I have a Journalism degree. Publishing articles that contain an incorrect statistic is never acceptable. I tried to find a quick way to message Mr Arnold about it, but I didn't want to take the time to create a profile.

He is very knowledgeable and a good writer, but hastily written work is not an excuse.

EDIT: boricua, you rub people the wrong way because every one of your posts has a condescending, negative tone to it. You'd think we were 0-2 and got steamrolled both games by the way you post. Try to mix in a little optimism and recognition of the positives about our team. What's the point of following the team and the sport as a whole if you get no joy out of it?

Bullshit. They have a negative condescending tone by design after someone acts like a dick. The original post in this thread that I wrote only disagreed with the idea that ND was a top 10 defense and said why I disagreed and was not condescending in any way. It's the assumptions that follow(which you are also making right now) about my negative beliefs about the whole team, program, whatever that are the issue. I even said in the original post that the D was legit good. You won't find me in a game day thread or anytime for that matter, posting a sky is falling post or that the coaches are morons, et al. I do get plenty of joy out of watching ND, but is the point of being on a message board to generally make positive statements or to try and balance the perception of what other people feel you are saying? It seems ridiculous. People are looking way too deeply into these things and respond by being rude. I don't feel like not responding back and I doubt others would either.

Not sure why you are trying to start ****. I simply pointed out that Keith Arnold was wrong (he was). He listed 3rd down defense as a concern coming out of the Purdue game when a 10-second glance at the statistics shows that it was actually a strength.

I'm not trying to start ****, I just don't like being attacked for pointing out a blatant error.

If you are Keith's boyfriend/girlfriend, my apologies.

Go Irish!

EDIT: <NBI>, you rub people the wrong way because every one of your posts has a condescending, negative tone to it . . .

I sent this as a private message. But then I re-read it. And I had to post it. Maybe all Keith had to add was "when it counted." On three drives the defense gave up every third and forth down. And those were Purdue's scoring drive. So his point was valid above and beyond your smart statistical analysis.

Next point: I like having Keith post here. I like having other high powered and inside posters here. I would hate to lose any of them over two ill mannered new posters. Now I am being really gentile for my good old bad old self. And I would like to offer this as a word to the wise. When I see ten plus posters griving a new posters slash, negative reps are not far behind.

Just if you are interested.

Self-righteousness doesn't always play so well.

burger23 at One Foot Down does a tremendous job of breaking down the Purdue game schematically here.

So you can see that it's not like Kelly and Martin did nothing to counteract the Purdue defense. They tried a couple different things and managed to pick up yards even with the offensive line struggling.

The problem is, they didn't do them enough. Why the Irish didn't keep using play-action and motion to try and loosen up the congested Purdue defense is beyond me. They worked when they used them, but they didn't go back to them.

I'll cut the coaches a little bit of slack because Kelly can only call the plays Golson is comfortable running, but I find it hard to believe there's only two or three play-action plays Golson knows.

Combine the unimaginative play-calling with the struggling offensive line, and it made for a long day on offense. It's not that Golson played poorly, but I think Kelly could have done more to help him out.

This isn't the end of the world and if there was ever a game for Golson and Kelly to struggle, at least it was in a winnable game. It's unfortunate we have to talk about Kelly "struggling" as a playcaller with a quarterback he recruited in Year Three, but here we are. Let's just cross our fingers and hope everything gets better.

Five games into the season and technically Purude is in first place in the leaders division of the B1G. Granted they are 0-0 and haven't played a conference game yet. But everyone in their division that is eligible (OSU & Penn St aren't) already have one loss. Next week's Michigan vs. Purdue game will be interesting.

If Purdue beats Michigan next week, the Wolverines could conceivably finish 6-6 with Michigan State, Nebraska, and Ohio State still on the schedule.

Just saw it was on. Flipped to it a few times during commercials for Army/Navy. WOW has our offense become more efficient.

I wish I could share your optimism. I think they are definitely legit good and well coached but I think you have to be able to generate a lot more pass rush than ND does to be top 10. I think they are bordering the top 20 with the ability to go higher, but they can't generate much pass rush and the talent they have should allow them to. It's just Diaco's scheme is not getting it done that well in that particular area.

Hmmmmm. Hindsight

I've told a few friends that I think Notre Dame starts the season 1-1. I favor them getting beat more by Navy than Purdue but I'd bet $$$ that my beloved Irish lose one of these first 2 games. Bigger question is how is the fan base going to react. This is not a strong program anymore. Call me negative Nacy or whatever but a realistic view of this football program is much needed. Then maybe the administration will have to decide what they want to do. Its not the coach its what they make the coach play with and right now Notre Dame is second tier. They need players.

Thank you for your realistic view...
