These riot and looting scenes are amazing. Almost as amazing as the media and Dems pissing on our heads and telling us it is raining. The number of people that lick it up and hate Trump for letting it happen - these are LOCAL problems and your LOCAL law enforcement/government is 150% responsible.

Yup. Portland needs to deal with Portland.

Is Trump responsible for looting? ANTIFA? Spineless progressive mayors letting people take over blocks of their city without repercussions? No.

Is Trump responsible for doing literally nothing over his Presidency to combat policing issues in this country? Yes. Is Trump responsible for his late and wholly inadequate response to George Floyd's murder? Also yes.

This is one of the disappointments I have with DJT. He could have asked for 15 or 30 minutes of prime time to address the citizenship and quell the uproar.

The blame game. China. All who protest. Players taking knees. Dem govs are snakes, incompetent, etc. In 2016, candidate Trump blamed a Rep Gov for a high crime rate. Unleashing dogs. He does nothing to work with Gov and mayors for appropriate federal intervention. Except he deprives them of federal gratnts - JAG grants and even promised revenue when they are now moving into Chicago, etc. - on the condition they report his immigration demands. No money to fund more officers, equipment, training from the feds per Donald Trump unless they comply. All hail the King. He's losing in court on all of these unconstitutional actions. Millions of dollare deprived from the same PDs and cities and small towns in those states that refuse his unconstitutional orders. These court cases have found for the states and cities through numerous Appeals Courts. The Trump Admin is considering appeal to SCOTUS. Meanwhile, all that money for extra police is held up. Not his fault - always. Agains and again. Our law and order President - blah, blah, blah. A political stunt. Trump and the DOJ need to end their appeals and release the needed money. His loves uneducated people.

Thanks for nothing but hot air from a blowhard.

Feel better? lol

Agreed and I don't think he's publicly handled certain things well since the Pandemic started and some things thereafter. But, that's why I posted it in the Police State USA thread and not the Trump Presidency thread. Very specific issue to me.

Portland was burning before Federal Agents and Portland will burn after. It's Portland's fault and that's it. Being a 15 year resident of Portland it sickens me to see this which is the only reason I really ever comment on these topics.

You would know better actually living there, but it's always struck me as "give a mouse a cookie." No one has the spine to say no to radicals, because they think it'll be politically dangerous for them. So they acquiesce to their demands to try to placate them, and then inevitably they move the line a little bit further. And a little bit further. And then a little bit further still. Over decades, that erodes your entire civil power structure because they don't respect consequences for their actions.

Throughout history, it typically gets to a point where people say "enough." And then you have revolution. I wouldn't be surprised if the next mayor is someone running on a Left platform but preaching law & order and a crackdown on so-called protests.

What is an accurate description of Portland as far as crime is that it has a very low rate of violent crime - 24.5 per 10,000 residents per FBI stats. That's just higher than Sioux Falls, SD (22.5) and Providence RI (24.3). Lower than Billings, Montana (24.9).

Other cities in the West that it has less violent crime for comparison -
- Tempe (25.9), Topeka Ks (29.2), Omaha (31.4), Reno (32.6), Salt Lake City (42.1).
- South Bend has almost double the violent crime (46.1).
- Tulsa's rate - 50.9 per 10,000.
- Birmingham AL - 86.1 and Little Rock, AR - 87.4 - both almost four times more violent than Portland.

As someone who has lived in Portland, have numerous friends and family who have lived and worked there and had members go to Lewis and Clark, Reed College, Portland State as well as to U of O, and who have had residences downtown and throughout the city and the metro area, Portland is certainly safer and there are not many places, if. any, that you cannot walk or live. Murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and arson are all down since 2008. The only outlier is stolen cars, which rose by 47 percent in the same period.

We've just reached a point where political expediency, divisiveness and vindictiveness in the pursuit of retaining power is a new norm.

The overall crime rate in Portland' has continuously dropped since 2004 and is about 60% lower than it was then. See grahic - https://www.macrotrends.net/cities/us/or/portland/crime-rate-statistics. (Searchable for other cities, too)

All this improvement in fighting crime and making the city safer was under Democratic mayors, progressive if you will - at least as safe in violent crime to Sioux Falls or Billings.

I wouldn't hold your breath awaiting a Law and Order mayor candidate who, if I can paraphrase you, isn't spineless, unwilling to placate the radicals, and an eroding civil power structure. Whatever Portland is doing to lower their crime rate by 60% and achieve that degree of safety for its citizens is worth emulating. A lot of work by the city, police and community have gone into that decrease. Anyway, just our experiences.

Portland has also been dubbed "Dopelandia" by National Geographic according to it's Wiki page, and referred to as "the deadliest drug market in the Pacific Northwest." Dan Rather also did a piece for HuffPo about the high rate of child prostitution there. So, you know, Portland's got that going for it too.

