At least we're admitting that Obama in part "caused" the current debt level. That's a step in the right direction.

I think "contributed to" would be more apt. I also don't think he had much of a choice. I don't think his plan was to come in and start borrowing money and injecting it into the economy. I think all serious people agreed that it was necessary, but I don't think anyone wanted to do that.

Fair enough. I guess everyone can debate the necessity of the stimulus, cash for clunkers, the "green" and solar wind investment, etc., but that's all ancient history.

The point now is that we, as a nation, need to decide how we're going to cut the deficit now that we've already gone on this spending binge. We just can't afford anymore, lest we end up like Greece.

This is exactly my point of view. The alternative to government stimulus was several million more unemployed Americans.

Republicans are in a win-win political debate here:

if Obama HAD NOT DONE the stimulus/raise debt levels/primed the pump-they get to attack him for over 25% unemployment, the world in a depression the likes we havent ever seen or lived thru in our lifetime going into this years elections

if Obama DID the stimulus etc the get to complain over 8.3% unemployment

I'd be curious to as to what a successful Romney presidency would look like four years from now. Seriously.

If the "stimulus" currently accounts for a 17% reduction in the unemployment rate I'll vote for Obama twice. Maybe three times.

You clearly missed my point then.

Can you show me some newspaper/magazine/online articles from legitimate sources talking about Obama mysteriously being a Muslim or being from Kenya?

Are you always this willfully ignorant? Have you not seen anything the past couple of months about Arizona and Kansas trying to keep him off the ballot?

Kansas considers removing Obama from ballot

With the national debt being a big part of this conversation right now.....without Google, do you know who we owe most of the 16 trillion dollars to? I'll give you a hint, it's not China. I think it's funny that most people I talk to, think it is.

I wish I could loan myself a billion dollars then just keep borrowing more instead of paying it off.

I'd be curious to as to what a successful Romney presidency would look like four years from now. Seriously.

We'd blow up Iraq, which would drive gas to like $50,000 a gallon. Rebate checks for people who "earn" via capital gains for creating all those jobs. All the Mexicans would self deport and people would complain about there being no decent Mexican food. The Supreme Court would rule that buying elections is in fact a form of speech and is therefore protected under the constitution. Millions would save on home heating by being able to light their home faucets on fire due to unregulated fracking. I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

Anyhow, good thing Chris Christy wasn't Romney's debate partner...dude woulda ate all the zingers. Babow! Thanks, thanks I'll be here all week.

I am a Canadian, so voting is out of the question. However, I hope Obama wins. Not only do I hope he wins but I would be delighted if the Democrats could take control of the Congress. In my opinion the Republican House has stymied Obama's ability to effect change.

Romney is a pawn of the economic elite. He flipped on his views regarding to anthropogenic climate change in response to threats from big donors to withdraw support. As a governor he had been a staunch environmentalist and had gone on record as accepting that human industry was a major factor in climate change. He voted for the bailouts in 2008 and yet crucifies Obama for the same bailouts. He voted against Obama's health care initiative and then criticizes Obama for not delivering on his health care promises. I hate to think what foreign aggression he will get the US involvled in. And Ron Paul is both a liar and a dangerous ideologue fixated on Ayn Rand's crackpot reactionary semi-science fiction economic philosophy.

God help us all if this pair pulls off an upset.

So, what you're saying is we as a nation should just punch ourselves in our collective faces?

Kind of.

We only have two real choices. Increase revenue (raise taxes) or lower spending. Americans won't agree to do either, but need to do both.

We wouldn't elect a person who told us the truth. Can you imagine if someone tried?......that we're basically becoming a bunch of fat, lazy dummies waiting on magic fairies to fly out our arse and make all this bad stuff to go away.

Demanding results without making an effort or sacrifice is becoming the American way.

Why diet or exercise, we can just have the doctor place a giant zip-tie in our gut.

Why go out and experience life, we can just watch other people do it on "reality" shows .

I'm starting this long rant and don't know where I'm going with this.....Sorry, I'm watching the SF Giants game and got distracted so I'll stop here.

Never mind.

Bush's policies certainly contributed to the recession. He ran up huge a debt during a period of economic growth, spending like a drunken sailor on shore leave (especially on his foreign escapades). It is not all that complicated he spent huge amounts on the military and cut the taxes of those who could best afford to pay (and also those who profited most from the war(s))

Obama took over right when the shyte was hitting the metaphorical fan. Admitedly the debt has increased under Obama, but unemployment has decreased. Inheriting an economy that had a ballooning debt and skyrocketing unemplyment, the Obama administration (despite the resistance of the GOP House) has managed to stop the free fall. Consumer confidence is far higher than it was 4 years ago and when unemployment drops another couple percent AND American war spending is slashed with the evacuation of Iraq, the deficit can be effectively addressed.

I cannot say with any degree of confidence that Romney will keep America's nose out of economically crippling and morally questionable foreign conflicts nor can I believe that deficit reduction belt tightening will be shared by the economic elite. I fear Romney will continue to commit American troops to unwinnable crusades and the bill will be passed on to the middle class...that is the GOP's Robin Hood In Reverse mantra "Rob from the poor and give to the rich."

