And Coach Kelly just admitted to Everyone that he can't fix Golson but to bad he is going to play regardless. If i am Zaire i take those comments this coach doesn't believe in me.

And that's why you would not be starting. What Zaire *should* do is take those comments to mean that, if he steps up his game and focuses on improving, he will get a shot.

I personally liked that approach from Kelly. Some kids/people learn better through traumatic or terrible circumstances/mistakes before they ever change or figure it out. Hopefully this is that for Golson.

Fuck that. Golson IS the reason we lost. I have no problem with BK stating the obvious. Hopefully it'll light a fire under EG's ass.

* We are missing Joe Schmidt big time up the middle.

* How do we lose contain so often with the athletes that we have?

Thank god you're not on our roster. You might faint when Vangorder inevitably steps on a daisy.

Yes, Golson lost us the game. But this game doesn't matter without him because we wouldn't be in this position without him.

Know what we are without a playmaker at QB? A predictable offense that can't run, has an average OL, and WRs that cannot separate.

When we put that much pressure on him to do it all, this is what you get. He's our QB and that should not change as long as he's at ND.

very frustrating game because it was obvious if we play them 5 times I think we beat them the next 5. This assumes that EG has 2 or less turnovers a game. This game is 100% on EG. O-line wasn't good but Tommy Rees doesn't get sacked 7 times in this game. EG holds the ball too long. I will say EG is a playmaker but has been fairly useless in the read option. He needs to pull it back and run or roll and pass but until he learns how to protect the ball BK probably will discourage it. I see the rest of the team conscientiously protecting the ball (Carlisle, Robinson, etc.) but EG is still swinging his arms and holding the ball out wildly with what must be a weak grip or something. EG is making his O-Line look bad. We actually ran the ball well but since we were in such a hole had to give it up. Kelly's play calling was suspect and not creative. Not enough screens or draws to neutralize the blitz or rolling the pocket. The receivers and backs caught the ball really well sans the unforgivable boner by Robinson. ThAt was just inexcusable and whole we may not have won the game if he catches that ball we certainly don't look much worse with a 55-31 loss. Feel bad for the holder but one more legit boner and he is out Nd if he has a scholarship you pull it. Okwara seems to have been MIA as has Hill. Trumbetti is a Watts in the making. Day is dominant, Jones could improve along with Rochelle at being effective more often. Redfield's whiff was cowardly and inexcusable. Good for the analyst to call him out on that play. It represented ND's lackluster effort and execution on that drive. That drive mirrored the 3 bad incompletions and then 15 yard sack by EG on his final series. Farley is our only ballhawk in our secondary and what a great recovery for him from last year. I would like to see him on the field every play. Morgan looked fast and athletic but missed tackles and over pursued like Teo did as a freshman. A lot of upside for this team next year and if we play no turnover football we can play with anybody. I say that EG is now on. Short leash. Most of his ints are not ugly as he needs better throwing lanes and for his receivers to not undermine him with dropped/tipped balls. Thought Butler was a definite drop off for Riggs. If we get Ishaq, KR and DD back next year along with Grace, Scmidt, and a few others we will be favored in most of our games. Turnovers will be the statistic that defines our destiny.

Really?

Really?

What game do we lose with Zaire playing? We scored 14 against Stanford. Zaire could have done that. Many other game would not have been close without EG tour overs keeping the opponent in the game. Our read option would be for real and our rushing yards by RB and QB would be about 50% more than today. I think we know we would have about 1/2 the turnovers. After watching the Blue a gold game why do we think he isn't capable of distributing the ball to our 5-6 playmakers? When EG is on and not turning the ball over he is as good as it gets in CFB. When he turns the ball over in an almost unforced way we can't live with the risk. He starts against Northwestern but if he pulls the fumble BS without barely a touch you pull him. I don't see any improvement or discipline in how he still does not tuck the ball tight when he runs. The ball swings out away from his body. In addition he leaves yards on the field like a missed TD run against FSU on the final drive. Zaire will get more yards, fumble less bottom line. We could be 8-1 instead of 7-2 if it weren't for EG. Argue my point.

Your point is absurd because it assumes that everything you just typed in that wall of text will come true. We don't know that Zaire would fumble less, we don't know that he would excel at running the option, we don't know that we would be 8-1 with him.

You're logic is the same as people who were calling for Hendrix last year. "Rees is terrible! Hendrix is more athletic! Rees is the main reason we lost the games we did! If Rees's brain isn't helping us, why is he playing over some who's better?!" The only problem is that he wasn't better. The USC game happened and everyone realized what an actual bad QB looked like.

You can't apply your fantasy world to this stuff and just assume it will all come true. I know you think you know a lot about football, but you . . . you just don't. And I don't either. I don't think people understand that sometimes. Brian Kelly is likely better at coaching football than you will be at doing ANYTHING in your ENTIRE life. Think about that. Now take into account the fact that he has seen thousands upon thousands of reps between these two players. You have seen hundreds of Golson and probably 25 of Zaire. Do you really think you're in a better position to make this call? Really?

You bring up a valid point about Zaire's comfort level in running the football. Playing in Coach Ed Domsitz run-oriented offense at Archbishop Alter, it's surprising that Zaire was able to develop into an Elite Eleven quarterback. Testament to his dedication to acquiring passing skills at a high school program that runs the football. Hopefully, Zaire will take some snaps against Notre Dame's next three opponents. But, with all his faults and foibles, Everett Golson(17-3) will conclude this season as the starter.

