Absolutely pathetic performance. Constantly playing soft coverage giving up more easy 3rd downs than I care to count. Zero push up front. Defensive backs with no idea how to play the ball. Your offense scored 28 points which should be enough to at least keep you in the game, but this game never even felt within striking distance. BVG needs to be replaced with someone that can run a college system that can maximize our athleticism rather than restrict it. You shouldn't be forced to keep superior athletes on the sidelines in favor of walk ons because your system is too complex to grasp.

Please Kelly fire BVG!

The defense sucks but they did about as well as they could have in the second half

You realize they were without 7 defensive starters today, right? Let's cut off 7 of your fingers and see how well you enjoy jerking yourself silly.

As opposed to all the awesome defensive performances he usually turns out?

Come on, this has to be the worst analogy ever.

Ok he lost 7 starters. What happened to next man up? Why aren't we developing our backups and getting them ready to play. I understand they will not be as good as the starters but this injury excuse that everyone keeps using is getting old. We did pretty will with our 3rd string QB this season.

Then why does he continually drop Okwara and Rochelle into coverage with antiquated zone blitzes? Why does he continually blitz JS who can't get there? HE DOES NOT ADJUST HIS SCHEME FOR ANY REASON OR PUTTHESE KIDS IN POSITION TO SUCCEED. they would have been better off sitting in cover 2 and 3 and man blitzing when appropriate.

I watched as a large man dropped into coverage. I thought to myself, "Damn! That LB needs to lose weight!" Then I realized it was Isaac Rochelle. Later, there was an OSU WR completely wide open, which I was, not stunned obviously, since this is ND, but somewhat curious about; then I realized that Okwara was responsible for covering him. Did Derek Mason get fired from Vandy yet? We should try to pick him up. I'm not exactly jumping up and down at the prospect of a LB who hasn't played all year suddenly becoming VanGorder's new QB of the defense.

I'm not defending him, nor do I know for sure; but one possible answer is that it forces the Opponent to keep a back in the backfield to block. That might keep them from going with 5 WRs, which might keep one of his cover guys from getting completely exposed.

Perhaps all BVG needs is a thumb and pointer finger, but prefers to it shake it up too much with exotic finger combos...

Let's list the problems we have on defense:

--Can't stop the run
--Can't get 3rd down stops
--Can't get pressure without blitzing
--Secondary can't hold up when blitzing
--Our blitzes don't get sacks
--Can't tackle in space
--Can't stop the big play
--Can't make stops in the red zone
--Doesn't force many turnovers

Did I miss anything?

Some food for thought as this was our defensive rankings before the bowl game.

36th in total defense

99th in turnover margin

27th in passing yards allowed

64th in rushing defense

17th in 3rd down defensive percentage

22nd in red zone defense

58th in tackles for loss

Tied for 77th in sacks

Didn’t even register for defensive TD’s because we had less than 2

Injuries as an excuse is a cop out. We've recruited very well, the "next man in" is more than capable. BVG and his coaches should have those players ready, physically and mentally to play.

Seems like they aren't ready for the scheme, or on their fundamentals.

Not enough nasty.

Can't recruit many of the types of players we need on Defense.

For some reason ND seems to make kids soft in the long run.

BVG is the college equivalent to Rob Ryan. All you hear about is how great and complicated his schemes are yet the results are rarely there.

All the sudden next year, Morgan will be one of our best defenders like it came out of nowhere. BVG will get credit for clicking the switch that made the lightbulb go off for Morgan. I am confident that our D would have been better with Morgan than Schmidt, but BVG stuck with his boy. It's a damn shame he didn't get that kid some more game experience this year. BVG's biggest issue is putting the best players on the field because he thinks it his defensive expertise is what makes the unit effective. I would always err on the side of talent over scheme. His job as the coach is to add knowledge to that talent. The fact that he did not succeed at getting Morgan on the field is a pretty obvious coaching failure. I doubt he will get fired because he and Kelly have been friends and colleagues for years and Kelly might have had a lot to do with Schmidt never leaving the field, too. BVG is his guy and he will stick with him.

Manti Teo was soft?

Harrison Smith was soft?

Stephon Tuitt was soft?

Sheldon Day is soft?

No more excuses......BVG sucks!

No more excuses......BVG sucks!

I think this plus the fact that enough Joe was enough might be the subject that ND nation can agree on more than anything else. The injuries were a decent excuse last year as we played a lot of freshman. Not this year as we are playing guys who have experience or expected to be good if not great. The players are doing what they are coached to do (not playing the ball etc. hence the absence of an average number of turnovers).
