Lol, I've never actually called her that. Just messing around. IDK how it could be offensive, I guess I didn't know it was a derogatory term. I'll edit my post.

Edited to add: I was really hoping to find a picture of that old "pedo crab" that used to circulate the message boards back in the 90's / early 00's that had a big old hand-drawn-with-microsoft-paint red crab with this big nasty moustache and it said "a/s/l?" on it. Only in my dreams would I be able to attend ND. I was commissioned under the limited duty officer program in the Navy. It is one of the few was to go from enlisted to officer.

I've got a Flag questions, or more appropriately for you an Ensign questions. That ensign hanging on the bulkhead behind you appears to be the same size as an Army Garrison flag, 20' hoist x 38' fly. What name is given to that size flag, er, ensign called in the Navy?


A millenium ago when I wore o.d. the Army only flew the Garrison flag on special occasions/holidays. The rest of the year they flew a Post flag which has a slightly less than 9' hoist by 17' fly.

Does the Navy fly the big ensign from a mast or hang it indoors as shown in your photo or outdoors from a railing?

Is there a smaller ensign for normal sea duty?

Does the size of ensign flown depend on the size of the ship? Say a cruiser versus a frigate?

It is called a Battle Ensign.

It would be flown from the mast.

Yes there are smaller Ensigns that are flown from the mast during normal operations out to sea. The exception is on Sundays inport when the Holiday Ensign is flown.

Yes the size of the flag depends on the size of the ship from what I understand.