It's also one of the "whitest" big cities in the USA. Last figures I saw was 78% white. There is a nasty racist past and Oregon was typically one of the last states to expand rights for minorities.

Curious where the thousands of people who committed thousands of unlawful acts (destruction of property, theft, trespassing, etc.) show up in these crime stats.

My point quite obviously had nothing to do murders and everything to do with leaders turning a blind eye to nightly displays of anarchy.

Absolutely, dude. That is about the figure I remember, if not higher. Vancouver (WA), Methford, and eastern Oregon remain so. I imagine a good portion of the murders are Portlanders killing Californians. Outside of them, Portland is tolerant and issues permits for gatherings at the Waterfront of Evangelists, protesters against racial violence, alt-riight/Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer, etc types. Funny to see the ACLU defending the alt-rights right to assemble. Reps controlled the state House until 2007. Oregon in 2000 finally voted to eliminate this language from its Constitution:
“No free Negro, or mulatto, not residing in this state at the time of the adoption of this constitution, shall come, reside, or be within this State, or hold any real estate.”

Almost 29% of the voters in a referendum in 2002 were against removing this language.

Correct. There is an insane amount of negligence with the homeless population or street people in downtown Portland. I have several stories involving myself, wife, mother, etc that would truly make you go, WTF.

For example, this is the short version, a homeless man was stalking/harassing my wife every morning, before work, for about two weeks, outside of her bank. This is right off Pioneer Square. This eventually culminated in him attempting to assualt her with a sharp object. The cops response, "what would you like us to do." The bank had to hire private security because the police refused to do anything about it.

It's always the same people that complain about the irrational hate of Trump that then choose to hold him 0% accountable for his actions and the actions of his administration. Maybe, just maybe, some nuance is required to properly evaluate whose "fault" things are.

"If I had a son he would look like Trayvon" - Obummer threw gas on the fire. Kamala knee jerk gushed over Jussie Smollett. Trump has stood up for law and order from day one and doesn't pander to soft millennial whackadoodles.

Prison reform and lowest recorded minority unemployment rates were a feather in Don's cap. Not all minorities are thugs on drugs, some want to be able to walk safely down their street.

It happens everywhere - suppressing crime stats by refusing to record crimes. I blame a lot of it on just not wanting to do paperwork but you know damn well every city in America is looking at those stats Legacy posted and trying to keep it competitive.

Data driven policing. Programs like Compstat here in NYC. Precinct commanders are called on the carpet for crime patterns in their area. Leads to undercharging of crimes and threats to the street cops of losing RDO’s and undesirable details to placate the higher ups. That on top of progressive DA’s refusing to prosecute and making deals. I’ve seen a stabbing reported as the victim received “puncture wounds”. I don’t believe any data or statistics related to crime coming from cities.

Lax,
The annual FBI stats and the historical graphs of crime stats linked reflect crime previous to this year. The rise in property crimes (in years prior to this) while other categories have fallen are attributed to illegal drug use.

Perhaps as an indication and statement about the direction of the Rep Party in Oregon, their voters chose Jo Rae Perkins for their nominee for the Senate. Perkins appeal over other Rep candidates was that she is a supporter of Qanon, the conspiracy group. In her victory speech, she told her supporters, pointedly repeats the group’s most used catchphrase.
“Where we go one, we go all,. I stand with President Trump, I stand with Q and the team. Thank you, Anons, and thank you, patriots. Together, we can save our republic.”
Rep primary voting percent for Senate in 2020. Light red Rae Perkins with 40-50%. Dark red - 50-60%
440px-Oregon_Senate_Republican_primary%2C_2020.svg.png

Up to this point Perkins, who seems a perennial Rep candidate was defeated in the primaries for U.S. Senate in 2014 (less than 3% of Rep vote), U.S. Rep for Oregon's 4th in 2016 and 2018 (less than 30% of the vote) but in 2020 won the Seante nomination by almost 50%. She is the former co-woman of the Linn County Rep Party, known for her bankruptcies and personal difficulties, she notes Trump's statements reflecting support of Q. Trump has not yet endorsed her.

Trump gutted common sense police reform -- https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/do...a-didn-t-reform-policing-he-did-then-n1231200

The cliffnotes:

In addition, in September 2017, the Justice Department said it would stop the Obama-era practice of investigating police departments and issuing public reports about their failings. For example, the Justice Department had investigated the Ferguson Police Department and found unconstitutional, unlawful and racist behavior and policing within the department.

When he served as Trump's attorney general, Jeff Sessions made it clear early on that he opposed consent decrees like the one struck in Ferguson, and he ordered a review of the Justice Department's more than a dozen consent decrees. Sessions said they "reduced morale"of police.

