I don't understand how people can say we're an athletic team. Relative to what? The middle of the big ten?

The two semi-decent teams (who are way overrated) we've played have looked more athletic than us, and they're not even the pick of the liter. Put Michigan/Oklahoma against OSU, LSU, Alabama, Oregon, Baylor and they'd get ran off of the field. Hell, even Texas is running circles around Oklahoma and Texas is bad this year.

Not much more than this year, but we had the best MLB in the country and a hell of a DL, not to mention a QB that could make plays. Watching the Texas/Oklahoma game, Texas is the better team and it's not even close. They literally have twice as many yards as Oklahoma, and that's with a special teams touchdown. Texas would thump us right now. Texas has suffocated Oklahoma in every aspect of football. That kind of puts our roster in perspective.

At what positions? I want to say it's a wash at quarterback but I haven't seen McCoy run.

Please tell me where we are athletic?

QB- Texas
RB- Texas by a mile
WR- Texas by a mile
TE- ND
OL- ND
DL-ND
LB- Texas with a healthy Jordan Hicks. Besides Jaylon Smith we are soft there this year. I forgot prince shembo was on the team till he had 3 sacks a week ago.
DB- Texas has 4 guys that will play on Sundays
Special teams- Texas look at what Daje Johnson did.

Texas just has more team speed and athleticism then us. I'd like to hear your opinion on this as well.

Well then who gives a $hit if we're athletic or not, since we showed everyone that you can still go undefeated with not much athleticism

I think we are athletic at quite a few positions...

QB is a wash at best

I also think WR is a wash. TJ would arguably be the best receiver on the field. And I guess it matters which DaVaris Daniels decides to show up

The NC game showed everyone with a TV that we needed much better athletes.

Is Texas faster than us at most positions on D? Yes. But why? Could it have anything to do with the way each team recruits?

Texas gives up almost 200 yards rushing a game. They got their doors blown off by both BYU and Ole Miss. They are highly susceptible to giving up huge amounts on the ground, because they are smaller and faster and not built to handle teams running right at them power wise?

Notre Dame has been stuffing running games for two years now. We struggle in certain areas (LBs and S in coverage specifically) but, that is because we have recruited to a different philosophy. We are physically bigger, built to beat teams that try and pound against us like Michigan State and Stanford.

I don't understand people throwing blanket statements around and using a certain fact set to be an end all be all in an argument. There are different ways to skin a cat, and both can win football games.

I thought it showed us that we needed to be bigger and more depth. Other than that receiver and Yeldon, they won't run past you, they will just run you over

I agree with most of this, but I think the staff realizes that the current MLB recruit won't cut it and they're going after smaller, more athletic people (Deeb can run, Tranquill). And they've also gone balls to the wall with elite safeties dating back to Shaq Thompson, but it hasn't worked out until Redfield. They're addressing the areas that are currently killing us, but it's not on the field yet.

FWIW, Texas will give up less rushing yards to Oklahoma that we did.

Agreed. I was gonna bring this up next. All those Texas athletes on defense couldn't stop a bloody nose and has looked like swiss cheese in 5 of their 6 games

I think Shumate and Nicky will be good safeties for us

Easy to do when playing from ahead the whole game, no?

On the MLB part, I agree completely. I think the reason Deeb was a late offer was because the staff was initially probably going to pass until his senior year he showed much more quickness and explosiveness than anytime before. The kid can move. I also love the offer of Drue for MLB. He is a stud.

I love taking HS safeties with big frames and making them our 3-4 MLBs, especially on the WILL side. Hope we continue to recruit that way.

Shumate and Redfield will be starting next year IMO. And to be fair to Shumate it's his first year playing safety

Shumate is a phenomenal athlete. When he learns the position well, he'll be a stud, and he's learning the position now. Harrison Smith was pretty terrible until his senior year - Shumate will be at his (senior year) level by Junior year.

Case McCoy is just as good as Rees. Texas athletically is the difference IMO. We might have better coaches but we don't have the athletes back there. We need to hit Texas harder and we seem to be doing that in 2015.

I don't know man. Take out these 3 interceptions, we probably win that game...Different day, different game. These guys are not machine. They have good and bad days like everyone...

Isn't our D more designed to stop the run than a quick passing attack? Linebackers that are big enough to stop the run and fast enough to cover receivers don't grow on trees! The Big 12(-2) is a pass happy conference so they need smaller, quicker LBs as opposed to the run stuffers we have. So yes, the LBs may be quicker than ours but they aren't the same type of player! Apples and oranges!

Playing down two scores within the first ~3 minutes is how OU beat us. Perhaps if we'd stick to running the ball it would've been a different outcome but we came out and proceeded to shoot ourselves.

Big Game Bob should worry about his defense and not the defenses in the SEC. His got punched in the mouth today by an average Texas team. LMAO

Should be a interesting game between them and Baylor.

Yeah I agree. Don't really know about Baylor as their competition thus far has been less than impressive. Their performance today against K State has not been impressive either.
