I was saying all game, if Virginia just shuts down Brown and Fuller, we're toast. It was so clear that we only went to those two for majority of the game. I get it and obviously it's easier said than done to shut those guys down but we are way too easy to read. We need to add the TE more and pass to the RB more. Obviously what we did worked but I am not convinced that it will work all year.

I believe this to be a good problem. Virginia could not shut them down. If they were able to, we may have seen more of Robinson, Amir, and possibly Prosise out of the backfield. Brown and Fuller were more than likely first and second reads and were available.

Great work. Some of those inside veers actually looked like outside veers to me, but I guess with them being in trips and running to the weak side you have to veer the DE and option the OLB. Very hard to defend.

Skov looks like a hoss does he not? ND has gotta take away with FB dive with somebody (Morgan?) and then let Jaylon do work disrupting the pitch/outside toss.

Im just hoping to God ND runs with a single high safety with Butler and Luke as Corners and KVR/Farley/Schu/Tranquill working as nickel/dime backs. Gonna need a lot of speed on the edges.

*When you guys watch the GT tape watch out for what their Center does on almost every running play he ignores the DL and LB's and immediately sprints up field 20 yards or more to take on the safeties.

As much as we want to see him, this is probably the one game we're least likely to see him.

Watch this kids reaction to the rush, his ability to keep his feet moving, avoid two d-linemen on his front, adjust, then put the ball 50 yards away to only where Fuller can get it...

Any chance we see Rochell play on the interior a bunch this week? I know penetrating with the DTs seems to be one thing that kills a triple option attack, and I think Day/Rochell could do some serious damage together.

Of course our lack of DE depth might make that impossible, but I hope it's something the coaches consider.
Expect him to drop in to coverage.

Is Hayes suddenly not good? Where is he these days?

Skov is a horse! We definitely can't let him gash us up the middle or it's over. The key will be on our d-tackles being able to fight off one on on blocks with the guards to slow him down and having an MLB finish him off.

I watched that center too! He sprints off the line to not just the 2nd level but the 3rd! Very impressive.

The play that scares me (always has) is the counter option. Hopefully our LBs are being drilled with reading the right keys (downblocks and pulls) and not the action in the backfield.

Asking a true freshman TE to come in and learn correct blocking assignments is tough. I am sure as his knowledge progresses his skill set will increase as well. He has the physical skills necessary... just needs to get the mental side down. I have confidence that he will as the season moves forward. Reminds me of OJ Howard a lot and it has taken OJ two years plus to figure blocking out.

What I am hearing is that Jones will continue to be an oversized WR and not a true TE for some time. From what I have seen in the games, he was whiffing on blocks a lot, to the point I thought a lot of WRs would at least put a body on someone and get in the way. Not conducive to a dominating run game.

If the kid can just get a solid 'chip' on the rusher and run an out route, that would be helpful in passing plays. If it is a designed run play, put his butt in motion and sweep-run behind him for another deviation or chip block. There are many ways to acclimate him into being a better blocker. Agreed that he is not a true run-blocker.

Completely whiffing is devastating to the offense though. I had the feeling it was a contributing factor to stalled drives. Aren't we better splitting more WRs, forcing nickel/dime coverage and let the OL do work with better numbers? Hell, put a six OL in Stanford style if that is what it takes. I'm not comfortable with our TEs now that Smythe is out. As much as I like Lautua blocking, is he really any better than a 6th OL?

IMO, makes no sense to red shirt Hayes. He played well last year and I think he'll end up being needed, so why not use him now and get more out of him than from game 8 and on?.

So I'm not sold that there's not something going on behind the scenes because I think it's very likely that he has to play this year and the coaches know that.

Possibly..

Prosise will be the factor in this game IMO - not Kizer. I do not think that TE play will be the primary factor in this game against GT although it would be helpful. the Irish offense will HAVE to have time on the field to give the defense a rest against the trip-option. I am hoping to see the jet-sweep work, prosise making solid decisions and runs up the middle.

We have an Arby's offensive line - utilize it!!!!!

WE HAVE THE MEATS

Checked out a GT board to see what they're thinking. You would've thought they were coming off back-to-back championships. They are a very confident fan base, to say the least.

so the base defense
DE - 6-5 286 JR(RS)
DE 6-1 236 SO
NT 6-3 298 SR (RS)
DT 6-5 282 SR
LB 6-4 235 SR (RS)
LB 5-11 218 JR
LB 6-1 231 JR (RS)
S 6-0 193 SR (RS)
S 6-0 191 SR (RS)
CB 5-11 188 SR
CB 5-11 190 SR (RS)

DL Backups - two non-frosh are over 250 pounds - no clue how much they play but Gamble is a 286 lb Junior NT (6-5 seems tall for that position). Kallon is a 6-5 296 lb RS Junior (one of the very few 4 star recruits on the roster).

Four guys under 200 pounds on the back end of the D, a 218 pound LB under 6 feet tall.

maybe the Frosh/Soph can contribute but 2015 class had ZERO 4 or 5 star recruits. 2014 had a four star DB, 2 four star players in 2012 and the sole 2011 four star was a 228 pound LB now starting at NT 70 pounds heavier.

Is it me or is this team just asking for us to pound the ball down their throat? On paper we should start big, stay big and pound the ground.

You would think, with Kizer making his first start and with the success we've had running the ball and with the significant size advantage and with the machine that is the GT offense the goal is pretty damned simple... run the rock and move the clock...

so,...

obviously,...

BK will demand we throw the ball 50 times...

I don't see the value of Luatua/Jones two TE sets, what is the difference between that and going wide with another WR if Jones is a liability blocking? If you are saying get big and pound then put our backup tackle(s) in. Biven or Bars out there gets me more excited than Luatua and Jones. Pure dreaming b/c I don't think this is in any of our coaches' DNA.

Well let’s look at this from a ‘Stats’ view that GT has played this year:
Tulane has lost 47 straight games against AP-ranked opponents, tied for the 3rd-longest streak in poll history. The last time that the Green Wave beat a Top-25 team was in 1984 ... against Vanderbilt!
Tulane had 2 pivotal turn-overs in the game
Tulane rushed for 248 yards against the GT line.
Alcorn St. had 3 turn-overs
Alcorn St. averaged 4.3 yards a rush.
Alcorn St. is FCS team.

The good news is that if Kelly is calling from a playbook with fewer passes, we should see more runs and make use of our most potent weapons: OL and RB. I know the OL had a tough time helping us pick 4th and short situations but I have faith we get that fixed for this game. Rarely do we see Hiestand's line play poorly twice (and that's not entirely fair given we still rushed for over 250 yards, I believe).

Up to this point we've averaged 43 rush attempts/game and 5.43 yards per rush. That's a pretty damn good average. Things may change with Zaire out but I'm certain they have enough to use to continue that trend.