Sessions spoke out against a consent decree being finalized in early 2017 in Baltimore, saying he feared it would make the city less safe, and his Justice Department sought to delay it. (A federal judge declined to go along.) And in 2018, Sessions gave a speech in Chicago calling a consent decree between Illinois' attorney general and Chicago Police Department a "colossal mistake," even though Obama's Justice Department had found widespread use of excessive force aimed at people of color.

If you want to make an argument on why less transparency is somehow good for police-to-community relations, I'm all ears.

ICE was there to arrest a couple of undocumented individuals with "a history of criminal violent behavior." I guess those Oregonians protesting don't mind violent criminals walking around free doing their business.

Federal agents arrived in Bend, Oregon, after activists blocked ICE bus

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/13/us/federal-agents-oregon-activists-ice/index.html

I saw that on Oregon news last night. Some local reporting on the scene including Bend's mayor, City Counselors, the County Attorney and a pastor intervened :
Central Oregonians stall ICE bus with impromptu protest
(Oregon Public Broadcasting)

GXQ76METRVGNBHYNUU75TIPHX4.jpg

Fpx News website last night had more info which offered descriptions rather than slanting it until they got to the end and inserted a remark about abolish ICE and a favorite target, AOC. Nothing in the Bend incident had anything to do with that. Acting ICE head says they were felons who were a danger to the community. If I remember, those who crossed the border illegally were charged with felonies until those were dismissed when they appeared in court.

From the Fox article:
bend-protest.jpg

Protest organizers asked participants not to vandalize the buses, and after one person wrote on a bus another person cleaned it off, according to an OPB reporter. A speaker also told protesters to "take a knee" when federal agents arrive instead of leaving.

A reporter at the scene said federal agents used pepper spray at least once. There were no reports of violence.

What happened in Laurelhurst Park, Portland last night is concerning.

Links on Bend, which is the Deschutes county seat, is in central Oregon. Bend's rapid growth is due to the attraction of its natural surroundings, including the Cascades, the Deschutes River and National Forest and Prineville BLM. Growth has spilled over to nearby Redmond. Unemployment was in the 3% area, but has ballooned to 18%. Politically, state Senators for the area have been Republican since at least 1984. (can't find records for the district prior but it's probably always been Republican).

Chief Krantz is a 27 year veteran of the Portland PD.

Bend Police Chief Krantz issues statement on PD actions during ICE protest

First and foremost, I know that the events that occurred yesterday in our community were traumatic, and I want everyone to know that I feel and I have heard the pain this has caused for many members in our community and especially to the families who had their loved ones taken away.

I want to express my gratitude to the Bend community for providing an example to the rest of our communities and our nation of what a peaceful First Amendment event looks like. The right to express yourself through peaceful expressions of free speech is a tantamount right of our United States and Oregon Constitutions.

Last night’s event at the 500 block of SW Industrial Way was an example of our community organizing and managing an event that remained overall peaceful. We observed numerous examples of community members that could have changed the overall tone of the event. However, our own community members worked to keep the event peaceful. Thank you.

We also understand that some community members do not feel safe from federal authorities. There is a tension between our role in maintaining safety and the fact that federal authorities are allowed to operate in Bend. While we cannot prevent federal authorities from operating, we are focused on doing whatever we can to keep our community safe.

We know many people have unanswered questions about what happened yesterday. Responses specific to the Bend Police Department, are detailed below.(cont)

The young anarchists in Portland despite community leaders speaking out against their violence branched out into some neighborhoods the other day. Starting fires in the street and retiring to the Laurelhurst Park in Laurelhurst north of the Hawthorne neighborhood. Hawthorne has small businesses, some homes, condos. The Park is quite large - 2.6 acres. That built on residents disgust for them. It's too far to walk from downtown/waterfront.

Anyway, someone threw a couple of homemade pipe bombs at them. Another did not go off. A media crew followed a guy who had been in helmet, night vision goggles and gas mask walking away from the site where the pipe bombs were thrown. They videotaped the encounter with him. He had taken off his mask, was recognizable, his name was known, has been identified and is now a "person of interest" to the PD.

What the PD in Portland have been concerned about was an escalation in violence should the radical right, who have a definite presence in the area, start instigating these sort of attacks. Pipe bombs are definitely an escalation.

As it turns out, he is a radical right, has boasted in social media that he had “infiltrated ANTIFA” and that he would help others do the same. No one was injured by the bomb. He is also an ex-Navy Seal. Hopefully, this can be nipped in the bud.

