Sorry, if anyone doesn't understand that these guys are likely moving on because they aren't moving up at ND (or going to), I think you're blind. Neither Cooks or Alford were going to be promoted while here.

That's not even a bad thing though. If Kelly isn't promoting them, it's for good reason. Each of these guys have their faults. I have consistently said I don't see Alford as a coordinator. He comes off as a fantastic recruiter because he's "real", but he is not a meticulous perfection demanding type. Cooks, while I really liked him and think he may have the mind for it, is not a very vocal guy and he does not come off as a strong leader.

It makes sense that these guys go somewhere else to become more than assistant coordinators because it just won't happen here and for the right reasons. I loved and respected both those guys tremendously and thought they were good coaches, just not really promotion material.

I agree. It's all about moving up and not becoming a stale name in the coaching fraternity. This would've been Alford's 7th (?) season as a position coach at ND. Cooks was going on 6.

Alford just ramped up his résumé by being a coach under Urban Meyer. Now he can recruit a much broader athlete list. He'll have a chance to really be a top 10 recruiter. And, his name becomes hot again working at the hottest school in the country.

Cooks is similar. He can add another big-time program to his résumé and have a chance to recruit a wider array of athletes. He also has a much easier path through Texas.

If you're not being promoted after several years, and the outside job promotions aren't coming your way, it's probably time to take a shot at a lateral move.

If Lafleur is leaving there remains one opening.

I can't argue with the Quinn hiring. I just hope he and Denbrock can coexist.

EDIT: I guess since Quinn is coming in as QB coach he is Lafleur's replacement. Still need a replacement for Alford.

They were on the same staff at Grand Valley State for 7 years.

I know and it's hard to fault TA for that. But anyone calling this a "lateral move" is foolish. The guy will be making a ton more money and got s bump on job title.

Look, I know ND recruited well before TA and they'll recruit fine after. But dammit, I'm tired of this kind of stuff in the off season.

People called it lateral before the assistant head coach title was leaked.

Why isn't Kelly taking care of his own? How hard is it to make Alford Asst. OC? Cooks I get. Is Kelly that arrogant to think he can just plug and recruit? I could see if he was a recruiter like Meyer and Saban but he has not shown the same kind of interest in it. He needs a string recruiting staff. I loved Lyght as a player like everyone by his resume leads something to be desired on the recruiting front.

Yeah but this is a bit of a role reversal. It's probably also going to be hard for Kelly not to treat Quinn as more than just a QB coach and Denbrock is already partially neutered by the fact he doesn't call plays.

I'll be blasted for this, and that's ok, but I'm not enamored with Jeff Quinn coming......no reason why, just a gut feeling.

An offensive coordinator of prolific passing teams seems like a legitimate option for a QB coach. Also adds a layer of redundancy should anything happen to Denbrock or Hiestand. No brainer hire.

IDK anything about Quinn, but yeah, haven't the majority of Irish fans been clamoring for Jeff Quinn to reunite with BK? Wasn't he the offensive 'genius' behind BK's success at Cinci?

If so, shouldn't we be really excited about this? Or are we just concerned that he's a lame ass recruiter?

Quinn>Lafeur on the field I would imagine. If we can get Quinn, Lyght, and Autry Denson for Lafuer, Cooks, and Alford, that's a debatable improvement. I'll take the group with Alford, but if Quinn is all he's cracked up to be, it's not a bad end, is it?

I know Loy is probably throwing something crazy out there but Eddie Gran would be a home-run hire. Plus it would instantly help out our special teams because it's been pure garbage for five years.

Loy said his named has been discussed. His pay is some where's between 305,000 and 350,000. I doubt he drops OC to be an assistant and take a pay cut.

Autry Denson is a strong candidate to replace Alford per II

This is what Alford had to say about Denson in an interview from this afternoon

"If anybody asks my opinion, I would one-hundred-thousand percent endorse Autry," Alford. "Selfishly as somebody who wants somebody to look after his guys, and I shouldn't say 'my guys' anymore, but as somebody who could look after them and coach them, I think he would look after them in that way. He'd be in a position to mentor them. That's the guy. He's the guy. I really think Autry is a special guy. (Heck), I think he's a better recruiter than me. I'd be looking up to him. He's special."

In the interview with II he said that he bawled his eyes out when telling Golson the news. He is doing this to take the next step in his coaching career. It sounds like this has nothing do with money or that he likes OSU more

Names per shitty rivals:

Autry Denson, Chad Scott, Derek Lewis, Charles Huff.

They also add that Alford was the best recruiter in the business and ND cannot replace him.

Certain schhols I could believe that. If this was texas, georgia, Florida I would believe that. But this is OSU were they have 0 class. I hope Meyer make Alford cut some of the scholarships and see the pain in those players eyes. Meyer will do what ever it takes to win right or wrong. So to benefit himself he decided to be part of a great coaching staff that has no morals.

Further more that would be like me as an officer in the fire service preaching sprinkler systems but owning a construction company that won't install them in the buildings we build.

I'm not drunk, and I absolutely feel this way.....I understand Coach Alford wanting to move up the ladder and someday be a HC, however, going to coach for a lying POS, like Urban makes me lose most of the respect I had for Alford. Basically looks like selling his soul to get a head in life. That may sound like sour grapes, but there are other opportunities that he could've taken.

1. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being drunk if you are. Id guess 20% of the board is right now, and that percentage triples in 3 hours.

2. Lots of people take jobs that may not fit their personal beliefs/morals if it is a gateway to their ultimate goal. Let's not get too dramatic here, he's not going to Columbus to sell crack or abduct children.

I have asked this before a few times but what did LaFleur actually do on this staff anyway last year. I still cannot recall even hearing much about him recruiting wise. There were times during the season when I legitimately had to remind myself he was on the staff.

Also, I can't honestly say I saw anything worth mentioning regarding him last season.

Taught Golson that he should hold onto the ball, miss easy reads, and force throws.