I hope my southern neighbors do the right thing and grant Obama four more years.

Will you reply to my comments about your assertions regarding all Muslims? Maybe you didn't see them.

Not all Muslims are terrorists and I probably could have used a stronger analogy. But how do you think the 9/11 families feel about this "community center" being built so close to the WTC? And why? Why do they need it so close, right there?

Why not somewhere else? If you read the history of Muslims and wars, they ALWAYS build monuments where they conquer. Sure, they're not going to come out and say that in a press conference, but you can easily put two and two together.

I have nothing against the building of it, just not there. Such a disgrace. Go explain that to the 9/11 families, cops, and firefighters.

This quote is entirely out of context. Perhaps you only saw the video clip on FoxNews (a horrible excuse for a "news" organization), or perhaps you're just plain ignorant, but the President didn't merely say "You didn't build that". The whole point of that speech was to outline America as a community. People helping people achieve their goals. For example, I wouldn't have been able to graduate college without great professors. I wouldn't be a great Microbiologist without great mentors in my laboratory. I wouldn't have been able to graduate high school, middle school, or grade school without great teachers, school counselors and friends. I wouldn't be able to have compassion for my fellow man without great parents as role models. We are social creatures who learn from others.

Here's another example: Someone doesn't just start a business completely alone. You start with an idea. Where did you get the idea? Did you discuss it with anyone else? Did anyone give you encouragement or advice? Did you go to the government for a start up loan? Did you go to a private company for a start up loan? Did you do all the initial work yourself or did a couple of friends chip in to get you started? We don't do anything completely on our own without help from SOMEONE along the way. And that as a country we need to look out for and HELP each other succeed for the overall success of the country. That's what the President was talking about, and it's blatantly obvious that's what he meant when you take the entire topic IN CONTEXT.

He has always been very "community" based. Whereas the Republicans tend to be very "individual" based or as I call them the "it's all about me" party.

It's not out of context at all. It was our president talking without a teleprompter, which always leads to disaster for him in which he always reveals himself...i.e. "You didn't build that, someone else made that happen." and "I wanna spread the wealth around" and "The Cambridge police acted stupidly"

This president despises the private sector, thinks everyone is a victim, and believes nothing good can happen unless government is involved. It's a disgrace and it's insulting to people who own restaurants, family businesses, etc. My hope is that in January he goes back to "community organizing" so we as a nation can get back to priavte sector growth. His "fundamental transformation of America" sucks for everyone except the politicians, while the rest of us get $hit on (8% unemployment for 43 months and median household incomes have delinced 5% over the past 4 years). He has no more ideas. His ideas have failed. We can't afford 4 more years.

When he was talking about business owners "not doing that alone" he was saying that those who started businesses relied on police to keep their factories safe, public schools to educate their workers, public roads to transport their goods or allow customers to come to their business. He said they didn't do it on their own and he was 100% correct.

The president despises the private sector but saved the auto industry and saved 1.5 million jobs. He believes nothing good can happen unless government is involved, but he has reduced the federal workforce (unlike any other president, including republicans, in recent history). Unchecked, private sector growth advocates were responsible for the near collapse of the world's largest economy (not to mention the world economy). The markets have grown by 100% during his first term, yet the billionaire doners who are funding his idiotic opponent for the presidency whine constantly about how Obama's policies are ruining America and costing us jobs. Speaking of jobs, nearly 5 million jobs have been created under his administration, yet I hear about three times a week how "there are fewer jobs now than there were four years ago." He is trying to tell everyone that Obama is weak on China, yet Bain Capital has invested in China for years at the expense of jobs in this country.

Romney came out and said that 47% of the country thought they were victims -- that they felt entitled to things like healthcare and food. The problem with Romney is that he (as I have said many times on this thread) is pure scum. He made his living shitting on American workers and he would continue to do so if he were handed the presidency. I find it astonishing that he can find ANYONE to vote for him.

Big reps to the poster who can tell us all the last time Congress passed a budget.

1997

Cheapest, most effective way to stimulate job growth in this country is cutting the corporate income tax in half and eliminating ALL loopholes/deductions/BS.

Romney is a pandering fool to focus on nibbling around income tax rates when the corporate tax is the real culprit. Almost 10% of Fortune 500 companies have changed domicile in the last 12 years. Read up on Eaton (ETN) using the acquisition of Cooper Industries to facilitate domicile change to Ireland and their 12.5% corporate tax.

Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much MSNBC and Moveon.Org for this guy.

He didn't save the auto industry. Only reason the gov now OWNS general motors is because barry was sucking up to the United Auto Works Union, who fills his coffins with plenty of dollars for re-election. If you think this pres. would've done the same for Toyota or Honda, you're nuts. And GM is still failing, still seeing its stock fall, still making cars NO ONE wants to buy, and the taxpayers are still footing the bill. It's a disaster.

But I forgot...our pres. told us back in June that the private sector is doing "just fine." We need more government workers that taxpayers have to pay for. That'll bring 8.2% unemplyoment down.

As for Romney $hitting on American workers and blah blah...tell that to the companies he saved from bankruptcy and are still operating in business.
