Grinnell College's Jack Taylor scores NCAA record 138 points

Taylor, a 5-10, 170-pound guard from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, shot 52-of-108 from the field, 27-of-71 from 3-point range, and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line to finish with the historic, head-shaking line of 138 points.

The 138 points passed Clarence "Bevo" Francis who held both the NCAA and collegiate scoring mark when he dropped 113 points vs. Hillside in 1954.

Taylor's performance overshadowed a 70-point night for David Larsen of Faith Baptist.

I would be impressed, but what does this say about basketball that one guy is taking 108 shots? This isn't Wilt Chamberlain just being a foot taller than everybody and absolutely dominating his sport. This is just a guy who shot the ball...A LOT.

Living here in Iowa, I heard about this before it exploded. Have a good friend I ride (bicycles) the went there. Great small school with wonderful academics.

Just amazing what this kid did. Sick video game numbers.

Crazy stats for one game and cool accomplishment but watching some of the highlights the team he was playing against is horrible. The defense was a joke. But still cool for this kid that he gets on ESPN and is a national hero for the day.

There is some video on The Big Lead and they literally play no defense. He just stays on the offensive side of half court and waits for his teammates to give him the ball then he jacks a 3. I mean he was still jacking threes when they were up by 70 points. It's not basketball.

And why didn't anyone give the kid a forearm or foul him really hard? You are just going to let a kid stand out there and shoot 71 threes on you?!

The impressive thing here is that a person got 108 shot off in 36 minutes of a supposedly contested basketball game. It really doesn't register with me what that would look like, but it isn't basketball. At least it's not basketball I would want to play or watch.

So yeah, getting up 108 shots certainly merits a little attention, but converting those 108 shots to 138 points isn't particularly impressive to me.

Its impressive and all but two things stand out to me. He shot the ball 108 times and had zero assists. That in my opinon takes away from it

SVP on espnradio is dropping the hammer on this story. Bottom line is this wasn't "real" basketball. From what I understand Grinnell would press hoping for a quick turnover and if they didn't get it, they would basically let the other team shoot a layup almost every time. The whole goal was to get as many possessions for this kid to score even if it meant letting the other team score.

Would you be more impressed by the kid from the other team that put up 70 points while shooting 77% from the field? Of course as I mentioned earlier, almost all his points were off of layups. The other team took 82 shots in the game and 62 of them were layups.

The kid should be commended for being able to even lift his arms high enough to shoot while hoisting 108 shots and respectable 3 point FG %. But 138 points is basically video game stuff.

Its a sham. He only shot 38% from 3 and basically cherry picked the whole game.

And wherever I read that was wrong anyway, none were homeschooled so all had the opportunity to play so no excuses there.

My bad I read that as two different things instead of one. Plus home schooled kids can play sports. My basketball team actually won state my senior year.

P.S. I wasn't attacking you it was just an honest question.

Hmmmm.... most I ever scored was 38, so this guy only has me by a hundred. As to taking 108 shots --- easy and a great pleasure. 100 shots was a light day in the driveway at home before getting called in for dinner. Then when back out for another 100 to digest it.

Shooting around 33% from three-point range is breaking even, compared to 50% from two. You do the math. Of course I [ahem] would have been depressed to only shoot 33% from three.

All comments about this not resembling basketball are of course correct, but such things happen [sort of] in streetball regularly. I recall a summer league game with a former WVU captain on the opponents. I was really p!ssed when my fellow guard allowed him to "get off" early. I told the guy to line up behind me in our zone and I'd go to whatever side the superstar went to, by gum, put a stop to this. Held him to 73 that night.
