Any reason why he's only a lb coach right now? Sounds like a good hire though…

Left Auburn after the Chizik fallout there. Rex Ryan wanted someone who could not only coach LB's but also had coordinator experience since Dennis Thurman (Jets DC) was in his 1st year as a DC. That Rex Ryan would hire him speaks volumes about his abilities. Living in Atlanta I've watched Van Gorder up close at both Georgia and the Falcons. Excellent coach, VERY intense. Likes to coach from sideline rather than from up in the booth.

I really like intense coaches as well as ones that are on the sidelines instead of the booth. I just like the fact hes there on the field and interacting personally with the guys. How soon will the hire be anounced?

Didn't know who he was, but Im glad we are getting someone who Brian Kelly can trust, has NFL DC experience and has coached in a 4-3 and 3-4.

Just curious, if it's an NFL guy and his season ends tomorrow and our season is done, why wait until after the BCS championship game to announce it?

He was the DC at Auburn last year (I know, I know), lost his job in the coaching turnover there, landed with the Jets. Would assume that's why.

So what happened here? The only red flag. I plead ignorance on the details of Auburn's meltdown.

Auburn is lacking talent on the defensive side this year, and I think it was even worse last year. Their defense stinks this year even with a good DC.

Thanks. I'm hearing he's an effective recruiter, and if so, then why the lack of defensive talent at Auburn? How much responsibility does he bear?

Just trying to learn more about him.

He was there for one year.

Notre Dame: Brian Kelly says he has made an outside hire for his defensive coordinator, and the contract is being worked out. Fox Sports reporter Mike Garafolo says New York Jets linebackers coach Brian VanGorder will interview on Monday, but it is merely a formality, and that VanGorder is expected to be the next Notre Dame defensive coordinator. Kelly and VanGorder worked together at Grand Valley State in the late 1980s. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport also reports VanGorder will get the job.

The more I think about, the more I like this potential hire:

* Proven success as a college DC
* Good recruiter
* NFL experience
* Coaches LBs, where we need a position coach
* Experience at Georgia gives us recruiting connections in the southeast

Tale of the Tape:

Hair: Nice, feathery. Small downgrade from Diaco, but negligible in the grand scheme of things

Mustache: Pencily, porn-starry. Looks like John Holmes son. Definite upgrade

Skin: Looks like he smokes a pack of Winstons daily. That's the kind of guy you want to go into battle behind. Upgrade.

DO WANT
