Not for the Tar Heels. Here's their DFEI for each year since Mack Brown's return:

This is not a talented defense that just needs time to gel in order to get right. Looking back over the last decade, the best they've managed is "average," with several dips into the bottom quintile of the FBS. They've gotten worse every year under Brown.

If we lose, it'll only be because we repeatedly punched ourselves in the dick with offensive ineptitude and our defense couldn't pitch a shutout.
I hope you’re correct but every preview I read mentioned they were loaded w/ 4-5 stars. Jamie U’s was a free preview and he stated as much. I remember they played that true frosh CB who graduated HS early to be eligible vs ND a year or two ago & he looked good right off the hoof. Shit I hope you’re right b/c they’re getting all their offensive skill guys back. Downs supposedly had a knee sprain so that could be debilitating for a WR that is forced to cut a lot. He ate us up last season.

Talent has really never been UNC's problem. They always have talented guys. But their defense has been pretty lousy.

This is the Drew Pyne we need to see this weekend.

The knee jerk reactions (the tweet, not necessarily you, irishff) to ND's game plan and Pyne's play really crack me up. Did no one listen to Rees' press conference last week? Anyone read a Cal preview article? Cal's defense was literally a bend, don't break, prevent the big play over the top mentality, which is their bread and butter. They play with two deep safeties on just about every play.

I'm not defending Rees this season or saying our offense was lights out but Pyne showed poise and patience taking what the defense gave him all day long, which is tough to do for a QB. You get the itch to go for the big play and that can be a mistake. If the defense is preventing us from taking shots deep, take what they're giving you, and we did, scored 24 points, and got the win. It's not as simple as "WhY aReN't ThEy ThRoWiNg It DeEp?! TaKe A sHoT!" This isn't NCAA 14. There are two schemes, and it's a chess match. We beat them with pawns.

Cal wanted to do what OSU and Marshall both did, which is take away the run game (it worked for one half) and prevent the big play. And we still won, with greatly improved OL play in the 2nd half and diligent execution in the passing game. And Rees did a nice job with those RB passes, nice wrinkles off of the action that was helping us move the ball (RPOs, quick passes to the flats). The TD pass to Tyree specifically was a work of art.

I think we see that kid. He's got some moxie and the "first game starter looking for the 1st win" jitters should be behind him.

This is where I insert Ulukinatme's Pyne strutting gif.

GSU ran for 235 against UNC. Think this is going to be the big break out game for the offensive line which should allow us to control the clock / limit UNC possessions.

Very cliche to say this but I think this game will be won or lost early on the offensive and defensive lines. If ND can generate a ground game and the defensive line can make life difficult on the UNC offense, early in the game, then I think ND has a really good shot to win.

Yeah, I'm getting more and more confident as the week goes on.

UNC has the #5 offense in the country, but the defenses they've played haven't been very good. Total defense rankings:
  • App St: 72
  • GSU: 106
  • Florida A&M: N/A
Meanwhile, ND's total defense ranks only 59th, but look at the offenses we've played:
  • OSU: 1
  • Marshall: 15
  • Cal: 94 (If we got home on their QB this game would've looked a lot nicer. Have to make sure we contain Maye first and foremost).

Even better, look at UNC's total defensive ranking (123!) against the following total offense rankings:
  • App St: 39
  • GA St 52
  • Florida A&M - N/A
Meanwhile, ND's opponents total defense rankings:
  • OSU: 21
  • Marshall: 23
  • Cal: 44
TL;DR - We've obviously had a much tougher slate than UNC up to this point and are more battle tested. Vegas seems to agree, with it basically being a Pick-em with UNC -1.5 at home.

He was out of space in his storage, so I asked Zack Morris to record it for me.

In truth that was the only footage I could find online of Pyne's McGregor walk, no idea why they decided to use such a small resolution.
