Sandy Hook Shooting

First I like your PM saying you didn't want to debate directly after you started debating my comments.

Do you need more? I can cite several multiple shootings where fewer were killed than injured. Do you also know about the worse massacre in our country's history involving a school? 1927. Man used home made bombs to kill 54. Nearly a hundred years ago and he didn't use guns.

Is anything being done for your country's alcohol related injuries/deaths? Plenty of people will accept those numbers but never think twice about banning alcohol.

People should be realistic. The crazies that do these attacks are aiming for places that do not have guns. If guns are the problem, why aren't more people in gun stores murdered? Nearly 100% of people in gun stores own guns. Because there are so many guns we are to assume that there would be a lot of murder too correct?

I didn't PM you anything. Your comments make no sense at all, frankly it's impossible to "debate" with people whose minds are so closed as to think that guns don't increase the likelihood for violence.

What you're proposing is a return to wild west style justice, a sort of mutually assured destruction on a personal level. It doesn't work, and it creates a culture of violence in the aim of self defence.

The United States has more guns than any other civilized country, and more murders. If guns don't kill people but rather people kill people, does that just mean the US is more ****ed up than any other civilized country in the world?

You're proving my point - nine attacks, 90 injured and 21 killed. The odds of anyone dying are infinitely lower in knife attacks. What would have happened in the Batman mass shooting if he'd had a knife? In the Gabby Giffords attack? The Fort Hood Massacre?

The murder rate in the US is worse than the following countries: Sri Lanka, Palestine, Libya, Afghanistan, Niger, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and about fifty other third world countries.

How is this confusing?

I believe it was box cutters on 9/11.
I had a great World History teacher in high school. One of those teachers who can just explain it to you.
Had a very good discussion 1 day that sticks out to me because of the lesson learned that day.
He asked us if Hitler was in a room full of people with a pistol with 1 bullet. Who would attack him?
The human race has an extremely high sense of self preservation and while there is no stronger cry to arms than a child in danger. Children are also our weakest point.
Let's not blame guns let's blame this standard response of instead of just committing suicide I have to go out in a big way so people remember me.

Probably doesn't read how I want it to hopefully you guys understand.

Sorry... I will withdraw that statement. And will be done with that discussion. We all have our opinions and I plan on sticking to mine. I like being realistic.

Seriously. Now his name will be associated with this tragedy forever. It'll be the first thing to pop up in a google search for him.

He oughta sue each broadcaster who reported it and then change his name.

agreed...sometimes I think just the loss of anonymity is damage enough...don't you think? This guy is now "notorious", even though he seems to have done nothing but share DNA with a lost soul.

Time for these outlets to get the checkbooks out as that is the only thing that seems to get their attention...

Seems that he had his brother's ID on him though. It was the information released to the press. Horrible misunderstanding, but not necessarily the press' fault.

I'm unbelievably saddened . Those poor children along with the adult victims and their families. This sh!t has to stop. I'm so done with the stupid gun law debate. Something needs to be done right fcking now. Our constitution wasn't written with assault rifles and semi auto hand guns with 30 round clips in mind. God what is this world coming to?

They always have a logical reason WHY they got it worng....but never stand up to the repercusions of getting it wrong.

...see, I think there was a time when the fact that he carried his bro's ID would have caused questions, and a frantic search for corroboration of a single source of info.

It'd be one thing if you or I tweeted it as lay people. However, these are news outlets who were...at one time...trained to do business a certain way.

Anymore they get a "pass" as if the standard of care is no longer different for the press than for you or I.

I don't accept that...

There was a similar attack at a school in China today - with a knife. 22 people were injured. Knife attack at Chinese school wounds 22 children - CNN.com

I am so sick of people saying guns don't kill people. Sure it's the moron's fault who did it, but without a gun they can't do this kind of damage. What is it going to take for people to realize that guns are the problem? We can never get rid of the lunatics, mental illness and other problems can never simply be eliminated. We can, however, prevent them from having the tools to engage in these kinds of disasters.

Can we?

If there ever was a justifiable need for prayer pics, this would be the thread for it.

Sick to my stomach. God bless them all.

How do you write an obituary for a 5 year old? Or 20 of them?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Newtown, Ct., the families affected by this senseless act of cruelty, and the innocent victims.

I'm a school administrator. Spent a few years as a middle school principal before moving into a central office position. I will tell you that there a lots of issues that keep good school admins up at night - your mind races nearly 24/7. But chief among them are issues of student safety just like this. It's everyone's worst nightmare, for obvious reasons, and it's the one thing you don't want to be unprepared for but you know you can never completely prepare for. My heart goes out to every single person affected by this senseless tragedy.

James Champion is the brother Mrs Lanza is a high ranked police officer. Imagine what he know and has to go through. This sick feeling never goes away.

All children that were killed were from the age of 6-7

So I just got back from the park with my toddler. Great sunset over the beach, it was pretty fun.

While we were there I noticed two brothers play wrestling. I noticed the older kid was grabbing the younger one by the back of his sweatshirt and holding a toy pistol (looked surprisingly real) to the younger kid's head like he was holding him hostage while his dad was trying to get them to go home. It was actually really violent and the older kid was throwing him down and dragging him by the hood of his sweatshirt all the while holding the toy gun to his head. The kids were between 4 and 6.

I don't want to pass judgement on the parents or anything. I definitely got a sick feeling in my stomach when I saw it though. What are your thoughts on this?

If this is a bad thread for this question, mods feel free to move it.

So you would advocate car control? Automobiles kill more people than firearms. Take away the automobiles, and these people would still be alive. BAN THE SEDAN!!

Cost-benefit analysis, is your constitutional right to bear arms (which was to form a militia but whatever) worth the price?

Let's just take all the guns away from the law abiding citizens so we are absolutely defenseless against all the criminals and lunatics that are obviously going to obey the new gun control laws... AAAhhhh yes Utopia!!!!!

There is no right answer... This problem is more about our society as a whole then guns...

The only problem i see with comparing Canada to US is the population... comparing 34 million to 313 million is some what out of skew.

I don't think anyone is saying there will be a perfect world if guns weren't allowed... Chances are a lot of crazy people could still get their hands on guns. But if gun laws had even the slightest impact on preventing people from having guns... Not sure how you can argue against that one. If the murderer's mother did not have guns in her possession, isnt there a likely chance that the kid wouldn't have the access to those guns and bring them to the school? If guns laws had even the smallest chance of preventing the massacre from yesterday, would you not implement those laws?

Look. I'm a 20 year college student. Many of you are grown men. It is not my place to tell anyone what's right or wrong, nor do I know what's right and wrong. But I do know that if my 9 year old little sister was one of those who lost their lives, I'm not sure how I would get through the rest of my life. There is no reason to have military style weapons accessible to citizens IMO. I think there is a strong possibility that with guns laws the massacre would not have occurred yesterday.