Man seen in area of homemade explosive at Portland protest ID’ed as ex-Navy SEAL

Police name former Navy SEAL a 'person of interest' after bomb thrown at Portland protesters

As reported elsewhere, that after reviewing 550 cases, the DA’s office now plans to prosecute 47, all of which are felony cases. Another 86 felony cases are pending. The others will be dropped due to lack of evidence that they were doing nothing other than exercising their freedom of speech.

The DA is doing such a great job that the Oregon State Police announced that they are pulling out of Portland. And no, not because the riots have stopped or that they support radical right wing extremists, but rather they evidently are tired of arresting rioters only to have the DA drop the charges and set them free.

Oregon State Police on Thursday pulled out the approximately 100 troopers helping both federal officers and Portland police in responding to nightly protests in the city that have often ended in confrontations with demonstrators and arrests.

State police committed to two weeks “and that two weeks ended today,” said spokesman Capt. Timothy R. Fox.

“We’re in a county that’s not going to prosecute this criminal behavior,” Fox added.

“The Oregon State Police is continually reassessing our resources and the needs of our partner agencies and at this time we are inclined to move those resources back to counties where prosecution of criminal conduct is still a priority,” he said.

Police are a local issue, IMO. You want transparency then demand it from your local officials. Sending the Feds in to regulate is one way to deal with a problem, voting out your sheriff or mayor and town council are another. I am a HUGE fan of deregulation and reducing power and influence of the federal government. Yes you will end up with local problems but at least you are preventing a systemic one.

BTW - "How to be a Federal Criminal" is a great book - @CrimeADay is a good Twitter follow.

"In August 2017, Trump reversed an Obama policy that banned the military from selling surplus equipment to police, a measure that had been put in place amid criticism over the armored vehicles, tear gas and assault rifles used to control protests"

A-OK in my book.

As for consent decrees - I think you have a valid point in there but sure is a slippery slope. I fall on the "less is more" when it comes to Feds imposing their will on locals.
"The Justice Department, he wrote, "should exercise special caution before entering into a consent decree," for fear of depriving states of their rights and control over their budgets."

Phone and pen are not the same as legislation - what exactly did Barry and Joe get done on that front with full legislature on their side again? Michael Brown sure was a model citizen, btw. Hands up don't shoot was proven false yet still parroted today by BLM race hustlers. Good thing Obama was in office so we didn't end up with riots right! Wait, there were still riots.... but Obama....

You can disagree but my opinion is not unsubstantiated that Dems look to keep certain constituencies on their plantation.

I am a HUGE fan of deregulation and reducing power and influence of the federal government. Yes you will end up with local problems but at least you are preventing a systemic one.

The bolded is a completely valid viewpoint.

With that being said, I would make the counter argument that the Justice Department and FBI exist to enforce federal laws. This includes ensuring that local police departments follow the Constitution and other federal regulations. There has to be an enforcement arm of the executive branch, there isn't another mechanism to ensure that all states and local governments follow the Constitution.

Given that fact, when local policing issues cross the line from being a general malfeasance or negligence to violating the Bill of Rights/civil rights/other amendments and laws I don't see how the federal government can do anything other than intervene.

News to me that Trump and the DoD have stopped sending military weapons and vehicles to PDs. I thought he reversed himself in '17 and loosened restrictions on PDs obtaining them. Labeling a group terrorists will facilitate their use, too. Many cities have refused to accept the surplus military equipment used in wars to be deployed. See this list.

List of equipment of the Defense Forces of Georgia

Members from both parties are so concerned about this that they want to ban it.

Bills Would Ban Sale of Military Weapons to Police, Bar Deployment of Troops to Protests

Presidents changing limitations of these regulations by executive order to use against Americans and contrary to the wishes of Congress should be illegal.

Now some protestors are throwing objects while pretending to be the press. The picture in the article shows protestors have made shields as if they intend to fight.

Portland officers injured after protester throws a nearly 10-pound rock, police say

C'mom. man. A rock? These young anarchists that confront the police at night are using much more than that and have for years. Now that Patriot Prayer and their loose group are showing up, that's even worse for the city. (later in your article)

They hate each other and will arm themselves to fight. But the anti-facists and radical left have so far never be responsible for deaths. The facists - for lack of a better encompassing word/armed extremist right - have been responsible for murders throughout this country over years.

Ever heard of the May Day riots in Portland in 2017? Cider Riot? The killing of an anti-fa by a right-winger? The arrest of Joey Gibson with subsequent felony riot charges for planing the confrontation and rioting? The murders by a right wing extremist on the MAX.

Gibson's lawyer, James Buchal, chairs the Multnomah County Republican Party. He's arguing that Gibson has been falsely labelied as a white supremacist and far-right extremist. Buchal also claimed that local elected officials have publicly maligned his client.

The radical Left has killed Ben Shapiro's public image, never discount that.
