Potential Transfers INTO ND

Notre Dame’s hunt for another fifth-year senior transfer has led the program to the Pac-12.
The Irish staff has reached out to Cal safety Avery Sebastian, who’s made the decision to leave the Golden Bears program after graduating from the University. Sebastian, a former U.S. Army All-American, told Irish Illustrated that he’s already contacted Cody Riggs about the process in addition to Isaac Rochell, a former high school teammate at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy.
Sebastian, who went by Avery Walls coming out of high school, played special teams as a freshman at Cal and made four starts as a sophomore. He tore his Achilles’ tendon in the first game of his junior year. Injuries limited Sebastian to just seven games last season. He made 21 tackles and one interception.
Jonathan Gess, head coach at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, said Notre Dame has already called for a background check on Sebastian. Gess believes the safety would be a fit for the Irish program.
“He definitely is a Notre Dame kid
,” Gess said. “I’d imagine he’s a pretty hot commodity for all these DI schools that need a safety right now. Even if he doesn’t come in and start, he’s going to push the starter. You need competition.”
Gess called Sebastian one of the smarter players he’s coached in the secondary, even if he only had him for one year. Sebastian transferred into ELCA as a senior and Gess said the safety educated him on the finer points of defensive back play.
“I’m an offensive guy and we didn’t have a defensive backs coach and when I started working with Avery he taught me a lot,” Gess said. “He was like a coach inside the secondary. It sounds crazy, but we were really successful that year. We trusted his knowledge so much and his ability to relate to people.”
Gess said Sebastian and Rochell remain in contact.
“Avery, he’s magnetic,” Gess said. “When you meet Avery, after two days you’ll feel like you’ve known him for four years. When you bring him onto your team, he’s going to lead it. He’s going to influence players. I think he and Isaac could be politicians, they’re that good with people.”
Notre Dame’s needs at safeties are severe, even after signing Nicco Fertitta and Mykelti Williams. The Irish will have just two fully fit safeties during spring practice in Max Redfield and Elijah Shumate. Drue Tranquill is returning from a torn ACL and Nicky Baratti has battled multiple shoulder injuries.
Seniors Austin Collinsworth and Eilar Hardy both departed the program this off-season.
Sebastian wouldn’t arrive in South Bend until the summer, similar to Riggs last year, but he’d walk into a secondary in need of help. Gess believes the Irish would get a run-supporting safety in the Cal transfer.
“He’s a head hunter,” Gess said. “He wants to hit you, he wants to hit you hard. He’s definitely a run-fit safety first. Can he play the pass? Yes, but his strength is playing the run.”

Ishaq was finally going to break out? Reality check folks. I realize he would've been veteran status, but there is younger, better talent on this team. Best of luck to him in his future, next.

I think you're undervaluing his pass rushing abilities. He was pretty disruptive in '12 and '13 in pure pass rushing situations. Thing is one of the DL studs usually cleaned up, but he was fairly regularly flushing the QB out of the pocket. I don't think he'll ever be the 5:s: we all hoped he'd be, but I do think he has a lot to offer where the DL needs it most- pass rushing. Outside of Trumbetti, what youngster can offer that this coming season?

This. Ishaaq's natural position is DE, I don't think he was ever a natural fit at LB unless his hand was in the dirt. 2014 could have been a good year for him, and he was slated to start. If we were ever going to get the best out of him it was going to be in the 4-3 as a DE. Hopefully he gets his academic situation figured out and we've got a spot for him, I think 2015 could be his year.

So anyone actually seen this guy play? Seems he had a breakout sophomore season before an injury caused him to miss all of his junior year, and then was "meh" last season and not a full-time starter. That's just going off stats.

Did he transfer to Cal? I searched on 247 their 2010 through 2013 classes and he is not listed as a commit.

I think his last name was Walls? And then he changed it? Per PANDFAN above.

So 247 has Brennan Scarlett (very interested) and Avery (Notre Dame seems to have the edge) as two potential candidates as well as Wayne Lyons and Kelsey Young. Not much on the Stanford boys at this time.

Right, the IE investigation team should win some kind of award. Question, should I change the OP of the thread? and if so any ideas?

Give me the two Cal kids and let the Stanford kids go elsewhere.

If I am not mistaken, Lyons wants to play CB anyways.

If we got a healthy scarlett and Ishaq came back, we're starting the season with the best dl in the country perhaps.

Imagine our 2 deep. Jones, cage, day, rochelle in the middle. Trumbetti, ishaq, scarlett on the outside.

Tillery rotating everywhere.

day is good, not great A-
jones has shown he can be good, B
cage was serviceable and held his own when he played but wasn't a difference maker or great, decent B-

Trumbetti-had flashes but again decent B-
Ishaq--has had a few flashes, not consistent or great C+
Scarlett- been too injured to really know

Tillery seems like he is going to be good, but we're not talking about a freshman freak specimen like a clowney , nkmeidchi or however u spell that

I appreciate that You're not drinking the kool aid loke me lol. It's nice to keep it real around here.

If jones comes back healthy, you're underrating him imo. he was a monster when he wanted to be.

Ishaq coming back for his final run and in a 4-3 for the first time is being criminal ally underrated by everyone imo.

exactly....hasn't shown he has wanted to

same goes for ishaq...we are ALL expecting him to be something we thought he could be...he didn't fit in right w/ the system under diaco...but does he REALLY want it and will he ACTUALLY get back in...because the nonverbal cues BK was giving yesterday seem to indicate unlikely

Ishaq has 1 sack in 3 years. I might be in the minority here but I often question his desire. There are a lot of plays where it looks like he is going through the motions. I think of the 2012 season and the difference in effort and attitude between him and a guy like Prince Shembo that year.

I have a new operating system on my phone and it's terrible for typing. Just terrible. It corrects 'that' to 'thay' everytime and I do not know how to reverse it. And it adds '.' everywhere.
