Hope

A W is a W! This team will learn from yesterday's hard fought win! Congrats to all those kids who fought, especially to Rees for being more of and adult than many of our fans!

On a side note I would be calling for Danny Hope's if I was a Purdue fan! As an ND fan I thank him for his two QB system and for not just going with Marve!!

I've been meaning to post this same exact thing.

Did Coach address why he didn't use GAIII yesterday? Was he injured? That was odd and it appeared to be the plan, not as the result of Purdue stuffing the run.

My thoughts:
Surprised ND didn't try to run between the tackles a little more even against a stacked box. BK said at the presser that they weren't going to be able to do it, so it was like they were 't going to even try.

Golson played pretty well IMO overall. I can think of at least a half dozen plays (and probably 3 or 4 on the first TD drive including his run) where he extended a play that if TR was in would've been a sack or poor play/decision. I have no issue with BK emphatically reasserting that he is the starter.

Being at the game, I noticed a lot of fans who clearly could not understand how the offense was setup to operate as they continually screamed for Golson to snap the ball while he was getting the play call from the sideline. I even explained that to the guy sitting behind me and he said "I know", yet continued to yell at Golson, so go figure.

I came to the realization that Purdue's defense was actually pretty good, especially the d line. This was also a game where it would've been nice to have Cierre.

Sorry if this or any of these points have been discussed, but on the last drive, BK did say in the presser that he put TR in b/c Golson was having trouble gripping the ball and because he felt a little more comfortable with TR in the 2 minute drill. I would agree that that is probably the only area where he currently has an advantage over Golson.

NDs defense played well. The secondary played good overall with no super huge breakdowns.

ND won the turnover battle for the second straight game.

Hopefully KLMs injury doesn't keep him out long, he is clearly missed.

Hopeful that Neal will get a block or 2 on a punt return so he can show what he is capable of.

The plays coming in late is on BK. The team was in a LOOK tempo which means they get set at the line and then LOOK at the sideline for a play that is based off what the defense is giving them. The problem is BK or whoever is relaying things from the box to BK have to decide quicker and get the play in.

I think Golson played really well at QB, he made some mistakes but no INT's is wonderful!. The fumble happens but that is just ball security, he will get better with that. I know he is a little hesitant to make some throws but eventually he will throw the ball up for Tyler and let him go get it.

Overall, a Win is a Win. Glad to see Tommy silence those Boobirds and win the game. He truly is better suited to run the 2 minute than EG at this time. Good win against a good opponent. I will be very surprised if Purdon't doesn't win at least 8 games this year!

Go Irish!!!

I totally agree with that player. Tommy deserves a lot of credit that not many fans are going to give him. He won this game for us.

You Damn right he does. Everyone knows i am not his biggest supporter. He came off the bench made good decision and got us in to FG range. This win could be the biggest win Rees has had here at ND. And the coaches made a great call by putting in recivers that he was comfortable with in the game.

I agree to a certain extent, but I do think that the plays getting in, or rather getting the play checks in, was hindered by the refs standing over the ball a bit too long yesterday, which prevented everybody from lining up and allowing ND to get a look at the defense. That being said (and I don't want to add to any negativity because I'm happy with a W and think that a lot of ND "fans" need to get the stick out of their @$$es) I wonder why BK continues to stick with this system of getting the play calls in.

For the past few years, it seems that we burn nearly all of our timeouts due to miscommunication and confusion with the play calls. I know this isn't entirely unique to ND and a bit of that is to be expected, particularly with young quarterbacks, but is this method so central to his system that he can't figure out ways around it? This isn't unique to Golson either, I remember this happening quite a few times last year with Rees as well. Obviously, having a few timeouts remaining near the end of the game would be far preferable, yesterday being a prime example, so I always end up wondering whether the advantages of using BK's current method outweigh the benefits of being able to get a play call in earlier.

Note: once again, this is not meant to be a negative rant, I've seen far too many of those since yesterday. I'm genuinely curious to see if anybody with greater football knowledge than myself (probably many) can help me understand this.

This is what I don't get as well.

There are two major things that clearly aren't working-getting the offense into a rhythm with playcalling, and blocking worth a damn on punt returns.

As to the playcalling, I remember at one point with Rees we were using picturecards. What happened to that? Even with Golson's lack of experience, it simply shouldn't take so long to figure out what we want to do and execute it!

On punt returns, I watched players stand while Purdue players ran past them, continue to stand a little longer, then turn around and give chase. It simply cannot be that hard to teach blocking on punt returns, right? We may as well try to block every punt because we make no effort to block for our return man.

He wasn't hurt because he returned at least 1 kick which he straight up threw a kid to the ground (last possession of the game)

Kelly is so afraid of a fake punt ( I seem to remember that ND got burned on a fake punt in year one or two of his regime or it could be from the MSU fake field goal two years ago) that he leave the defense on the field guarding against this possibility. That is why you see the players not block and hesitate the way they do.

What will be interesting will be how the offensive line plays against MSU. Either they are not as good as many individuals believe or Purdue has a really really good defensive line.

Addressed it in the post-game interview...not enough carries to go around and felt more comfortable with Theo and pass protection.

We won and Golson played well and then got hurt.
Where the hell is Davonte Neal and GAIII? I would have loved to see more of them.

Just because you're fast and/or athletic doesn't mean you should see the field. You have to know what you are doing first.

I was wondering the same thing late to the party; Wood is the best pass blocker, Theo is second. I don't have any idea on Cam, and I think I remember hearing negatives about GAIII, at least until very recently. I am not sure he has a tight grasp on it yet.

your reasoning definitely sounds logical, but Kelly needs to get pass that... 4th and 10 from their own 25, block the runners and get some good yardage! I doubt they will fake from that spot. 4th and 1 from the 50 yard line... ya, maybe you could play more conservatively.

If i remember correctly it seems like they punted alot in the 2nd situation (the ones were a fake is more likely). But In general I agree. Can anyone back me up on that (I may be totally wrong- it is hard to get all the info while at the game)

Kelly said he wanted Councell to get a look at his duties from the sidelines

No joke, i know what you are thinking, and I agree.... kind of a dumb reason to be honest.

Just a hunch, but I'm thinking Kelly knows more about Councell's progression than we do. Fox played pretty well post-adjustments, and knew what we was doing. It's pointless to trot out a better athlete if he doesn't know what he's doing. That's how you get Ishaq Williams 2011. And remember, this is DOG, you have to be very knowledgeable first and foremost.

The Good
Stephon Tuitt. That’s four sacks through two outings for the 6-foot-6, 305-pound sophomore. Tuitt matched Purdue’s All-American candidate Kawann Short with four tackles and two sacks, and continued his assault on offensive lines. With Kapron Lewis-Moore on the sidelines for most of the game, Tuitt carried the load at defensive end.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned...But, for all you guys wondering why GA wasn't in the game the second half was because he can't pass protect! They were throwing 8 man fronts, Kelly went to the passing game and GA can't pass protect yet in his career. This is his first year as a RB guys.

Great work, agree with you about the ugly. What about another good. Seacláid na hÉireann, (Chocolate) had two knocked down passes. On one of them the receiver was wide open.
