This is a good move.
The Skins are betting on being able to address needs with FAs instead of through the draft... this has never worked for them before, but when you consider their primary needs are CB, S, and secondary needs are WR, ILB, OL... it's not that hard to address needs at CB, S, WR, and ILB through free agents.
Their biggest need was QB and as it has been proven time and time again it's nearly impossible to land a franchise QB through the FA wire or trades. They had to do whatever it took to get RGIII or purposely tank all of next season to get Barkley.
I understand what you are saying but 40 million really isn't that much money to address the needs of this team.
Everyone thought the Giants gave up to much for Eli too. If I'm a 'Skins fan, I'm happy. If I'm a Rams fan, I'm beyond estatic. Skins had to overpay to get it. It was a fight with Cleveland. If the Skins don't stack up their Oline, they are in trouble. See: Vick.
A cheaper, better option than V. Jackson would be Manningham. Giants aren't resigning him. Snyder can not screw this up. He gave up a lot no doubt but RGIII is no Akili Smith.
That OL should be a priority. I'm a Giants fan too so this is an unbiased opinion. I would look to deal Fletcher, Landry etc. Get some fresh blood. Freeney is available. Just saying.

this trade certainly takes the saints bounty program off the front page
whats more shocking to me than this trade is that the jets extended sanchez--that was the dumbest move of the offseason IMO.
Wait...so now it's a question about smarts and accuracy??? If this was a trade to get Luck would it still be that crappy of a trade??? Is RGIII not smart because he went to Baylor as opposed to Stanford??? Everyone and their mom has been raving about Luck being the next great QB and he has thrown the same number of passes in the NFL as RGIII....He has just as much upside as he does imo, but maybe I'm crazy!!! Newton came in not nearly as polished a passer as RGIII is coming into the league and look at what he was able to accomplish!!!!
Good points by you and irishff... I bolded the only part I disagree with. Skins are playing a 3-4 and I don't think Freeney fits. If they're going to go spend money I think it needs to be on interior linemen.
1. Who said he is not smart?
2. What is you avatar? Can anyone help me who those guys are?
NDinFL was saying that being smart and accurate is more important than being able to outrun a defensive end... implying that RGIII is neither smart nor accurate...As for the avatar, it's Luck, Newton, and RGIII in the 40 at the NFL combine
He's definitely fast as hell. I'm not convinced that he is destined for stardom in the NFL. Its nothing personal against him, I've just seen too many skill guys who dominate in college fail to translate that into the NFL. So, for that reason, I think Washington gave up WAY to much. Like, laughably, ridiculously too much. I would expect a fan that paints his face and his chest for games to make this trade. I wouldn't expect professional personnel men be so foolish.

I respect your opinion Rhode...I just happen to disagree with it. I feel as if two future 1st-rounders and this years 2nd in essentially what was a 3-team bidding war was as expected. I think the closer to the draft it got, the asking price would've been even more ridiculous...I saw a few mock drafts that said the Redskins may possibly have taken Tannehill at 6 (before this deal was done)...If Tannehill becomes a stud (like i feel Luck and RGIII) will be, it would sting slightly because of the future picks given up....We're betting on the fact that someone of RGIII's talent can make the guys around him better and from what I've seen so far, he has all those intangibles...
I could see how it would come across that way, but I assure you I never meant to imply RGIII was dumb.
My point is, you can have a freakish 40 time, shuttle time, vertical, etc... And that has very little to do with being a successful QB in the league.
Guys like Eli, Peyton, Brady, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, etc... Kind of prove the point.
Being able to recognize a zone blitz, Pre-snap, call the appropriate audible, then go through your progressions and find the open receiver.
^far more difficult and more important in the NFL
And I guess to clarify a little further, I watched 3 of RGIII's games this year, and while he is an amazing athlete I didn't see many Pre-snap adjustments, as opposed to busted play improvisations.
The latter of those two being far easier against the UW's of the NCAA rather than the Steelers or Ravens...
Well, since you have clarified your point, I'll apologize for jumping on you good sir...Now, I know the Redskins gave a bevy of picks to the Rams...I don't think they still get up on the 49ers level, but at least we screwed Pete Carroll's chances of (ever) going to the playoffs...YOU'RE ALL WELCOME
As for the Rams, I think Bradford can be special...His rookie year was great, but then he took a step back last year...He's had a history of injuries...For his sake, because I like the kid, I hope he can be healthy but that should be a huge storyline for them in the next few years
when you have had 17 starting QBs in the last 13 years...you (washington) have to make a move like this.
this is a QB league
did they overpay of course they did but rg3 is what that franchise needs.
im a giant fan and i wish pox on the skins but while shocking i dont think its a terrible move on their part.
Exactly. Yes, they overpaid. Yes, they absolutely had to do it. Both teams win here... but the Rams win more. The Redskins are 100% banking on free agents to fill their holes.... and that's mighty dangerous... but they had little choice.