I'm not sure what you are prattling on about. I was pointing out to koonja that this was not the thread about whether or not Golson should be replaced. There IS a thread for that discussion, however. So, if you would like to discuss it, I would suggest that you join the folks in that thread. I'll post the link again, to make it easy:

1. OL was dominated, which contributed to Golson's bad day.
2. D is too young, it shows at times.
3. Robinson has to make that catch.
4. Team never through towel in, I like that.
5. EG has to quit turning it over.

just as I told my wife last night, expect that:

1. Michigan State, loses convincingly to #3 Oregon on the road, and convincingly to (at the time) about 15-ranked Ohio State, AT HOME.

2. Notre Dame loses (?) to #2 FSU on the road, and to #9 ASU, ON THE ROAD, when trailed by only 3 points with 6 minutes to play.

Undefeated FSU is now ranked No. 2; ASU is 7.

Oregon is now No. 3; Ohio State is 8.

which team with 2 losses, Notre Dame or Michigan State, SHOULD be ranked higher? remember, Michigan State just lost, AT HOME, to a team who got beat by Virginia Tech at home.

who else did Michigan State beat, which makes them deserving of being ranked 3 positions higher than Notre Dame?

was it: (a) Jacksonville State, (b) Eastern Michigan, (c) Wyoming, or (d) Indiana?

was it Nebraska, the team which almost lost to McNeese State, at home? they are really that much better than Stanford?

heck, we even beat Michigan by a lot more. shut them out.

remember: Notre Dame BEAT Michigan State last year - their only loss.

what a joke. all the voters see is the 55 points.

"Among Arizona State’s seven touchdowns, three covered drives of 13, 23 and eight yards, and two others were interception returns of 59 and 58 yards."

35 points right there.

And if the resumes were reversed, you'd have a similarly long diatribe about the fact that Michigan State's best win was against a mediocre, 4-loss Stanford team. It must be bias...

Regardless of his bias, or non-bias, I happen to think that he has a point. Michigan State's schedule is EMBARRASSING!! There is no way that they should be ranked in front of us. I'm not saying that it is an anti-ND bias, but I do think that the voters have it wrong.

I just got home from my travels to ASU. Why is it such an adventure when we are kicking a FG, to catch a snap and put it on the ground? The ASU fan in front of me called it before it happened.

1. Our O-line was horrible. Golson got sacked 7 times alone yesterday. Didn't Rees get sacked 7 times all of last year?
2. Golson needs to quit turning the damn ball over, 11 INT's the past 6 games is inexcusable for ANY QB.
3. Schmidt & Riggs were certainly missed yesterday.
4. Jaylon??
5. Nice job by the team fighting their way back.
6. What is it going to take for Zaire to get some PT??
7. 41 yards rushing with who we have in our backfield??
8. I give my game ball to Cam, he is tough as nails, and he worked his tail off earning his 2 TD's.
9. Replace Lombard with McGlinchey.
10. Next year is next year, we still have this year to finish out.

He's the starting QB at Notre Dame........... or insert any other major DI-A school in the country. How is saying that the INTs are on him throwing him under the bus?

The way he did it, cutting off the reporter (who was clearly setting up the question so Kelly wouldn't have to blame Golson for all of the turnovers) just came off the wrong way.

You're right, he's the starting QB at ND. Coach is going to have a long talk with him after the game and during film. The media's going to have a field day dissecting his Jeckel and Hyde routine of the last month. Fans are going to be clamoring to see his backup play. Students are going to give him weird looks at class. And, most of all, he will be beating himself up over every single missed read, dropped ball, forced pass, etc....

So why does coach feel the need to bring it up to the media? To force the conversation when a reporter was clearly trying to avoid it? I'm not saying Golson should be immune to criticism; I'm saying that I don't see any possible value to Kelly talking about it to the media. What do you think a stud recruit and his family see when they see the head coach blaming his players for poor execution? I'm really curious what gets accomplished when a coach is honest with the media.

Coach speak is a thing for a reason. "We made a lot of mistakes tonight." "Our game plan wasn't where it should have been." "Our boys fought hard out there" etc... The script should always be the same: blame the players for a win, blame yourself for a loss, congratulate the other team/coach for a hard fought game. Anything else should be saved for the privacy of the locker room.

I just don't see it. We have similar losses and their best win is better than ours.

The frustrating thing is that we scheduled teams that should have been good. But our 7 wins are against only a slightly less embarrassing lot, based on their results. The only teams with a winning record are Rice (6-3) and Stanford (5-4).

I have. It's not very good, but it's not that much worse than ours on the whole. It should be way worse, but that's not how it's shaken out.

And they still have a much better "best win" than us.

It's become crystal clear that nobody looks past the top 3 or 4 games of a team's schedule anymore. The committee (and the AP, and the coaches) will not punish a team for playing 3 or 4 complete cupcakes a year.

I am just now capable of calm writing. What really happened yesterday? It was almost like a time warp back to the 07' season. I guess with all the drudgery, we can come out of this with 1 thing that really needs to be corrected. "Notre Dame is 12-0 since the start of last season when it has one or fewer turnovers and 4-6 when it has two or more, including the Irish's two losses this season. Arizona State is 5-0 this season when it has forced two or more turnovers."
If BK decides to go back to the drawing board and says Shut Up to all the thinkers, I would applaud him!

Miss St played Southern Miss, UAB, South Alabama, and UTM
FSU played Citadel
Oregon played South Dakota and Wyoming
TCU played Samford and SMU
Alabama played Florida Atlantic, Southern Miss and WILL PLAY Western Carolina...

like I said upthread...bottom 25% of schedule clearly does not matter at all to anyone with a vote.
