. But you're right I'm sure about stumbling across things as you go.

Good to know. I did make my first batch of tomato soup, Whiskey. Thought you'd be proud.

That's good; you know how to cook now. But Vegetable Soup is the real secret sauce for Warrior-types. Combine tomato, cabbage, potato, and leek at any Cooking Pot, and then eat it before you head into battle. Good for 12 minutes of unlimited Power Attacking/ Shield Bashing.

I'm just wondering, what would happen if our wives/girlfriends/prospective ladies stumbled upon this thread?

LOL.

I've heard about this, planted the appropriate veggies at Lakeview Manor, and made tons of vegetable soup but my Stamina bar seems to go down with every power attack just like normal. Am I missing something?

Vegetable Soup will help your health/stamina regeneration by 1 point per second for 12 minutes if I recall. It's not game breaking, but it will allow you to power attack more often. There are other items, like Ale, that will instantly restore some Stamina to you, but they can slow your regeneration as well. Beef Stew is also a good choice. According to the Wiki, it adds 25 points to total Stamina for 12 minutes as well as increasing Stamina Regeneration by 2 during that time.

See, that's how I understood it. But then I read things like "vegetable soup is the most overpowered item in the game" and I don't get it.

Typically, when you exhaust your Stamina bar, you have to wait 2-3 seconds for it to start recharging again. Which means that during longer fights, you will be unable to Power Attack or Bash a lot of the time.

But you only need 1 Stamina in order to perform a Power Attack/ Shield Bash, and the regeneration effect of Vegetable Soup means you will always have at least 1 Stamina. Thus, unlimited Power Attacking/ Shield Bashing for its 12m duration. It pretty much makes Stamina and Stamina Regeneration effects completely redundant.

I'm a level 9, and at the Thalmor Embassy.

I just had the drunk guy create a distraction, and the bartender helped me escape the party. I stopped by the chest to get my gear, but my gear is not showing up in my 'inventory', and so I'm repeatedly getting my ass kicked over and over in the court yard, with nothing to fight with.

Anyone else run into this problem?

Edit: I'm in real trouble. While running for my life and trying to find a way out, I ran my life really low and then went through a door, enabling auto save. Now, on the other side of that door, I'm one hit from death and there's 2 guys standing right there. So I die, restart from that door with almost no health, and die within seconds. Of course, I've been saving to the same file, so I cannot backtrack without starting over. Any advice?

Load an autosave file. There should be 3 of them.
