FWIW: I believe that the media had plenty of information but decided to forget some of it and, due to that, misread this situation. What they forgot for some dumb reason was the history that the Wagner boss had with the high military. He and the Russian chief and the head of their Defense Department have a long history of hatred. When the Wagner boss realized that his personnel were in extra danger because of the incompetency from up top, he complained vigorously about that. Putin refused to cave because his up top guys are more important and controllable than Wagner. Then Wagner had an airstrike called down on them. Whether deliberate (doubtful) or due to incompetence (likely) or due to simply bad war management (also likely), the Wagner Boss had had enough. Putin would not respond through any regular channels, and the top brass refused his demands for direct face-to-face.
Now came the tipping point. This guy is not anti-Russia, nor is he anti-War. He is in fact a monster who wants to fight war as dirty and as scorched Earth as possible. And with as little incompetent personnel loss as possible --- he is a nothing else matters but victory killing machine and he is good at it. He has also become recognized for that unique (in Russia) "expertise." He is furious that he cannot run this war as he believes it must be run, and more furious that he is uselessly losing Wagner troops. In his constricted world, there are only two options: Back Wagner out of the War and refuse to fight until he gets change; or march right up to the Kremlin and demand change. THE CHANGE THAT HE DEMANDS IS NOT PUTIN. He actually thinks that Putin will see that his cronies are botching this, and will demand a war change.
BUT he misjudges Putin. Prigozhin is all about War. Putin is all about Mad Chess. Putin CANNOT do what Prigozhin wants and remain the Mad Chess Master. So Prigozhin fails and does so because he really DOESN'T want to spill Russian blood except for a couple of Kremlin higher-ups. And he certainly doesn't want to spill Wagner blood. I was amazed that anyone found a way out of this which has seemed so non-violent.
The bottomline: Putin and his power manipulation remains pretty much intact.
Ukraine gets something big out of this, but not the kind of things that are usually talked about. What Ukraine seems to have gotten out of this is WAGNER GONE. That's not the world, but that's still quite a relief. Nothing in this lessens one iota the need to continue to pour aid of all types into the Ukraine society and military.
