I love the amount of local talent this year! We need to beat out all other midwest teams for this talent. period.

It'll be very interesting to see who is added to this list as the year goes on. Zeke Pike and Gehrig Dieter are two guys I will keep my eye on.

It seems at QB will be the most interesting position to watch. We will likely only take 1 and we will be on the very inside track for Gunner Kiel and Maty Mauk who we we already have offers out to. It's interesting to see that Mauk is offered over a guy like Pike who is rated higher and both have the family connection to Kelly. Is it because Mauk has mobility? Is it because Kelly & Co. simply think the other guys are better prospects and want to be very picky?

PS. I am so terribly bored right now. Lacrosse season cannot get here soon enough. At least I will then have something to follow through May.

Interesting we have offers out to 2 Ohio St RBs but not:

Scout.com: Rushel Shell Profile

Rumors true about grades?

Also as an aside; love how the staff does not care about commitments, just means that team is currently leading. I would be psyched if we flipped some kids from o$u. Tressel is going to find out Ohio is Kelly's recruiting ground too...

Don't need the Nose is this years class. Next years, yes. But if we get a Nose now, he'll have three years to sit and wait behind Nix... that's a lot of eligability.

Any NT we get this cycle would basically have to sit one year. After that he would pretty much automatically be in the 2 deep with Nix. We lose most of the interior DL players after 2012, having only Nix and Stockton back. If we want an elite defense we need to have more then one elite player so we can rotate. We need a NT in this class. Unless you want freshman stepping on campus and starting right away out of need and not ability.

I'm under the impression that we're going to need an elite nt prospect atleast every other year as long as we continue to run the 3-4. With the rumored move to more of a 4-3 that number could change.

The idea of us going two blank years without a real stud NT would make MY head implode more than us "getting Barry Sanders" or the various other sorts of elite wants expressed earlier.

Virginia Tech recruits tackles every year, and when they don't get who they want consider it a disaster. Even though they run a 4-3, they go for more than one every year---so does the SEC. All those elite teams know that the monsters-in-the-middle are the rarest of breeds and the source of winning defense. I actually think that Diaco would prefer signing two next year as they had a whiff this year.

And while we're on defense: despite Manti, and our cohort of rush-linebacking studs [Fleming, Shembo, IWilliams, Rabasa], we are NOT well-stocked at MLB [only Grace is that sort in the current new class], nor Dogs [only Councell is projected as a natural fit there]. I expect a long look at linebackers in the coming group too, with some of those early D-line candidates envisioned to play elsewhere at ND.

And, due to Badger coming back, and Kelly's opinion that Farley is already the most "body-ready" frosh of the current crop, we might not see a ton of safeties in the next class, but only an elite [Lyons-like] one.

I'm not sure they'd consider this year a whiff taking into account I believe they only offered a couple NT type guys, but you're right we're going to need one maybe two this year.

By the way, when it comes down to the blood-letting, I'm going to bet that Kelly has nearly a full boat of scholarships to play with this year on the recruiting trail [assuming the stats earlier in this thread are correct]. 6 fifth years going + 8 graduating [eligibility used up ] seniors going + denial, if necessary, of 8 or 9 fifth-year eligibles = 22 or 23 signees, which is seemingly what we do nowadays. That count didn't take any transfers into account, such as seems to be happening with Montana, and could happen with any number of guys on this loaded roster.

I would think that, given the overall structure of the talent on this team, that only Crist [if he himself is still around], Cave [a near All-American by then], KLM, Cwynar, and Slaughter would be considered "safe". Even a good player like Hafis might not come back due to the load we have in the D-line. Our O-line will look like prime developmental grounds for this year's stud frosh [then to be sophomores] and players like Golic may be let go.

The coaching staff seems to be operating on a premise [which I have heard is true] that O-linemen tend to make their minds up relatively early so you better get in the swim early with them. We seem to have sprayed the O-line offers out liberally around the country in hopes of a quick foundation to the class. I can't imagine the added stress that places on Warriner to evaluate and "pull-the-trigger" on these so quickly. Nice to have a veteran coach in that position.

I agree with you completely. Seems the staff is really focusing on the positions that tend to commit early, not only the OL, but QB's and TE's as well. It would appear they are trying to lock up an early foundation for our class from these groups, before putting the full-court press on the players at the positions in which they usually wait until signing day.
