This is what happens when you don’t hire outside your coaching tree. Freeman could have found someone that was a DC within the last decade. What happened to “challenge everything”?

Ash never coached with Marcus before. He didn't coach for Tressel either. He was a Bret Bielema and Urban Meyer guy who coached with Fickell for 2 years. He was recommended by Meyer, likely after Marcus' agent (who is also Ash's agent) threw his name out there.
