True or false. Does Ukraine ban political parties they find problematic?

True or false. Does Ukraine evict Russian Orthodox monks from their monastery?

True or false. Does Ukraine send soldiers in vans to grab men off the street to throw into the fight?

People can support giving money and weapons to Ukraine. I get it. I just wish they'd be honest about the reasons why and the people they are throwing money at.

The reason Ukraine lost the south was local collaborators giving up defenses to the Russians. Turns out they don't take kindly to people trying to help out the Russians.

Your post doesn't address banning political parties, evicting monks, or ambushing men on the street.

Maybe those regions have substantial populations who don't want to be part of Ukraine?

TBH, I don't think this is a Boomer thing. You had plenty of Gen Z, X and Milleniels voting to support this. Ukraine desperately wants to be part of NATO. NATO is not going to allow them to join if they're going to run a repressive government.

The banned parties are mostly small/not in parliament. The one with seats (10% or so) was led by an Oligarch who fled the country after the war. Some had members who were tabbed to run a puppet government.

The MP's from that party are still in parliament. The ruling party hasnt expelled them because it counts on their votes for some legislation it otherwise couldnt get through. They'll most likely rebrand as a less pro russian party with similar positions.

The banned church is led by the Russian Patriarch who's all in on the invasion. Many parishes/members left before this was announced.

There's also concerned the affiliated monks are spying for Moscow.

"More than 50 priests, at the latest count, are being investigated for collaborating with Russian forces. One of the most notorious is Father Mykola Yevtushenko, who is alleged to have collaborated with the Russians during their savage 33-day occupation of Bucha, offering benedictions to the occupying soldiers and urging his parishioners to welcome the invading forces. Aside from trying to stamp an ecclesiastical imprimatur on the invasion, he also pointed out locals most likely to resist the occupation of Bucha, the suburban town just northwest of Kyiv that has become a byword for war crimes."

"A poll conducted in December by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology found that 78 percent of Ukrainians believe the government should indeed intervene in the activities of the UOC; 54 percent think the church should be banned outright and 24 percent prefer a softer option of state control and supervision. Just 12 percent think UOC should be left alone."

The Ukranian state has done well in providing essential services in the war. They've improved public trust in government as well as rooting out a lot of Moscow aligned oligarchs and corrupt judges.

This all sounds very Abraham Lincolnish from the Civil War. Jailing pro secessionists, suspending the writ of habeas corpus, etc.

There's always a risk for over reach, but Ukraine's two goals post war are joint the euro zone/getting funds for rebuilding and having security guarantees. Doing that requires an open political system and good will from the Europeans who are going to pick up the lion's share from the economic side. I think that incentive structure will prevent Zelensky from turning the country into a one party state ala Hungary.

Also, most millenials (me included) are pro Ukraine. Young Gen Zers may be different, but foreign policy positions usually evolve as young people grow up.

Ukraine continues to lose. If you have an open mind, give the article a read.

If you have an open mind give Colonel Macgregor a listen as he sums us the past 18 months.

I agree.

Only open minded folks can appreciate such great factual reporting. The Ukraine invasion was actually a gigachad move to improve the economy. If you can't see it, you're just now open minded.

That dude lost creditability with me as soon as he said "Failed Ukaranian gains and couldn't stop Russian advances".

Ukraine has taken back most of what Russia initially took and Russia has retreated more than it has advanced.

Keep in mind that Ukraine isn't interested in taking over Russian Territory, just reestablishing their borders.

So you listened to 30 seconds of the interview?

Putin is now allowing regional governments to raise their own private military companies and army them.

Putin probably wants to mobilize more troops and be able to blame local leaders when things go wrong. It also allows him to push war costs onto local governments. The obvious downside is it creates/strengthens new power centers that can challenge his monopoly on violence.

Either way this isn't the move of someone who's doing well in a war.

If you look at authoritarian states that's how they normally crack. Some underling takes on the big guy and wins, or sets off a war lord situation.

It looks like the Ukranians have started breaking through in a few locations in the South, at least up to the main defensive lines. If they can get through there things could get interesting.

They started blasting positions with artillery before advancing with armor. I don't know why they didn't do that before.

I can't say for sure, but in many instances, it looks like Ukraine has let Russia expend a lot of men and munitions to deplete them, then they go on the offensive before Russia can resupply.

OSINT has shown Ukraine has heavily focused on knocking out Russian artillery and ammo before/during this offensive. At some point Russia is really going to start falling off in terms of being able to defend.

They’re teetering towards economic ruin regardless of their burn rate on the front lines —

Paying their soldiers $4k/year to go die in some dictator’s vanity exercise… will never complain about my office job again.

How much more money do the Oligarchs bleed before they put a stop to this?

Putin must have them in his back pocket, or they're getting something out of this on the side. Otherwise you'd think those guys would band together and put a hit out on him like old @Rasputin .

The losers are the innocent Russian civilians now dealing with financial crisis while the Russian elite wage unnecessary land wars. I feel bad that these peoples' lives are suffering at the hand of their government.
