"Conflation"-- the new IE drinking game! Every time it's said, take a drink!

That statement is in regard to this election, not that foreign policy doesn't matter in terms of presidency. At the outset the goal of Romney's campaign was to focus entirely on the economy because that is where Obama seemed the most vulnerable. Anything else would favor Obama.

Oh, OK. I was having trouble believing that anyone would say such a stupid thing. That makes a little more sense.

I understand what his goal was, but, frankly, Romney was losing that argument anyway. He does need to find something else to talk about, but he doesn't have much to go on.

Mass. record? Can't go there because his signature accomplishment in that job was almost identical to what many would say is Obama's signature accomplishment as POTUS -- healthcare.

Business experience? Not so much, given that a huge piece of his business experience involved raping companies and putting Americans out of work in favor of shipping those jobs overseas to line his own pockets.

Social agenda? The Mitt Romney of a decade ago might have had a better shot here, but he has lept so far right to get his party's nomination that a presidency of Romney/Ryan is simply terrifying to the average fair-minded American.

Tax policy? Given that probably everyone on this board paid a higher tax rate than he did the only year he's released his taxes and his refusal to release his tax forms to demonstrate that he is even being truthful about the rate he did pay, it's hard to get any mileage out of this area.

Imigration? Self deportation? Give me a f***ing break.

Foreign policy seems like it might be one of the only roads left to travel. But after watching his Olympic tour where he alienated England, I'm not sure he's ready for prime time there either.

He's just a terrible candidate. The only reason he's even in this race anymore is because the right wing simply hates Obama.

In this country anymore, at least as far as polls are concerned, you can get 10%-20% of respondents to say they believe in underwear gnomes! Not sure people actually believe some of these things or the percentage of people willing to goof on pollsters has escalated.

Of course you're right.

But, the number of "not sure" responses is really puzzling to me. How can there be any possibility that Romney had more to do with it than Obama? If you put Bush on that poll, I could see him getting votes...I wouldn't agree, but I could see it. But, Romney?

Of course Romney had nothing to do with it. But you get odd things from people. There was a guy that did a documentary on Palin's treatment in the last prez cycle and he attached a bit at the end where he interviewed dem voters (I am not picking on dem voters, that is what was used in this instance, may have gotten similar answers from Rs if he asked them, who knows) and he asked them basic political questions on camera and the incorrect responses he got were amazing...I will see if I can find just the clip and post it.

Exactly...I used to listen to Hannity sometimes and he did "man on the street" interviews and got same thing for Q's like who is prez, VP, speaker of house, majority in house/senate, etc.

Anyone who wants to use this link...beware of the starred out text...you need to replace it with L@den...replace @ with a...this is painfull...good read, but it basically says people who are extremely partisan eff up facts to suit their views...no revelation there...but the article was really good.

Seriously though, acting like your semantic BS "lie" over the Janesville plant is a stone cold fact, is laughable. Obama made a campaign promise to keep it open. It closed within a year of him saying such a stupid thing. Ryan rightfully calls him out for saying such a dumb thing and misleading the people of Janesville and you twist the words to mean Ryan is a liar because the plant closed before Obama took office (conflation much?).

Ignoring Ryan's comments - Obama saying what he said means one of two things to me
1) He really thought he could save that specific plant, and had every right and power to do so if elected POTUS.
2) He knew it was pure BS and those flyover hicks would eat it up in a state up for grabs.
Either of these is an incredibly toxic mentality to take into the highest office in the land.

Oh, let me add 3) I just read the prompter and let my staffers figure out what needs to be done.

I cannot think of any logical, well intentioned reason Obama would make that promise. It was a horribly irresponsible statement preying on ignorance and desperation. You know, the people Democrats say theyAnd before y'all tee off on the "saved the auto industry" talking points, isolate it to promises made to that specific town relying on that specific plant.

