It's really a matter of what position coaches Kelly hires at this point.

Offense:

OC: Mike Denbrock

QB: Kelly
RB: Tony Alford
WR/TE: Scott Booker
OL: Harry Heistand

Defense:

DC: Cooks (Elston as Co.)

DL: Mike Elston
LB: _______
CB: Kerry Cooks
S: Bob Elliott

Does Denbrock become the QB coach? Don't OCs normally have that function?

Give me an outside Special Teams guy and a LB coach and call it a day.

Does anyone on the staff get the assistant HC position Diaco held?

I'd give it to Alford, and Make Denbrock the OC/QB coach.

I'd hire a good, young WR coach.

Elston is tempting as co-DC with Cooks.

I like the idea of getting an LB coach to held Booker at ST.

The thought of hiring a ‘name’ from outside the program does intrigue me… Hell it might even do the staff some good to bring in someone like that… has it been stated outright the long term hire will only come from within??

I know it was briefly alluded to earlier, but why not Ed Orgeron as the defensive coordinator or defensive line coach? He would be a tremendous get not only because of the USC thing but also as an excellent recruiter who has a lot of ties in the south. He would be a home run hire.

Three reasons:

1. Too much money.
2. Ability to work with BK.
3. He is a package deal with Kiffen.

Yeah, the thing is it is easy to promote from within for OC.

DC... that was Diaco's animal. I'm not sure what you do. And the pieces we have on D are all in a specific mold that kind of sucks for certain other systems.

and this is why I think Kelly hires from within. Then he'll hire a new position coach. That sounds like the way you would build a solid program to me. It obviously wouldn't work out 100% of the time theoretically it sounds good.

Sean Mele on ISD said Brian VanGorder might be a solid choice, in the instance Kelly goes outside.

Won Broyles award as DC at Georgia, coached with Kelly at Grand Valley, is now a LB coach with Jets.

Yeah I wondered if Kelly would ever even consider it being that Orgeron is large personality himself. I would think adding a recruiting machine like Orgeron motivated to stick it to SC would be worth the occasional headache for Kelly.

Is the Kiffen combo just a guess on your part or is there some actual substance to it?

VanGorder's 1987 American Heritage School team was ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida.

interesting

University of Georgia[edit]

In 2001 he was hired as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. During his first year as defensive coordinator in 2001, the Bulldogs allowed just 18.9 points per game, ended up fifth in rushing defense and ranked 17th in scoring defense.[3] The 2002 season saw VanGorder's defense not only lead the SEC in scoring defense, but finished fourth nationally.[4] The Bulldogs allowed less than 15 points per game during the season on their way to eventually winning the Sugar Bowl and finishing third in the final national poll. For his performance, VanGorder named as the seventh recipient of the Valvoline Southern Sports Tonight Assistant Coach of the Year.[5]

In 2003, VanGorder's defense ranked third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in total defense and sixth in passing defense.[6] In turn, VanGorder received the Frank Boyles "Assistant Coach of the Year" award, which honors the nation's top assistant coach.[7] During his final season at Georgia in 2004, the 10–2 Bulldogs were ranked seventh in the final national poll as VanGorder's defense finished the season ranked eighth and ninth in scoring defense.[8]

During his Georgia tenure, six of VanGorder's players were selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, including defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan, safety Thomas Davis and defensive end David Pollack in the first round, and safety Sean Jones and linebackers Boss Bailey, as well as Odell Thurman in the second round. During his four years at Georgia the Bulldogs defense only give up 30 points one time, against LSU in the 2003 SEC Championship Game.

Just kidding on it.

The VanGorder mention is something to think about. He never seemed to fit what Auburn was doing but he is a proven DC.

I wonder if BK goes after Kerry Coombs for a position coach. BK brought him in at UC and really seemed to like him. He could be a defensive position coach and would really solidify SW Ohio from a recruiting standpoint. Not a big name, but another guy BK has coached with.

I thought Kerry turned Kelly down initially when Kelly was hired.

Fleming at UCF would be one I would consider. I think he runs a 4-3 as well but why not?

Don't have too much time so not sure if this has been posted but Pete Roussel is saying that Diaco plans to offer the DC job to Elston. If Diaco leaves and takes Elston that will really hurt.

That would be a game changer.