This is a perfect example of justifying a lie. Obama never promised to keep it open, he said his policies will help keep plants like Janesville open. That is a lie on Ryan's part, that you choose to believe. Second, and most important, Ryan said that the plant closed under Obama, that is an outright lie. You can justify it, like many conservatives have tried, by saying Ryan used it to illustrate a greater problem. Here is the thing, if it is such a huge problem, why did Ryan have to lie about Janesville? Why not use the other million businesses that Ryan claims have closed under Obama? Ryan wouldn't have a credibility issue if that was the case.

To your third point, WHY THE **** IS THE TELEPROMPTER SUCH AN ISSUE? Why wouldn't you want a President who is prepared? Reagan used a teleprompter all the time. This is like the tweet nonsense yesterday. It is such meaningless nonsense that takes away from real issues.

Everyone knows that one of Obama's strengths is his mouth. Check it out, here is Obama talking to the House Republican Conference without a teleprompter. Spoiler alert: He is really good.

What if the principal parties’ candidates for president really agree more than they disagree?

What if they both support the authority of the federal government to spy on Americans without search warrants? What if they both support confining foreigners, uncharged and untried, in Guantanamo Bay? What if they both believe the president can arrest without charge and confine without trial any American he hates or fears?

What if they both believe in secret courts -- kept away from the public and the press -- that can take away the rights of Americans? What if they both think the president can disregard the Constitution when it comes to the rights of those the government has confined to speedy trials, to confront witnesses and evidence against them, and to counsel of their choosing? What if they both believe the government can use evidence obtained under torture at trials in American courts? What if they both think the president can incarcerate those he once prosecuted, even after acquittal?

What if both major presidential candidates believe they can fight any war, assassinate any foe or assault any country using the military or the CIA, and they need not ask Congress for a declaration of war as the Constitution requires, nor account to Congress or the public as the law requires? What if they both want American troops to remain in Afghanistan, even though no foreign country in history has successfully done so, and even though the culture in Afghanistan is as lawless, as vicious to women and children, and as harmless to America today as it was when President Bush invaded it in 2001?

What if they both think this costly and fruitless war -- the longest in American history -- is somehow good for American freedom and security, even though most Americans do not? What if they both refuse to understand that the longer we are killing people in foreign lands who can cause us no real harm the more likely will people from those lands come here and bring us real harm?

What if they both believe in adding to the government’s $16 trillion debt and letting future generations deal with paying it back? What if they both want to have the feds spend more money next year than the feds are spending this year? What if they both accept FDR- and LBJ-style entitlements, even though they are nowhere authorized by the Constitution and there are not enough present-day workers to tax in order to pay for them?

What if President Obama wants to raise taxes by increasing some tax rates on the rich? What if Gov. Romney wants to raise taxes by eliminating some tax deductions available to the rich? What if raising taxes on anyone in a recession will cause higher unemployment?

What if they both believe in borrowing newly printed money from the Federal Reserve in order to fund the government? What if Obama is of the view that the federal government can tell you how to live and keep you from becoming too rich? What if Romney wants to make the same federal government more effective and efficient at what it does?

What if Obama is really a Marxist who rejects personal freedom, natural rights and private property? What if Romney is really an empty suit who doesn’t know or won’t say what he believes? What if Obama really wants all health care providers to work for the federal government? What if Romney spent the entire presidential primary season condemning ObamaCare, only to say this past weekend that there are parts of it he really likes and will endeavor to retain?

What if Obama wants federal bureaucrats to ration health care and decide who lives and who dies? What if Romney spent the entire presidential primary season running against conservative and libertarian opponents and arguing that only the free market or the states should address health care, but earlier this week accepted a major federal role in its management?

What if Obama will have the feds tell you what doctor to see and tell the doctor what procedures to administer? What if Romney consistently blasted the concept that Congress can constitutionally force you to buy health care coverage you don’t want to buy, but now accepts the concept that Congress can constitutionally force insurance companies to sell you health care coverage they don’t want to sell?

What if the system is fixed? What do we do about it?
